SOUTH African peace icon Desmond Tutu says he would rather go to hell than worship a homophobic God, likening the fight against gay prejudice to the anti-apartheid struggle. "I would refuse to go to a homophobic heaven. No, I would say sorry, I mean I would much rather go to the other place," the retired archbishop said at the launch of a United Nations gay equality campaign in Cape Town yesterday. "I would not worship a God who is homophobic and that is how deeply I feel about this," he said, condemning the use of religious justification for anti-gay prejudice. Launched by the UN Human Rights Office, the public education campaign "Free and Equal" aims to ...

Fugitive online spying whistleblower Edward Snowden has documents to leave Moscow airport, where he has been stranded for a month, Russia media reports. The Interfax news agency said Snowden could leave the airport in the “next hours.” His documents from Russia’s migration service verify that his application for asylum is under consideration and give him the right to enter the country as along as border guards don’t object, the RIA Novosti news agency reported on Wednesday. Snowden has been holed up in the no-man’s-land of the airport transit lounge for a month since he fled there from Hong Kong. He’s on the run from U.S. authorities who want to prosecute him ...

Monsanto announced today that they are quitting their effort to get more genetically modified crops approved in Europe. "We will no longer be pursuing approvals for cultivation of new biotech crops in Europe," the biotech company said in a statement. "Instead, we will focus on enabling imports of biotech crops into the EU and the growth of our current business there," Monsanto added. Only two genetically modified crops are allowed to be grown in the European Union (Monsanto's MON 810 maize and BASF's Amflora potato). The EU currently has a 'zero tolerance' policy for importing GMOs. Presumably, Monsanto will focus their attention on modifying this ...

Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, said Friday that he will “protect this young man from the persecution unleashed by the world’s most powerful empire,” according to the New York Times. He says the NSA whistleblower could help “save the prize from the disrepute incurred by the hasty and ill-conceived decision” to give the 2009 award to Barack Obama. In his letter addressed to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Stefan Svallfors praised Snowden for his “heroic effort at great personal cost.” He stated that by revealing the existence and the scale of the US surveillance programs, Snowden showed “individuals can stand up for fundamental rights and freedoms.” Mejlar till Norska Nobelkommittén. pic.twitter.com/RCYqxHvOyO — Stefan Svallfors ...

Robert Gates Says Syria Is A Tornado, And The US Should Keeps Its Hands Out

Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham think attacking Syria to establish a no-fly zone will somehow stem Iranian nuclear ambitions, while Dr. Robert Gates says the whole mess is like "sticking your hand in a tornado." Gates, both a former Secretary of Defense and a former CIA director, says involvement in Syria is a slippery slope that will only lead to deeper, riskier commitments. "The question about the involvement in Syria is, can you put just a few fingers into the tornado? And at what point, when that fails, do the pressures to do more gradually draw you in further and further?" Gates said during a talk at the Hearst Tower Sunday. For Gates, even arming Syrians ...

FLAHSBACK: Egypt’s court rules Islamist-dominated Senate and constitution panel illegal

Egypt’s top court has invalidated the upper house and the panel that drafted the country’s new constitution. The Senate though will only be dissolved after elections, the court said in a ruling that is likely to deepen Egypt’s political instability. The Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) ruled on Sunday that the laws governing the election of the Islamist-dominated Senate, or Shura Council, and the constitution panel were illegal. The court said that the Shura should remain in place until a new parliament is elected, but it would reportedly have no legislative authority. So far, no date has been set for the vote. However, earlier Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said that elections ...

According to a Libyan intelligence document, the Muslim Brotherhood, including Egyptian President Morsi, were involved in the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, where several Americans, including U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, were killed. On Wednesday, June 26, several Arabic websites, including Veto Gate, quoted the intelligence report, which apparently was first leaked to the Kuwaiti paper, Al Ra’i. Prepared by Mahmoud Ibrahim Sharif, Director of National Security for Libya, the report is addressed to the nation’s Minister of Interior. It discusses the preliminary findings of the investigation, specifically concerning an ...

CAIRO (Reuters) - Army concern about the way President Mohamed Mursi was governing Egypt reached tipping point when the head of state attended a rally packed with hardline fellow Islamists calling for holy war in Syria, military sources said. At the June 15 rally, Sunni Muslim clerics used the word "infidels" to denounce both the Shi'ites fighting to protect Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the non-Islamists that oppose Mursi at home. Mursi himself called for foreign intervention in Syria against Assad, leading to a veiled rebuke from the army, which issued an apparently bland but sharp-edged statement the next day stressing that its only role was guarding Egypt's borders. "The ...

WASHINGTON: The United States on Wednesday ordered the mandatory evacuation of its embassy in Cairo, just hours after the Egyptian military ousted president Mohamed Morsi. The embassy in Egypt has occasionally been targeted by demonstrators and had already been closed on Wednesday as a precaution. Due to the July 4 Independence Day and the Arab world weekend, it was not due to reopen ...

Edward Snowden has issued a statement via WikiLeaks Statement from Edward Snowden in Moscow Monday July 1, 21:40 UTC... One week ago, I left Hong Kong after it became clear that my freedom and safety were under threat for revealing the truth. My continued liberty has been owed to the efforts of friends new and old, family, and others who I have never met and probably never will. I trusted them with my life and they returned that trust with a faith in me for which I will always be thankful. On Thursday, President Obama declared before the world that he would not permit any diplomatic "wheeling and dealing" over my case. Yet now it is being reported that after promising not to do ...

The plan to spirit the surveillance whistleblower Edward Snowden to sanctuary in Latin America appeared to be unravelling on Friday, amid tension between Ecuador's government and Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks. President Rafael Correa halted an effort to help Snowden leave Russia amid concern Assange was usurping the role of the Ecuadoran government, according to leaked diplomatic correspondence published on Friday. Amid signs Quito was cooling with Snowden and irritated with Assange, Correa declared invalid a temporary travel document which could have helped extract Snowden from his reported location in Moscow. Correa declared that the safe conduct pass issued by ...
