(Reuters) - President Barack Obama has signed a secret order authorizing covert U.S. government support for rebel forces seeking to oust Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, government officials told Reuters on Wednesday. Obama signed the order, known as a presidential "finding", within the last two or three weeks, according to four U.S. government sources familiar with the matter. Such findings are a principal form of presidential directive used to authorize secret operations by the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA and the White House declined immediate comment. News that Obama had given the authorization surfaced as the President and other U.S. and allied officials spoke openly ...

‘Freelance jihadists’ join Libyan rebelsEx-al Qaeda member speaks out A Libyan rebel waves a “magic box” bracelet thought to have been captured from a foreigner fighting with Col. Moammar Gadhafi’stroops, on the frontline outside of Bin Jawaad on Tuesday. The wearers believe the bracelets will protect them from injury. A former leader of Libya’s al Qaeda affiliate says he thinks “freelance jihadists” have joined the rebel forces, as NATO’s commander told Congress on Tuesday that intelligence indicates some al Qaeda and Hezbollah terrorists are fighting Col. Moammar Gadhafi’s forces. Former jihadist Noman Benotman, who renounced his al ...

Rolling Stone published horrific photos reportedly taken by members of the U.S. Military who allegedly were part of what is being called the "Kill Team." These individuals have been described by the Army, according to Rolling Stone, as a "rogue unit" operating completely on its own, "without the knowledge of its superiors.” Rolling Stone's Mark Boal reports: Indeed, it would have been hard not to know about the murders, given that the soldiers of 3rd Platoon took scores of photographs chronicling their kills and their time in Afghanistan. The photos, obtained by Rolling Stone, portray a front-line culture among U.S. troops in which killing Afghan ...

Rebels retreat from Libya oil port under attack Rebels retreated Wednesday from the key Libyan oil port of Ras Lanouf along the coastal road leading to the capital Tripoli after they came under heavy shelling from ground forces loyal to leader Moammar Gadhafi. NATO planes flew over the zone where the heaviest fighting was under way and an Associated Press reporter at the scene heard explosions, indicating a new wave of airstrikes against Gadhafi's forces. NATO has intervened in the Libyan conflict with near daily airstrikes to weaken the regime's superior military power vis-a-vis the poorly trained and badly equipped ragtag rebel army. A rebel near the front lines told the AP ...

Syrian president blames protests on 'conspirators'

DAMASCUS, Syria – Syria's president has blamed the wave of protests against his authoritarian rule on "conspirators" — but he failed to offer any concessions to appease the extraordinary wave of dissent. In an unusually short speech, President Bashar Assad blamed satellite TV stations and other media of fabricating lies and said Syria has overcome conspiracies targeting it before and will do so again. Assad had been widely expected to announce a series of reforms. Wednesday's speech was his first to the nation since the protests erupted nearly two weeks ago. Human rights groups say more than 60 people have been killed since March 18 in a crackdown on the ...

Japan is suffering through a horrendous series of back-to-back catastrophes that are starting to make the world question whether or not Japan will survive. I've been to Japan 25+ times. Japan is a great country. The Japanese are a great people. They will survive these catastrophes. However, they may not be able to survive their own brain dead politics which have: A.) Kept Japan in a rolling recession for 20 years because the politicians refuse to reform their financial system. B.) Torpedoed population growth by discouraging young women from marrying and having babies. (Only single women can really have careers in Japan, so many young women just don't get married and don't ...

Speaking at the House of Councilors Budget Committee on Tuesday, Kan said the situation at the plant "continues to be unpredictable" and that the government "will tackle the problem while in a state of maximum alert." He gave the assurance to the parliamentary committee after traces of radioactive water as well as highly toxic plutonium were detected outside the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Kan told the House that he planned to present a quake-relief ...

Where is Obama's Kinetic Military Assistance? Libyan rebels' @$$e$ kicked in Gadhafi hometown

Libyan rebels pushed back from Gadhafi hometown BIN JAWWAD, Libya – Libyan government tanks and rockets blunted a rebel assault on Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte on Tuesday and drove back the ragtag army of irregulars, even as world leaders prepared to debate the country's future in London. Rockets and tank fire sent Libya's rebel volunteers in a panicked scramble away from the front lines, before the opposition was able to bring up truck mounted rocket launchers of their own and return fire. The latest rebel setback emphasizes the see-saw nature of this conflict and how the opposition is still no match for the superior firepower and organization of Gadhafi's ...

They emphasized its "humanitarian" motives, noting repeatedly that Muammar Qaddafi had vowed to crush his domestic adversaries with "no mercy." But under interrogation, Gates and Clinton exposed what's really driving our participation in the Libya campaign: the wishes of other governments. Jake Tapper asked ...

Obama aides find moral clarity in Libya's foggy war United Nations Ambassador Susan Rice (R) answers reporters' questions during a press briefing at the White House February28, 2011 in Washington, DC. "I swore to myself that if I ever faced such a crisis again," Susan Rice said about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, "I would come down on the side of dramatic action, going down in flames if that was required." Now that Rice is U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and played a leading role in the Obama administration's decision to attack Libya, this passage from a 2001 Atlantic Monthly article is striking -- all the more so because the author was Samantha ...

Ran, a writer and literature magazine editor from southwest Sichuan province, who had been detained without charge for more than a month, was formally arrested on the charge of inciting subversion of state power, Wang Yi, a Christian activist in Sichuan and a friend of Ran, told Reuters. SANAA, Yemen (AP) - Islamic militants seized control of a weapons factory, a strategic mountain and a nearby town in the southern Yemen province of Abyan Sunday, said a witness and security officials, as a political stalemate in the capital causes security to unravel around the country. The fragile nation has been rocked by weeks of mass protests against the long-serving president Ali Abdullah Saleh, who refuses to step down. Saleh's fate is of deep concern to the U.S. as he is a key ally in the fight against al-Qaida, but with his attention on massive anti-government protests in the capital, security has declined in the provinces. Residents of the southern Abyan province said police ...

Obama Officials: No proof of civilians killed in Libya strikes

The Obama administration says the Libyan government's claims of civilians killed in airstrikes are unproven. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says "the truth of the matter is we have trouble coming up with proof of any civilian casualties that we have been responsible for." Gates said there were numerous intelligence reports suggesting Moammar Gadhafi's regime was taking bodies of people killed by the pro-government forces and placing them at sites attacked by U.S. planes. Gates said the American forces and those of other countries enforcing the U.N. resolution to protect Libyan civilians have been "extremely careful." Gates spoke Saturday in an interview ...

US officials: Libyan operation could last months WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S.-led military action in Libya has bolstered rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafi's forces, but the international operation could continue for months, the Obama administration says. Ahead of President Barack Obama's national address Monday to explain his decision to act against the Libyan leader, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in appearances on the Sunday talk shows that the intervention had effectively rendered Gadhafi's forces defenseless against air attacks and created the conditions for opposition advances westward. In interviews taped Saturday, Gates and ...

Libyan War Hypocrisy

The reaction to the Libyan war on all sides has been hilarious and the worst demonstration of hypocrisy that I have ever seen. Republicans who cheered Bush when he attacked Iraq are now up in arms about Obama doing essentially the same thing. On the other side, the same Democrats who attacked Bush are either cheering Obama or remaining silent. The ONLY two groups who have been completely consistent are the far-far left (Dennis Kucinich, Ralph Nader, Cindy Sheehan, etc.) and libertarians (Judge Napolitano, Ron Paul, Rand Paul, etc). Obama's foreign escapade has done a great job uncovering how screwed up things have really become in America.

Islamist Group the Muslim Brotherhood Is Rising Force in a New Egypt

CAIRO — In post-revolutionary Egypt, where hope and confusion collide in the daily struggle to build a new nation, religion has emerged as a powerful political force, following an uprising that was based on secular ideals. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group once banned by the state, is at the forefront, transformed into a tacit partner with the military government that many fear will thwart fundamental changes. It is also clear that the young, educated secular activists who initially propelled the nonideological revolution are no longer the driving political force — at least not at the moment. As the best organized and most extensive opposition movement in Egypt, the ...

Gates calls for Syrian forces to move aside Syria should follow Egypt’s lead and the Syrian army should “empower a revolution”, Robert Gates, US secretary of defence, argued as thousands marched in a southern city. Mr Gates made his comments – some of the toughest remarks to date by a US official about the rule of Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president – on a day of further upheaval in the Middle East and beyond. The White House signalled it was preparing for a change in power in Yemen, where it has been allied with the government of Ali Abdullah Saleh, president. Nato allies reached a deal in which the alliance will take over command of the Libyan no-fly zone, ...

White House: Libya fight is not war, it's 'kinetic military action' In the last few days, Obama administration officials have frequently faced the question: Is the fighting in Libya a war? From military officers to White House spokesmen up to the president himself, the answer is no. But that leaves the question: What is it? In a briefing on board Air Force One Wednesday, deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes took a crack at an answer. "I think what we are doing is enforcing a resolution that has a very clear set of goals, which is protecting the Libyan people, averting a humanitarian crisis, and setting up a no-fly zone," Rhodes said. "Obviously that ...

As I pointed out earlier this week, Hillary Clinton was actually one of the driving forces behind our military actions in Libya. She was the one who convinced the Arab League of Nations to support a no-fly zone - a no-fly zone that now none of them wish to help enforce. Hillary gets on the horn Obama and said, "Hey, Barack, ya gotta do this," and the next thing you know we are launching Tomahawk missiles in Libya. Congressional approval? Apparently that wasn't even on the discussion agenda. For a multitude of reasons, Hillary felt like we needed to act immediately. Well ... that was now. What about then? Hillary's actions in the past week might well have not passed her ...

The family of a Libyan soldier killed in an allied airstrike quickly listed all those they blame in his death — al-Qaida militants, Al-Jazeera television and "the Crusader conspiracy to divide Libya." It mimicked nearly word for word the rhetoric that Moammar Gadhafi's state television has been using to explain the revolt that has engulfed the country. In public, where Gadhafi is in charge, people are on message. The regime has been keeping up a drumbeat of propaganda in the Tripoli-centered west of the country under its control. Even so, some still whisper their opposition to the Libyan leader. State-run newscasts are filled with conspiracy theories, like Western ...
