Although the attack did not appear to be nationalistic, it underscored the tensions between Israel's Jewish majority and its Arab ...

AN AIR BASE IN IRAQ - The U.S. Air Force has begun moving heavily armed AC-130 airplanes the lethal "flying gunships" of the Vietnam War to a base in Iraq as commanders search for new tools to counter the Iraqi resistance, The Associated Press has learned. An AP reporter saw the first of the turboprop-driven aircraft after it landed at the airfield this week. Four are expected. The Iraq-based special forces command controlling the AC-130s, the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force, said it would have no comment on the deployment. But the plan's general outline was confirmed by other Air Force officers, speaking anonymously because of the sensitivity of the subject. ...

March 2, 2006 (CBS/AP) U.S. officials tell CBS News that intelligence has picked up reports that al Qaeda in Iraq is planning what one source calls the "Big Bang," a spectacular terrorist attack in Iraq against either a single high-profile target or multiple targets simultaneously. Last week's mosque bombing in city of Samarra that brought Iraq to the brink of civil war was the work of terrorists, some U.S. officials have theorized. Abu Musab al-Zarqawi seems to be betting that another big bang would push the country over the brink, reports CBS News correspondent David Martin. The bomb in one of the holiest sites for Shiite Muslims set off violence all across the country that ...

Last week, the U.S. military placed an order for $38 million in depleted uranium rounds, bringing the total amount of the order from a West-Virginia Based company to $77 million for fiscal year 2006. The new order was placed with Alliant Techsystems for 120-mm ammunition. Once the new deal is completed, the company will have produced 35,000 rounds for the U.S. army. In a statement, the company making the deadly weapon said: "Its state-of-the-art composite sabot, propellant, and penetrator technologies give it outstanding accuracy and lethality." The Pentagon uses depleted uranium in its rounds because it says that it is extremely effective in penetrating heavy armor. But critics ...

NEW DELHI (AFP) - One person was killed and dozens injured during demonstrations by Muslims in northern India against President George W. Bush that turned violent hours before the US leader was to wind up his maiden trip to India. Police in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh state, used teargas and truncheons to break up clashes between Muslims and Hindus when the protests degenerated into fierce street riots, said city police chief Ashutoch Pandey. "Muslims after offering prayers went around ordering shops to down their shutters to protest President Bush's visit to India which sparked off the clashes because the Hindus objected," Pandey said. Mar 3, 2006 — WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The top U.S. commander in Iraq said on Friday that the crisis of sectarian violence triggered by last week's bombing of a Shi'ite shrine has passed but refused to rule out the possibility of a civil war. Army Gen. George Casey, briefing reporters at the Pentagon by teleconference from Iraq, also said he has not made any decision yet on whether to recommend to the Pentagon and President George W. Bush reductions in U.S. troop levels in Iraq. Such a recommendation on force size will be made in the spring, he said.. "Is the violence out of control? Clearly not. Now, it appears that the crisis has passed," Casey said. "But we all ...

Iran's hardline president on Friday warned that bullying Western powers and Zionists will fall soon, saying Muslims can no longer tolerate their tyranny and harassment. Mahmoud Ahmedinejad said the root cause of challenges faced by the Muslim world can be found in the "hegemonic tendencies" of certain bullying powers, a clear reference to the United States and Europe. "But domination and bullying will not last much longer. Bullies and Zionists beware, you are going to fall," Ahmedinejad said in a public lecture in Kuala Lumpur on the last day of a three-day official visit. Sudan man forced to 'marry' goat A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal. The goat's owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders. They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi. "We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said. Mr Alifi, Hai Malakal in Upper Nile State, told the Juba Post newspaper that he heard a loud noise around midnight on 13 February and immediately rushed outside to find Mr Tombe with his goat. Developments over the past few days indicate that the Bush administration may be on the verge of announcing the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. If this happens it will be a token political gesture and the worldwide torture and rendition program will not cease. Two top British Labour party ministers and the United Nations have both publicly called for the facility to be shut down. On Friday, the Northern Ireland secretary Peter Hain told BBC One's Question Time: "I would prefer that it wasn't there and I would prefer it was closed." The London Mirror is today reporting that Foreign Secretary Jack Straw's comments, in which he stated, "I am absolutely clear the US ...

Like any good entrepreneur, Palestinian beermaker Nadim Khoury knew that adaptation would be key to his brewery's survival under a government led by the Islamists of Hamas. So anticipating the hardliners' rise to power in January's general election, Khoury decided to develop a new product -- a non-alcoholic microbrew brandished with a label that coordinates perfectly with Hamas's trademark color. "I figured why not have a green label so it will match?" said Khoury, who runs the Taybeh Brewing Company, the only brewery in the Palestinian territories. "All customers will notice the green for the Hamas flag." The alcohol-free version of Taybeh beer, with a label ...

Nearly half of South Korean youths who will be old enough to vote in the country's next elections say Seoul should side with North Korea if the United States attacks the communist nation, according to a poll released Wednesday. At the same time, 40.7 percent of the 1,000 young people surveyed said Seoul should remain neutral in the event of hostilities between Washington and Pyongyang, according to the poll by The Korea Times and Hankook Ilbo dailies. Only 11.6 percent said the South should back its longtime U.S. ally. The poll, conducted Feb. 16-19, surveyed youths between 17 and 23 years old who will be old enough to vote in next year's presidential election. The margin of error was ...

CAIRO, Feb. 21 — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday began a four-day visit to the Middle East, where she hoped to persuade Arab leaders to cut off financial aid to Hamas. But she ran into trouble on her very first stop. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Egypt's foreign minister, told her that Egypt believed funds to the Palestinian government should continue for an indefinite period, to give Hamas "time to develop their own ideas." Egypt gives little if any money to the Palestinians. Still, Washington considers Cairo's view to be influential, one reason Ms. Rice stopped here first. "The Egyptians," a senior administration official said, "carry significant weight ...

LONDON (Reuters) - The dominance of English as the world's top language -- until recently an advantage to both Britain and the United States -- is now beginning to undermine the competitiveness of both nations, according to a major research report. The report commissioned by the British Council says monolingual English graduates "face a bleak economic future" as multilingual competitors flood into the workforce from all corners of the globe. A massive increase in the number of people learning English is under way and likely to peak at around 2 billion in the next decade, according to the report entitled "English Next." Arab Americans see bigotry behind ports uproar

WASHINGTON, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Arab-Americans contended on Tuesday that bias and bigotry, not security concerns, lay behind the uproar over a deal that would place commercial operations at six U.S. ports in the hands of an Arab company. The furor centers around the $6.8 billion acquisition by Dubai Ports World, owned by one of the United Arab Emirates, of London-based Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co. P&O had been running operations at shipping terminals in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami, and Philadelphia. Citing what they say are fears of lax security, politicians from both parties called on President George W. Bush to cancel the deal and several began ...

Bush Aides' Biz Ties To Arab Firm

WASHINGTON - The Dubai firm that won Bush administration backing to run six U.S. ports has at least two ties to the White House. One is Treasury Secretary John Snow, whose agency heads the federal panel that signed off on the $6.8 billion sale of an English company to government-owned Dubai Ports World - giving it control of Manhattan's cruise ship terminal and Newark's container port. Snow was chairman of the CSX rail firm that sold its own international port operations to DP World for $1.15 billion in 2004, the year after Snow left for President Bush's cabinet. The other connection is David Sanborn, who runs DP World's European and Latin American operations and was tapped by Bush last ...

Supreme Court to weigh late-term abortions

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court said Tuesday it will consider the constitutionality of banning a type of late-term abortion, teeing up a contentious issue for a newly-constituted court already in a state of flux over privacy rights. The Bush administration has pressed the high court to reinstate the federal law, passed in 2003 but never put in effect because it was struck down by judges in California, Nebraska and New York. The outcome will likely rest with the two men that President Bush has recently installed on the court. Justices had been split 5-4 in 2000 in striking down a state law, barring what critics call partial birth abortion because it lacked an exception to protect the ...

American officials are probing whether Georgia, situated just northwest of Iran, will allow Washington to use its military bases and airfields in the event of a military conflict with Teheran, The Jerusalem Post reported Monday citing an unnamed Georgian official. The Americans have been putting out feelers, the source, a high-ranking Georgian government foreign affairs official said, in advance of a possible military strike to prevent Iran from achieving nuclear weapons capability. American reports in recent months, speculating about the possibility of a campaign against Iran because of the failure of diplomatic efforts to thwart a potential nuclear weapons program, have suggested that ...
