Todd Rundgren is the new singer for the reformed band the Cars

The good times are rolling again for The New Cars (tickets | music), comprised of original Cars guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes, and the rhythm section of bassist Kasim Sulton (Utopia, Meat Loaf, Celine Dion, Hall & Oates) and Tubes drummer Prairie Prince. Taking over frontman duties in lieu of Ric Ocasek is Todd Rundgren (tickets | music). The reformed version of the seminal 1980s New Wave group--currently enjoying something of a resurgence thanks to a Circuit City advertisement and a clearly heard influence on bands like The Killers, Fountains of Wayne, and Weezer--plans to release a live album titled "It's Alive" and hit the road for the first time in 17 ...

The Zombies Rise Again - Time of The Season is this fall

By Ray Waddell NASHVILLE (Billboard) - The Zombies are very much alive. Rod Argent, founder of the seminal British rock group, will follow up a summer run as a member of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band with a U.S. tour by the Zombies. "I never wanted to just re-form the Zombies," Argent says, adding that the reunion had to include "doing some new stuff as well. It sounds like a fresh new band with an immense amount of energy, (plus) we're really happy to do all of the old stuff. It's a blast to do those songs live." When Argent's post-Zombies group Argent ("Hold Your Head Up") split in 1975, he says, "I thought at the time that my musical career was ...

PARANGTRITIS, INDONESIA - As the earthquake struck in the predawn light last Saturday, Suripto could only think of one thing as he looked out over the crashing waves and dark-sand beach: a tsunami. At 5:30 a.m., Suripto, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, was preparing chilled coconut juice for tourists. "I learned [from TV] that you have to watch the waves to see if they recede, he says. "I was ready to run - then nothing happened. Then I started helping my community." Like Suripto, aid workers and government agencies are taking their experiences from the 2004 tsunami and applying those lessons to Indonesia's latest calamity, the May 27 earthquake on the ...

TORONTO - Canadian police foiled a homegrown terrorist attack by arresting 17 suspects, apparently inspired by al-Qaida, who obtained three times the amount of an explosive ingredient used in the Oklahoma City bombing, officials said Saturday. The FBI said the Canadian suspects may have had "limited contact" with two men recently arrested on terrorism charges in Georgia. About 400 regional police and federal agents participated in the arrests Friday and early Saturday. "These individuals were allegedly intent on committing acts of terrorism against their own country and their own people," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a statement. "As we have said ...

Bush is telling Iranians that they have no choice. Either they comply and do what Bush demands, or they will be attacked.

How Bush Brewed the Iranian Crisis Paul Craig Roberts Why did the Bush regime create a crisis over Iran? The answer is that the Bush regime is desperate to widen the war in the Middle East. What has Iran done? Unlike Israel, Pakistan and India, countries that developed nuclear weapons on the sly, Iran signed the nonproliferation treaty. Countries that sign this treaty have the right to develop nuclear energy. The International Atomic Energy Agency monitors their energy programs to guard against their being used to cloak weapons development. Until the Bush regime provoked a crisis, Iran was cooperating with the inspection safeguards. The weapons inspectors have found no Iranian weapons ...

Terror Close To home in Venezuela, a volatile leader befriends Mideast, Clumbia and Cuba

The oil-rich but politically unstable nation of Venezuela is emerging as a potential hub of terrorism in the Western Hemisphere, providing assistance to Islamic radicals from the Middle East and other terrorists, say senior U.S. military and intelligence officials. Bush administration aides see this as an unpredictably dangerous mix and are gathering more information about the intentions of a country that sits 1,000 miles south of Florida. One thing that's clear is that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is fast becoming America's newest nemesis, U.S. officials say. He has forged close ties with Cuba's Fidel Castro and has befriended some of America's other notorious enemies, traveling ...

Writing in that fateful year, 1939, T.S. Eliot, intellectual and Christian, admonished his contemporaries who had placed their faith in the triumph of democracy. Democracy is not enough, Eliot wrote. ''As political philosophy derives its sanction from ethics, and ethics from the truth of religion, it is only by returning to the eternal source of truth that we can hope for any social organization which will not, to its ultimate destruction, ignore some essential aspect of reality. ''The term 'democracy,' as I have said again and again, does not contain enough positive content to stand alone against the forces you dislike – it can easily be transformed by them. If you will not have God ...

Thousands demonstrate against US in Somalia MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Mogadishu on Friday angrily condemning the United States for supporting warlords involved in clashes with Islamic militias that claimed 16 more lives overnight. "America is responsible for the death of our children and the elderly," Sheikh Nur Barud, a respected cleric in Mogadishu, told the crowd chanting anti-American slogans. Hints of Oil Bonanzas Beneath Arctic Ocean

The studies on Arctic sediment that appear today in the journal Nature tell a dramatic story of polar warming and cooling over millions of years. But what they tell petroleum geologists may be just as striking. Skip to next paragraph Related Studies Portray Tropical Arctic in Distant Past (June 1, 2006) Under All That Ice, Maybe Oil (November 30, 2004) Though there is little mention of it in the papers, some scientists involved in the work said the huge amounts of organic material from dead algae and plants embedded in the ancient sedimentary layers suggested that the center of the Arctic Ocean could hold vast oil deposits. Paulson Pick Goes From Bad to Worse A few things to add to my earlier report on the nomination of Henry M. Paulson Jr. to replace John Snow as Treasury secretary. Let me preface this post by noting that what you read here is depressing. At a time when the Bush Administration desperately needs to salvage its standing with conservatives, it has had another Harriet Miers moment. 1. The Center for Responsive Politics has released its own evaluation of Paulson’s giving. And with all of its tools at its disposal, Massie Ritsch and Neil Tambe have done a good job painting a picture of Hank Paulson and his wife’s giving. VIENNA, Austria - Six world powers agreed Thursday to offer Iran a new choice of rewards if it gives up suspect nuclear activities or punishment if it refuses, a gambit that could either defuse a global confrontation with the Islamic regime or hasten one. "There are two paths ahead," British Foreign Secretary Margaret Becket said in announcing agreement among the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China on a package deal for Iran that carries the threat of United Nations sanctions. The package would be on the table for a proposed new round of bargaining with Tehran over what the West calls a rogue nuclear program that could produce a bomb. The U.S., in a major ...

A still from the video footage obtained by the BBC The pictures came from a hardline Sunni group The BBC has uncovered new video evidence that US forces may have been responsible for the deliberate killing of 11 innocent Iraqi civilians. The video appears to challenge the US military's account of events that took place in the town of Ishaqi in March. The US said at the time four people died during a military operation, but Iraqi police claimed that US troops had deliberately shot the 11 people. A spokesman for US forces in Iraq told the BBC an inquiry was under way. The new evidence comes in the wake of the alleged massacre in Haditha, where US marines are suspected of massacring up to ...

SINGAPORE (AP)—The Asia-Pacific rim is rumbling. While earthquakes are common and even expected along the belt that circles the Pacific Ocean, the Asian side of the rim has been struck particularly hard in the last 18 months by strong seismic activity. In December 2004, an undersea quake triggered the tsunami that killed 131,000 people. Last October, Pakistan was struck by a 7.6-magnitude quake that killed 80,000 people. Numerous smaller temblors rocked the rim until Saturday, when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake hit central Indonesia, causing nearly 4,000 deaths in the same area that has been bracing for a possible full-scale volcanic eruption. A day later, two powerful earthquakes ...

Russian defense minister Sergei Ivanov Friday reiterated Moscow’s commitment to supply Iran with sophisticated anti-aircraft missiles, Interfax news agency reported. “If there are no extraordinary circumstances, it (the contract) will without doubt be fulfilled,” Ivanov was quoted as saying. Defense Ministry officials have previously said Moscow would supply 29 sophisticated Tor-M1 air defense missile systems to Iran under a ˆ546.5m contract, according to Russian media reports. The move was likely to upset the United States, which last month called on all countries to stop all arms exports to Iran and to end all nuclear cooperation with it to put pressure on Tehran ...

WASHINGTON - The fallout from the killing of as many as two dozen Iraqi civilians by Marines could undermine U.S. efforts in Iraq more than the Abu Ghraib prison scandal did, a lawmaker who is a prominent war critic said Sunday. The shootings last November at Haditha, a city in the Anbar province of western Iraq that has been plagued by insurgents, were covered up, said Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record), D-Pa. "Who covered it up, why did they cover it up, why did they wait so long?" Murtha said on "This Week" on ABC. "We don't know how far it goes. It goes right up the chain of command." A bomb rocked a military convoy on Nov. 19, killing a ...

Babies with club feet aborted

MORE than 20 babies have been aborted in advanced pregnancy because scans showed that they had club feet, a deformity readily corrected by surgery or physiotherapy. According to figures from the Office for National Statistics covering the years from 1996 to 2004, a further four babies were aborted because they had webbed fingers or extra digits, which are also corrected by simple surgery. All the terminations took place late in pregnancy, after 20 weeks. Last year, according to campaigners, a healthy baby was aborted in the sixth month at a hospital in southeast England after ultrasound images indicated part of its foot was missing. News of the terminations has reignited the debate over ...
