Morgan Stanley posts first quarterly loss, and welcomes Chinese investor

NEW YORK: Morgan Stanley posted its first quarterly loss ever Wednesday after taking an additional $5.7 billion write-down related to subprime mortgages. The investment bank also said it would sell a $5 billion stake to China Investment Corp., a sovereign wealth fund, to shore up its capital. The sale, which would give the Chinese government a stake of about 9.9 percent in one of Wall Street's biggest investment banks, is the latest example of a foreign investor aiding a Western financial firm after the housing meltdown. Morgan Stanley's fourth-quarter loss of $3.59 billion, or $3.61 a share, was a sharp drop from its year-earlier profit of $1.98 billion, or $1.87 a share. ...

Fed Loans Banks $20 Billion

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cash-strapped banks took the Federal Reserve up on its offer of $20 billion in short-term loans to help them overcome credit problems, but the interest rate wasn't as low as some had hoped. ADVERTISEMENT The central bank said Wednesday that it had received bids for $61.6 billion worth of loans, more than three times the amount that was made available. The loans carried an interest rate of 4.65 percent, which is slightly less than the 4.75 percent the Fed charges banks on emergency loans through its "discount" window. Banks have been reluctant to use the Fed's discount window because of the fear that investors will believe they are having trouble getting ...

The government's assaults on our common sense, our wallets, and our dignity are becoming so numerous that one is hard pressed to keep up. The media pivot like a herd of wildebeests from one scandal to the other – from illegal wiretapping, to torture, to mercenaries, to saber rattling in the Persian Gulf, to $4 billion lost at Homeland Security, to $9 billion stolen in Iraq. Amid such a blur of perfidy, major events that portend disaster in the future can slip by with barely a notice by the media, by Congress, or by the public at large. For example, does one voter in a hundred know that the Department of Defense has quietly activated a new regional military command? Just type in ...

Drive-through customers get 45-minute time limit - Enforcement firm issues £125 bills for overstaying The question of just how long it should take to eat fast food is being answered by the burger giant McDonald's, which is making customers finish within 45 minutes or face a charge of £125. Motorists who care to linger over their McMeals for any longer at some drive-throughs are receiving demands from a private company that manages car parks for the burger chain. If they do not pay, the fee rises steadily and customers are threatened with court action and approached by bailiffs. A spokeswoman for McDonald's said the 45-minute restrictions had been introduced at about 40 ...

Pakistan: Blank TV Screens

ISLAMABAD — When I returned to Pakistan two months ago, the country was preparing for elections, and myriad private television channels were blasting criticism of the President, General Pervez Musharraf, around the clock, while the activist courts held the government’s feet to the fire. This weekend, everything changed. Between Saturday night and Sunday morning, Pakistan, it seems, tumbled from aspiring democracy to totalitarian state. The first sign of dramatic change was when the television screens went blank at around 5 p.m. on Saturday. Soon afterward I found out - but only by calling my parents in Britain who were glued to the BBC - that Pakistan was in the grip of a state ...

Pak Dictator Getting His U.S. Money -- in Cash

Diverting counterterror funds to joust against India was just the start for Pakistani dictator Pervez Murhsarraf. Turns out he's getting a major chunk of his American aid -- in cash. Spencer Ackerman has the scoop. A considerable amount of the money the U.S. gives to Pakistan is administered not through U.S. agencies or joint U.S.-Pakistani programs. Instead, the U.S. gives Musharraf's government about $200 million annually and his military $100 million monthly in the form of direct cash transfers. Once that money leaves the U.S. Treasury, Musharraf can do with it whatever he wants. He needs only promise in a secret annual meeting that he'll use it to invest in the Pakistani ...

Encrypted E-Mail Company Hushmail Spills to Feds

Hushmail, a longtime provider of encrypted web-based email, markets itself by saying that "not even a Hushmail employee with access to our servers can read your encrypted e-mail, since each message is uniquely encoded before it leaves your computer." But it turns out that statement seems not to apply to individuals targeted by government agencies that are able to convince a Canadian court to serve a court order on the company. A September court document (.pdf) from a federal prosecution of alleged steroid dealers reveals the Canadian company turned over 12 CDs worth of e-mails from three Hushmail accounts, following a court order obtained through a mutual assistance treaty ...

Oil price creates a new world order

As the price of oil surges above the symbolic milestone of $US100 ($106) a barrel - with Malaysia's TAPIS crude hitting $US100.54 yesterday - it is creating new winners and losers across the globe. In southern China, high oil prices forced Wang Pui, a truck driver, to wait in line 90 minutes the other day to fill up, just to be told he could pump only 98 litres, as China faced spot shortages of petrol and diesel. When Vladimir Putin was making Russia's bid to be host of the 2014 Winter Olympics last July, he reached into the country's deep pockets, bulging with oil profits, and pledged $US12 billion to turn a Black Sea summer resort into a winter-sports paradise. Russia, which ...

A US defence department advisory board has warned of the danger that American war robots scheduled for delivery within a decade might be riddled with malicious code. The kill machines will use software largely written overseas, and it is feared that sinister forces might meddle with it in production, thus gaining control of the future mechanoid military. The most eye-catching of the equipment mentioned is the lineup of the US Army's Future Combat Systems (FCS) programme. FCS was originally supposed to include a wide range of deadly unmanned systems, including a small, possibly rocket-firing flying Dalek, a heavily armed autonomous helicopter gunship, and a robot tank packing guided ...

Paul Raises More Than $3.5M in One Day

WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, aided by an extraordinary outpouring of Internet support Monday, hauled in more than $3.5 million in 20 hours. Paul, the Texas congressman with a Libertarian tilt and an out-of-Iraq pitch, entered heady fundraising territory with a surge of Web-based giving tied to the commemoration of Guy Fawkes Day. Fawkes was a British mercenary who failed in his attempt to kill King James I on Nov. 5, 1605. He also was the model for the protagonist in the movie "V for Vendetta." Paul backers motivated donors on the Internet with mashed-up clips of the film on the online video site YouTube as well as the Guy Fawkes Day refrain: ...

Alive and safe, the brutal Japanese soldiers who butchered 20,000 Allied seamen in cold blood

The perpetrators of some of the worst atrocities of the Second World War remain alive and unpunished in Japan, according to a damning new book. Painstaking research by British historian Mark Felton reveals that the wartime behaviour of the Japanese Navy was far worse than their counterparts in Hitler's Kriegsmarine. According to Felton, officers of the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered the deliberately sadistic murders of more than 20,000 Allied seamen and countless civilians in cold-blooded defiance of the Geneva Convention. Crewmen on the submarine I-8, where Allied prisoners were slaughtered "Many of the Japanese sailors who committed such terrible deeds are still alive ...

Ankara, Nov 1 (RIA Novosti) Turkey has said it expects urgent action from the US to destroy Kurdish insurgent bases in northern Iraq. "We expect the US to take urgent, concrete steps against terrorist bases," Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is set to meet US President George W. Bush Nov 5 to discuss Kurdish rebellion, told parliament Tuesday. Turkey is not receiving adequate support in fighting terror from leading world and regional powers, he said. "Turkey's patience has run out. We will discuss with the US about countries that are harbouring terrorists, as well as measures that are necessary to fight terrorism," Erdogan said. Because when people get an education, find success in their careers and make money they tend to consume more energy and natural resources. And that, of course, is bad This passage is taken from the Education for Sustainable Development Toolkit, which was written by Dr. Rosalyn McKeown of the University of Tennessee: Generally, more highly educated people, who have higher incomes, consume more resources than poorly educated people, who tend to have lower incomes. In this case, more education increases the threat to sustainability. . . Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Statistical Yearbook and World Education Report, for example, show that in the United ...

Wall Street drilling for Middle East riches

Wall Street bankers are flocking to the Middle East, and it's not for oil or the balmy weather. Years of raging energy prices have made the states surrounding the Persian Gulf one of the fastest-growing regions and a source of immense wealth seeking investments at home and around the world. The sovereign investment arms of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Kuwait have an estimated $1.5 trillion at their disposal. So it's little surprise that Goldman Sachs Group, Morgan Stanley and other investment banks have secured banking licenses and opened offices to develop a local presence in the Gulf, same as they have in the so-called BRIC markets of Brazil, ...

Scientists Find Oldest Living Animal, Then Kill It

A clam that lived on the seabed in the frigid waters off Iceland's north coast has been hailed as the longest-lived animal ever discovered. The mollusc, which is thought to have lurked beneath the waves until at least the age of 405, would have been a juvenile when Galileo picked up his first telescope, Hamlet was first staged and the gunpowder plot failed to blow up King James I. The Arctica islandica clam was plucked from 80m-deep water by researchers at Bangor University in Wales, who were dredging the north Iceland shelf for the creatures. By studying their shells, the scientists hope to learn how the marine environment has changed in recent centuries. The clam was alive when it ...

In another sign of potential friction in the warming Arctic, Canada has warned that it will step up patrols of the Northwest Passage. Record summer melting of sea-ice has made the passage fully navigable; and immediately escalated a dispute over who controls the route. Canada maintains the waterway that connects the Atlantic with the Pacific lies within its territorial waters. It has backed that up with plans for a new military base in the Arctic. However, the United States, and other countries claim international rights to use the route for shipping.
