AC/DC nearly fired Bon Scott after overdose Post Date: 2013-11-01 09:09:07 by A K A Stone

UNTHINKABLE! And until now untold. AC/DC nearly sacked Bon Scott. Mark Evans, the former bass guitarist, makes the revelation in The Youngs: The Brothers Who Built AC/DC, to be published by Random House tomorrow. Evans said AC/DC's founding members Angus and Malcolm Young, who were anti-drugs, took a dim view of their iconic frontman overdosing on heroin in Melbourne in 1975. "There were some doubts about Bon at that stage," Evans said. "He'd had a problem or he'd had an OD very early on. It was just a dabble . . . Bon just made a bad decision. It was only one bad decision. "From what I was led to believe and came to believe, it was a very, very ...

AFP - A Chinese ratings agency downgraded its US sovereign credit rating Thursday despite Washington's resolution of the debt ceiling deadlock, warning that fundamentals for a potential default remained "unchanged". Dagong lowered its ratings for US local and foreign currency credit from A to A-, maintaining a negative outlook, the agency said in a statement. The announcement came after the US Congress passed and President Barack Obama signed a bill that extends the nation's borrowing authority and ends a two-week government shutdown. Cannabis 'scratch and sniff' cards help Dutch bust growers Post Date: 2013-10-08 20:26:20 by A K A Stone

AFP - A Dutch initiative to combat illegal cannabis cultivation through the use of marijuana-scented "scratch-and-sniff" cards has gone nationwide to alert citizens to what their neighbours may be up to. The expansion comes after a pilot project launched three years ago to combat illegal weed plantations by helping people to recognise the smell proved a success. Backed by police, city councils and energy service providers who have their electricity stolen, thousands of cannabis-odoured cards will be distributed in four Dutch cities including Amstelveen near Amsterdam, a spokesman for the initiative said. "The cards are being made available across the country, starting ...
Former Joint Chiefs chairman: Obama plotted to destabilize regimes in Bahrain, Egypt Post Date: 2013-10-04 06:54:41 by A K A Stone

WASHINGTON The United States was said to have planned to destabilize at least two Arab countries over the last two years. A former leading U.S. military commander asserted that the administration of President Barack Obama worked to destabilize the regimes of Bahrain and Egypt. [Ret.] Gen. Hugh Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the administrations drive against Bahrain, wracked by a Shiite revolt, was led by the intelligence community. America thought Bahrain was an easy prey that will serve as key to the collapse of the GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council] regime and lead to giant oil companies controlling oil in the Gulf, Shelton ...

Chew on this.
A team of MBA students were the recipients of the 2013 Hult Prize earlier this week, providing them with $1 million in seed money to produce an insect-based, protein-rich flour for feeding malnourished populations in other countries. The product is called Power Flour.
"It's a huge deal because we had a very ambitious but highly executable five-year plan in place," said team captain Mohammed Ashour, whose team hails from McGill University in Montreal. "So winning this prize is a great step in that direction."
Ashour, along with teammates Shobhita Soor, Jesse Pearlstein, Zev Thompson and Gabe Mott, will be immediately working with an advisory board to recruit ...

Putin Depicts Russia as a Bulwark Against European Decadence Post Date: 2013-09-25 00:52:26 by A K A Stone

Listen to Russian president Vladimir Putin these days and youll hear him depicting Russia as the last bulwark of conservative Christian values against the decadence of the rest of Europe. Forgetting Christianity and the accompanying excess of political correctness is leading Europe to a deep moral crisis, he argued on Thursday at the annual Valdai Club conference at a lakeside resort north of Moscow. Russia, with its great history, literature and culture, will resist the tide. He damned multiculturalism, which he called a legacy of colonialism that now even western European countries were beginning to see as a failure. After being condemned internationally for promoting legislation ...

The Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Polish president, whose Solidarity trade union played a key role in bringing an end to the Cold War, said the world had changed and needed new ways of organising itself. We need to expand economic and defence co-operation and other structures to create one state from Poland and Germany in Europe, he said. Speaking to Russias Itar-Tass news agency, Mr Walesa, 69, said national boundaries were not as relevant as they once were. We have travelled so far in our technical advancements that we are no longer located in our own countries, he said, adding that this required changes to geographical structures, the economy and ...
Putin's Letter To The American People [Full Thread] Post Date: 2013-09-11 22:24:46 by A K A Stone

MOSCOW — RECENT events surrounding Syria have prompted me to speak directly to the American people and their political leaders. It is important to do so at a time of insufficient communication between our societies.
Relations between us have passed through different stages. We stood against each other during the cold war. But we were also allies once, and defeated the Nazis together. The universal international organization — the United Nations — was then established to prevent such devastation from ever happening again.
The United Nations’ founders understood that decisions affecting war and peace should happen only by consensus, and with America’s consent the veto by Security ...

AFP - Russian President Vladimir Putin will offer to supply Iran S-300 air defence missile systems as well as build a second reactor at the Bushehr nuclear plant, the Kommersant business daily reported Wednesday. Putin will renew an old offer to supply Iran with five of the sophisticated ground-to-air missile systems at a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rowhani on Friday, Kommersant said, quoting a souce close to the Kremlin. Putin is set to meet Rowhani at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Kyrgyzstan on Friday. Russia in 2007 signed a contract to deliver five of the advanced ground-to-air weapons -- which can take out aircraft or guided missiles -- to Iran ...

The horrifying pictures of dead children being used by the Obama administration to justify an attack on Syria, with the claim that the Assad regime carried out the chemical attacks that killed those children, while emotionally heartbreaking, do not tell the story of those children and do not tell you the main point the Obama administration is trying to coverup. Those children were kidnapped over a week earlier, before they were slaughtered

RAF Typhoon fighters won a mid-air showdown with two Syrian warplanes heading towards Britains main base in Cyprus, the Sunday People reports. The dramatic confrontation came after President Bashar Al-Assads air chiefs sent two Russian-made Sukhoi Su-24s to probe British air defenses, the report said. The Syrian bombers refused to respond to repeated attempts by the control tower at the UKs Akrotiri air base to contact them. RAF pilots flying the advanced combat jet were scrambled before the Sukhois could enter our 14-mile air exclusion zone. The Typhoons which can scream from runway standstill to seven miles high in 90 seconds soared into the sky to ...

Al-Jazeera TV presenter: A seven-year-old Yemeni child was married off by her father to a man her grandfather's age. Human rights organizations in the Abyan province have been dealing with this case. This is not a unique case. Child marriage in Yemen is something of a prevalent social phenomenon, which is shrouded in silence, due to poverty, destitution, and the lack of legal deterrents. This is the story of Basma, the youngest bride in Yemen. Voice of reporter: She looks like your average seven-year-old girl. Basma is playing with the few toys that exist in this humble home in a run-down Abyan village. Nobody can take away one's childhood dreams, even though her childhood was ...

Ismail Kawthari: If the Americans carry out limited military operations, like they say, Washington and its allies, who follow in its footsteps, must realize that they will face a strong and swift response from Syria, Hizbullah, the friends of the Islamic Revolution, and the resistance front, as well as from all the resistance fighters, who believe that people have the right to live in freedom and dignity, without Western interference in their countries' affairs. The United States and its spoiled protégé, Israel, must understand that Syria is not alone and that its allies stand by it. America and all its allies in the region and the world should understand that the ...

Reporter: These are the Kurdish parts of northern Syria. Signs of normal life are evident, even in this time of war. The sheep graze in the fields, but on the horizon, a cloud of smoke rises, because fighting has erupted between the Kurdish People's Defense Units, and Jihadi forces, headed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and the Nusra Front. The fighting rages only five kilometers away, but it does not prevent these children from engaging in soccer, their favorite pastime. We move on. There are many checkpoints, operated by men and women. I encountered military checkpoints in all the Kurdish towns I passed through. I saw dozens of such checkpoints. They say that their ...

Charlie Rose interviewed Syrian President Bashar Assad at the presidential palace in Damascus on Sunday morning. The interview, Assad's first with an American television network in nearly two years, will air in its entirety on PBS's "Charlie Rose" show on Monday night, the same day that President Obama sits down with six television networks for recorded interviews. In the interview, which Rose previewed on CBS's "Face The Nation" on Sunday morning, Assad denied that he had anything to do with the chemical weapons attack that took place on Aug. 21, 2013. Rose also said the Syrian president would not confirm or deny that the regime has chemical ...
