It stands just three feet tall, is covered in long brown fur, and communicates using a distinctive honking bark. It may look and behave like any other monkey, but to scientists this new species of African primate represents one of the most important finds in a generation. A study of the species living in the remote mountain forests of Tanzania has found that it belongs to its own unique classification or genus - the first new primate genus for 83 years. The discovery of the monkey was first announced last year, but it is only now that scientists have been able to study it in fine enough detail to realise its significance. "The discovery of a new primate species is an amazing event, ...

CIA hit by scandal within a scandal

WASHINGTON - It is the scandal within the CIA scandal - a lurid tale of poker parties, booze and prostitutes involving Congressmen, dodgy businessmen and senior officials from America's disaster-prone spy agency. The imbroglio came to light with the sacking of Porter Goss after a disastrous 18 month spell as CIA director. It now threatens yet more turmoil at the agency, as the Senate embarks on what are sure to be torrid confirmation hearings next week for Gen. Michael Hayden, Mr Goss's designated successor. Federal agents today searched the home and office of the CIA's former third-highest ranking official who is under investigation over his ties with a figure in a congressional bribery ...

Iran Leader Calls Israel an 'Evil' Regime

Iran's president on Thursday called Israel's government a "regime based on evil," but also said he was ready to negotiate with the United States and other countries over his country's nuclear program. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has previously said Israel should be wiped off the map, also told a cheering crowd of students in Indonesia's capital that the Jewish state "cannot continue and one day will vanish." Students in the crowd held up posters saying "Iran in our Hearts," and "Nuclear for Peace." Ahmadinejad made his comments after key U.N. Security Council members agreed to present Tehran with a choice of incentives or sanctions in deciding whether ...

The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, today compared the US to a wolf who "eats without listening" as a public spat between the two countries on the best way to deal with Iran intensified. Washington and Moscow are split on the appropriate action to take against Iran following the announcement last month from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that the country had mastered uranium enrichment. Russia has made clear that it agrees Iran should not have nuclear weapons but questions whether the country is actively seeking a bomb and whether sanctions would be effective. 5.45pm Putin hits out at Washington as Iran dispute intensifies Staff and agencies Wednesday May 10, 2006 The ...

Bush Takes Swipe at Kremlin

U.S. President George Bush accused Russia of "economic nationalism" while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the White House ill-informed as the United States and Russia waded deeper into a verbal spat between the two former foes. The jousting, which stems from comments made last week by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, revolves around U.S. concerns over Russia's commitment to democracy and its reliability as an energy supplier. Bush said Friday that he had a "warm" relationship with President Vladimir Putin, but that Russia appeared ambivalent about democracy and open to using oil to achieve political ends. The president's comments were part of an interview Friday ...

Flying robot attack "unstoppable": experts

It may sound like science fiction, but the prospect that suicide bombers and hijackers could be made redundant by flying robots is a real one, according to experts. The technology for remote-controlled light aircraft is now highly advanced, widely available -- and, experts say, virtually unstoppable. Models with a wingspan of five metres (16 feet), capable of carrying up to 50 kilograms (110 pounds), remain undetectable by radar. And thanks to satellite positioning systems, they can now be programmed to hit targets some distance away with just a few metres (yards) short of pinpoint accuracy. Security services the world over have been considering the problem for several years, but no one ...

Moussaoui's mother: UK is the culprit

LONDON: A busy, blooming British capital, long criticised by governments around the world as 'Londonistan', home to 'terrorists of every sort', stopped to search its soul within hours of the contemptuous allegation levelled at it by Zacarias Moussaoui's mother: "Life in London made my boy a terrorist". Even as the 37-year-old French-Moroccan became the only person to be charged and convicted in the US in connection with 9/11, Moussaoui's mother, Aicha al-Wafi, repeated a charge leveled at London by the French counter-intelligence service, DST. London and the British authorities, the DST alleged, was far too permissive to extremist visitors from other lands in the fatal countdown ...

THE archeologists could barely hide their excitement. Beneath the main square of Ecija, a small town in southern Spain, they had unearthed an astounding treasure trove of Roman history. They discovered a well-preserved Roman forum, bath house, gymnasium and temple as well as dozens of private homes and hundreds of mosaics and statues — one of them considered to be among the finest found. But now the bulldozers have moved in. The last vestiges of the lost city known as Colonia Augusta Firma Astigi — one of the great cities of the Roman world — have been destroyed to build an underground municipal car park. Dr Sonia Zakrzewski, a senior lecturer in archeology at Southampton ...

New role for IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is planning urgent talks between the world’s leading economic powers over the coming months after the organisation’s biggest shake-up in four decades gave it new powers to avert the threat of a global crisis. The new role for the IMF heralds a drop in status for the G7 -- the gathering of finance ministers and central bank governors from the United States, Britain, Germany, Italy, France, Japan and Canada. The emergence of China and India in recent years has made the G7 unrepresentative of the new global economy and unable to offer solutions to global imbalances. Member countries moved swiftly at the weekend after the fund warned that strong ...

TWO goldminers trapped underground and feared dead for five days were found alive last night as a Tasmanian town's grim vigil ended in an astounding story of survival and celebration. "They're alive, they're alive, they're alive," cried Todd Russell's mother, Kaye, as she ran to the Uniting Church in Beaconsfield, where townspeople were praying for Mr Russell, 34, and Brant Webb, 37. Mr Russell's father was able to speak to his son as rescuers inched closer to freeing them. The national secretary of the Australian Workers Union, Bill Shorten, said: "The father has spoken to the son by radio phone. They are wedged under a rock. They have spoken to a doctor - they are in ...

The official requested anonymity, citing ongoing negotiations. "They are preparing an application," he said. "They came to the conclusion that [Shushary] suited them." Mark Kempe, a spokesman for GM Europe, on Thursday confirmed that the company was interested in "extending, not replacing" its presence in ...

WASHINGTON - Three human rights groups said Wednesday that they had found credible evidence that U.S. troops and government civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had abused, tortured or killed at least 460 detainees. The researchers said they had found 330 cases of abuse and that only about half of them had been fully investigated, and one-third never were investigated or remained unresolved. The findings are in a report by New York University's Center for Human Rights and Global Justice, Human Rights First and Human Rights Watch. At least 600 U.S. service members or civilians have been implicated in the cases of abuse. About 400 of them have been investigated, and only ...

If Past Is Prologue, George Bus Is Becoming An Increasingly Dangerous President By John W. Dean 4-21-6 President George W. Bush's presidency is a disaster - one that's still unfolding. In a mid-2004 column, I argued that, at that point, Bush had already demonstrated that he possessed the least attractive and most troubling traits among those that political scientist James Dave Barber has cataloged in his study of Presidents' personality types. Now, in early 2006, Bush has continued to sink lower in his public approval ratings, as the result of a series of events that have sapped the public of confidence in its President, and for which he is directly responsible. This Administration goes ...

European cartoonists <>http://muhammadcartoons.com/> <>http://muhammadcartoons.com/> have stirred up a controversy satirizing Muhammed, the Muslim prophet. One of the more creative panels shows the Prophet looking down from heaven at a long line of suicide bombers, pleading for them to stop because "We have run out of virgins!" What the Prophet really needs is a Howard Dean to implement liberal dogma: - Redistribution of Wealth: Rewarding each suicide bomber with 72 virgins is obscene, especially since disadvantaged (non-Martyr) Muslims are forced to survive with far fewer. A progressive formula for equitable redistribution of wealth is required to level ...

Israel Army Radio reported today that the U.S. has agreed to release imprisoned Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard in exchange for the release of Fatah leader and convicted murderer Marwan Barghouti, who is serving multiple life terms for his role in killing five Israeli civilians. A similar proposal in 2004, reported by WorldNetDaily, was rejected by Washington and Pollard, himself. According to today's reports, Israel is prepared to offer the proposed exchange to the Palestinian Authority within the next few months. Observers see the release of Barghouti as an attempt by Israel to strengthen the Fatah movement against the new government led by Hamas. Marwan Barghouti Barghouti, now a ...

He actually responds to almost every post on his website - like some kind of evangelist or a boy sticking his fingers in the proverbial dike. For readers not familiar with Dr. Barnett, he is a political scientist who works for the Pentagon and wrote the book "The Pentagon's New Roadmap." Naturally, [controlled] editors have given him high praise. The rest of us "peons" can readily see it for it truly is, and the title of his book says it all. In past articles I've briefly referred to ...
