Moscow (AFP) - The US Supreme Court's move to legalise gay marriages triggered heated debate in Russia on Sunday, with one MP saying Facebook should be blocked while a senator urged the adoption of the US army's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. In a show of support for the US Supreme Court's historic decision, Facebook introduced a function allowing users to decorate their profiles with the rainbow flag of the gay rights movement and many Russians added a rainbow filter to their photos. Their opponents immediately came up with a counter move, superimposing a Russian tri-colour against their pictures. Homophobia remains widespread in the country, and almost no ...
The world is defenceless against the next financial crisis, warns BIS Post Date: 2015-06-28 16:29:15 by buckeroo

The world will be unable to fight the next global financial crash as central banks have used up their ammunition trying to tackle the last crises, the Bank of International Settlements has warned. The so-called central bank of central banks launched a scatching critique of global monetary policy in its annual report. The BIS claimed that central banks have backed themselves into a corner after repeatedly cutting interest rates to shore up their economies. These low interest rates have in turn fuelled economic booms, encouraging excessive risk taking. Booms have then turned to busts, which policymakers have responded to with even lower rates. Claudio Borio, head of the ...

Greece will keep its banks and stock market closed on Monday and place restrictions on the withdrawal and transfer of money, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a televised address on Sunday night, as Athens tries to avert a financial collapse. The governments decision to close banks temporarily and impose other so-called capital controls came hours after the European Central Bank said it would not expand an emergency loan program that has been propping up Greek banks in recent weeks while the government was trying to reach a new debt deal with international creditors. Mr. Tsipras said on Sunday night that the European Central Banks decision was an attempt to ...

The Obama Administration wants to go to war with Syria despite strong resistance from Congress, the international community and the American public. Why? The reasoning, according to Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry, is that we cant stand idly by while Assad uses chemical weapons to murder his own citizens (even though there is no irrefutable proof that he has done so). As the worlds preeminent super power, its our duty to confront genocide, war crimes, ethnic purges and humanitarian injustices in every dark corner of the globe no matter what. Or so the argument goes. These are real human beings, real children, parents being affected in ways that are ...

Drivers all over are finding that when they hit the road, the road hits back. Highways built or rebuilt after World War II are scarred with cracks and potholes. Bridges have collapsed. Poorly designed roads have resulted in deaths. Everyone agrees that crumbling highways should be fixed. No one wants to pay the bill. The Situation Engineers say U.S. highways rate a D+ grade. Still, U.S. roads are in better shape than those in Sweden, the U.K., New Zealand and Australia, according to a separate global survey by the World Economic Forum. Even in Germany, where the autobahn was born, western highways are in poor shape because the government shifted ...

Norman Cooling, deputy commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Africa. The Marines will be able to respond quickly to evacuate embassies or protect U.S. property and citizens, a need highlighted by the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador. President Obama has ordered the deployment of 450 U.S. troops to Iraq in order to bolster the fight against the Islamic State terrorist group. While it appears to be a small deployment, the troops will need a base to stay, which in turn would need to be secured by expanding U.S. military umbrella in the region. The White House insists that it is not a shift in overall strategy, although recently it was revealed by officials that there was no strategy on Iraq. President Barack Obama ran on a campaign of winding down foreign wars when he was elected for the office twice in the past. The American base will be constructed in eastern Anbar province, at the Iraqi military base of Taqaddum. It ...
The Pope joins the EU in a sad world of make-believe Post Date: 2015-06-22 16:27:41 by redleghunter

What has a Papal Encyclical calling on the world to end its use of fossil fuels and to pray to God for the success of the global climate summit in December got in common with the Greek euro crisis, the ominous rift between the West and Russia, and the shambles Europe is making over the desperation of African and Syrian refugees to find safety this side of the Mediterranean? They are all different aspects of the two greatest acts of political make-believe of our time, so all-pervasive that it is hard for us to grasp just how much effect they are having on all our lives. When future historians come to look back on our age, few things will puzzle them more than the extent to ...
