BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Israeli warplanes attacked Palestinian militant bases in Lebanon Sunday in response to a rocket attack on northern Israel, Lebanese officials said. One militant was killed and at least five were wounded. The Lebanese army said six rockets were fired at a base in eastern Lebanon while several others hit a base near the Mediterranean coast. "Lebanese army anti-aircraft units opened fire at the hostile warplanes," the army said. The jets targeted two militant command posts, one of which was used as a storage facility for weaponry and ammunition, the Israeli army said. The planes carried three raids on a base of the Popular Front for the Liberation of ...

MOGADHISU, Somalia (AP) - Islamic militiamen and rival secular fighters traded machine-gun, rocket and mortar fire in Somalia's capital Saturday, killing at least eight and wounding a dozen as residents fled on foot or in hired minivans. But the fighting was lighter one day after hundreds of residents fled some of the fiercest battles in Mogadishu in 14 years. The violence Saturday - which hospital worker Ali Bile said killed at least eight and wounded at least 12 - stopped in southern Mogadishu after several hours. Sporadic gunfire continued in the northern part of the city. Residents of one district in northern Mogadishu took advantage of the limited fighting to leave the capital on ...

The children of Guantanamo Bay

The notorious US detention camp in Guantanamo Bay has been hit by fresh allegations of human rights abuses, with claims that dozens of children were sent there - some as young as 14 years old. Lawyers in London estimate that more than 60 detainees held at the terrorists' prison camp were boys under 18 when they were captured. They include at least 10 detainees still held at the US base in Cuba who were 14 or 15 when they were seized - including child soldiers who were held in solitary confinement, repeatedly interrogated and allegedly tortured. The disclosures threaten to plunge the Bush administration into a fresh row with Britain, its closest ally in the war on terror, only days ...

POLICE in Nassau Country are installing plastic censors in pub urinals that lecture punters about the perils of drink driving. According to WCBS 880, the device is a Wizmark Urinal Communicator which has a 3.5-inch plastic screen that displays digital files. The device recognises that it is being 'Nintendoed on' and plays an MP3 which suggest you get a cab if you have been drinking. The Wizmark project is being be distributed free to bars located in Nassau County. We notice that something similar has not been put in the ladies, and wonder what will happen when when very drunk people find themselves engaged in an unexpected conversation with Armitage Shanks.

Tony Blair Will Make Britain Look Like It Lost To The Nazis

The police and government of the United Kingdom are trying to make it as inconvenient as possible to live your life without presenting ID at every turn in order to force Britons into relinquishing any notion of personal privacy. On a recent trip to the US I was taken aback by how many times I needed to present my ID in order to do anything - rent a canoe, buy beer, even buy cigarettes. It's just not like that in the UK. The legal age for buying alcohol is 18. I was going into pubs at 16 and getting served. Yesterday, for the first time in my entire life I was told I couldn't purchase four cans of Budweiser because I wasn't able to present ID. This was on my 24th birthday. When the man ...

He said the police had arrested six people. Senior student leader Abdollah Momeni said up to 2,000 students had gathered for the protest over the ...

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Tariq Aziz, once a close member of Saddam Hussein's inner circle, testified for the defense in Saddam Hussein's trial, saying the regime had to strike back with a crackdown on a Shiite town after a 1982 assassination attempt on the former Iraqi leader. The 70-year-old Aziz, a former foreign minister and deputy prime minister, took the stand wearing checkered pajamas and looking pale. Aziz, who is in U.S. custody, has complained of health problems and his family has been pressing for him to be released temporarily for medical treatment. Chief judge Raouf Abdel-Rahman opened the session with a sharp warning to the defense lawyers and the eight defendants that he would ...

The web should remain neutral and resist attempts to fragment it into different services, web inventor Sir Tim Berners-Lee has said. "> Recent attempts in the US to try to charge for different levels of online access web were not "part of the internet model," he said in Edinburgh. He warned that if the US decided to go ahead with a two-tier internet, the network would enter "a dark period". Sir Tim was speaking at the start of a conference on the future of the web. "What's very important from my point of view is that there is one web," he said. "Anyone that tries to chop it into two will find that their piece looks very boring." An ...

North American Union to Replace USA?

President Bush is pursuing a globalist agenda to create a North American Union, effectively erasing our borders with both Mexico and Canada. This was the hidden agenda behind the Bush administration's true open borders policy. Secretly, the Bush administration is pursuing a policy to expand NAFTA politically, setting the stage for a North American Union designed to encompass the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. What the Bush administration truly wants is the free, unimpeded movement of people across open borders with Mexico and Canada. President Bush intends to abrogate U.S. sovereignty to the North American Union, a new economic and political entity which the President is quietly forming, much ...

Khaled el-Masri aimed to sue former CIA chief George Tenet and other officials for their alleged role in the "extraordinary rendition" programme. Mr el-Masri says he was picked up in Macedonia in 2003 and flown to Kabul, Afghanistan, where he alleges torture. The judge did not rule on the truth of the allegations, but said letting the case proceed might endanger security. British scientists have discovered that the putty-nosed monkey in Nigeria pictured above sometimes communicates by combining sounds into a sequence that has a different meaning from any of its component calls, an ability that was thought to be uniquely human. Although many animals communicate with one another using calls that have a particular meaning — usually a warning signifying the presence of a certain ...

In a hardline speech in the city of Arak, where Iran's only existing nuclear reactor is being constructed, he mocked the plans being developed by the UK, France and Germany. "They say they want to offer us incentives," he said. "We tell them: keep the incentives as a gift for yourself. We have no hope of anything good from you. ONE of Africa’s nastiest rebel movements, the Lord’s Resistance Army, has offered talks with the Ugandan Government to end a 20-year conflict that has left thousands dead or mutilated and forced millions from their homes. The Government has accepted the offer, but a deal may be thwarted by the International Criminal Court, which last year indicted five LRA leaders for war crimes. That means they must be arrested on sight. A message from Joseph Kony, the LRA leader, was delivered to President Museveni of Uganda through Sudanese intermediaries last weekend. Mr Museveni has since promised Mr Kony immunity from prosecution until the end of June while the talks take place. But ...

Cheney, Putin Can't Get Beyond Cold War Talk

It is good to hear -- although not surprising -- that President Vladimir Putin does not believe we are returning to the Cold War. His comments to reporters in Sochi over the weekend seem to be a response to U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney's remark in Vilnius, Lithuania, on May 4 that "none of us believes that Russia is fated to become an enemy." Both Cheney and Putin appear to be saying, "We are annoyed that each of our countries is putting itself first and not being what the other wants it to be. But this is not a war. This is a political game while we deal with the issues that we are really preoccupied with: terrorism, nuclear threats, security and energy." It is ...

The professor of history, who's written two books about Chavez's politics, told the London Times: "He is imposing a fascist dictatorship. A totalitarian regime is coming because he doesn't believe in democratic institutions. Hugo controls all the powers." Marksman, whose home was used by ...

Since Beg spoke in an interview with The Associated Press, echoes of his thinking have been heard in Iran, though whether they result directly from his advice isn't known.
