String of Earthquakes

SINGAPORE (AP)—The Asia-Pacific rim is rumbling. While earthquakes are common and even expected along the belt that circles the Pacific Ocean, the Asian side of the rim has been struck particularly hard in the last 18 months by strong seismic activity. In December 2004, an undersea quake triggered the tsunami that killed 131,000 people. Last October, Pakistan was struck by a 7.6-magnitude quake that killed 80,000 people. Numerous smaller temblors rocked the rim until Saturday, when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit central Indonesia, causing nearly 4,000 deaths in the same area that has been bracing for a possible full-scale volcanic eruption. A day later, two powerful earthquakes ...

I went in an Afghan car with a translator and photographer. "We managed to get to within about a half-hour drive of where the accident happened and could hear gunfire. We stopped to ask what was going on. "The mob crowded around the car and people were shouting: 'Let's get them - let's skin them alive'. The world's major powers are ready to guarantee Iran's right to develop nuclear energy provided Tehran cooperates fully with the UN nuclear safety agency, Russian news agencies quoted Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying here. "We are prepared to guarantee Iran's right to peaceful nuclear energy on the condition that it answers the questions that the IAEA has raised," Interfax and ITAR-TASS news agencies quoted Lavrov as saying, referring to the International Atomic Energy Agency. Lavrov said representatives of the five permanent UN Security Council countries along with Germany were talking this week about formulating a basis for resumption of negotiation with Iran over ...

Russian defense minister Sergei Ivanov Friday reiterated Moscow’s commitment to supply Iran with sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles, Interfax news agency reported. “If there are no extraordinary circumstances, it (the contract) will without doubt be fulfilled,” Ivanov was quoted as saying. Defense Ministry officials have previously said Moscow would supply 29 sophisticated Tor-M1 air defense missile systems to Iran under a ˆ546.5m contract, according to Russian media reports. The move was likely to upset the United States, which last month called on all countries to stop all arms exports to Iran and to end all nuclear cooperation with it to put pressure on Tehran ...

WASHINGTON - The fallout from the killing of as many as two dozen Iraqi civilians by Marines could undermine U.S. efforts in Iraq more than the Abu Ghraib prison scandal did, a lawmaker who is a prominent war critic said Sunday. The shootings last November at Haditha, a city in the Anbar province of western Iraq that has been plagued by insurgents, were covered up, said Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record), D-Pa. "Who covered it up, why did they cover it up, why did they wait so long?" Murtha said on "This Week" on ABC. "We don't know how far it goes. It goes right up the chain of command." A bomb rocked a military convoy on Nov. 19, killing a ...

MORE than 20 babies have been aborted in advanced pregnancy because scans showed that they had club feet, a deformity readily corrected by surgery or physiotherapy. According to figures from the Office for National Statistics covering the years from 1996 to 2004, a further four babies were aborted because they had webbed fingers or extra digits, which are also corrected by simple surgery. All the terminations took place late in pregnancy, after 20 weeks. Last year, according to campaigners, a healthy baby was aborted in the sixth month at a hospital in southeast England after ultrasound images indicated part of its foot was missing. News of the terminations has reignited the debate over ...

BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) - Israeli warplanes attacked Palestinian militant bases in Lebanon Sunday in response to a rocket attack on northern Israel, Lebanese officials said. One militant was killed and at least five were wounded. The Lebanese army said six rockets were fired at a base in eastern Lebanon while several others hit a base near the Mediterranean coast. "Lebanese army anti-aircraft units opened fire at the hostile warplanes," the army said. The jets targeted two militant command posts, one of which was used as a storage facility for weaponry and ammunition, the Israeli army said. The planes carried three raids on a base of the Popular Front for the Liberation of ...

MOGADHISU, Somalia (AP) - Islamic militiamen and rival secular fighters traded machine-gun, rocket and mortar fire in Somalia's capital Saturday, killing at least eight and wounding a dozen as residents fled on foot or in hired minivans. But the fighting was lighter one day after hundreds of residents fled some of the fiercest battles in Mogadishu in 14 years. The violence Saturday - which hospital worker Ali Bile said killed at least eight and wounded at least 12 - stopped in southern Mogadishu after several hours. Sporadic gunfire continued in the northern part of the city. Residents of one district in northern Mogadishu took advantage of the limited fighting to leave the capital on ...

The notorious US detention camp in Guantanamo Bay has been hit by fresh allegations of human rights abuses, with claims that dozens of children were sent there - some as young as 14 years old. Lawyers in London estimate that more than 60 detainees held at the terrorists' prison camp were boys under 18 when they were captured. They include at least 10 detainees still held at the US base in Cuba who were 14 or 15 when they were seized - including child soldiers who were held in solitary confinement, repeatedly interrogated and allegedly tortured. The disclosures threaten to plunge the Bush administration into a fresh row with Britain, its closest ally in the war on terror, only days ...

POLICE in Nassau Country are installing plastic censors in pub urinals that lecture punters about the perils of drink driving. According to WCBS 880, the device is a Wizmark Urinal Communicator which has a 3.5-inch plastic screen that displays digital files. The device recognises that it is being 'Nintendoed on' and plays an MP3 which suggest you get a cab if you have been drinking. The Wizmark project is being be distributed free to bars located in Nassau County. We notice that something similar has not been put in the ladies, and wonder what will happen when when very drunk people find themselves engaged in an unexpected conversation with Armitage Shanks.

The police and government of the United Kingdom are trying to make it as inconvenient as possible to live your life without presenting ID at every turn in order to force Britons into relinquishing any notion of personal privacy. On a recent trip to the US I was taken aback by how many times I needed to present my ID in order to do anything - rent a canoe, buy beer, even buy cigarettes. It's just not like that in the UK. The legal age for buying alcohol is 18. I was going into pubs at 16 and getting served. Yesterday, for the first time in my entire life I was told I couldn't purchase four cans of Budweiser because I wasn't able to present ID. This was on my 24th birthday. When the man ...

The 70-year-old Aziz, a former foreign minister and deputy prime minister, took the stand wearing checkered pajamas and looking pale. Chief judge Raouf Abdel-Rahman opened the session with a sharp warning to the defense lawyers and the eight defendants that he would ...

"> Recent attempts in the US to try to charge for different levels of online access web were not "part of the internet model," he said in Edinburgh. He warned that if the US decided to go ahead with a two-tier internet, the network would enter "a dark period". Sir Tim was speaking at the start of a conference on the future of the web. "What's very important from my point of view is that there is one web," he said. "Anyone that tries to chop it into two will find that their piece looks very boring." An ...

President Bush is pursuing a globalist agenda to create a North American Union, effectively erasing our borders with both Mexico and Canada. This was the hidden agenda behind the Bush administration's true open borders policy. Secretly, the Bush administration is pursuing a policy to expand NAFTA politically, setting the stage for a North American Union designed to encompass the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. What the Bush administration truly wants is the free, unimpeded movement of people across open borders with Mexico and Canada. President Bush intends to abrogate U.S. sovereignty to the North American Union, a new economic and political entity which the President is quietly forming, much ...
