A 2022 wildfire in California that many were quick to blame on so-called climate change has been ruled an act of arson, and a suspect has been arrested. The Oak Fire, which destroyed over 120 homes in Mariposa County, California, in 2022, is being blamed on Edward Fredrick Wackerman, a former firefighter and a Democratic donor. Wackerman faces several felony counts, including aggravated arson, arson that causes great bodily injury, and arson causing damage or destruction of inhabited structures. Over 19,000 acres were burned in the East Central California county, which includes a portion of Yosemite National Park. Click for Full Text!

Ariel Maguire gathered together with other moms in her rural area of the Big Island of Hawaii to create a child-centered educational solution for local families. It was late 2021 and the parents realized that nearly two years of pandemic policies had left their kids behind both academically and socially. There werent a lot of child care or early-education options nearby. The closest place to send our kids would be a little over an hour drive each way and it has a huge waitlist, Maguire told me in a recent podcast interview. We were all struggling because wed been stuck at home with our kids without community for a couple of years and needed to get back to ...
Nigeria Looks To Reduce State Role in Energy Sector Post Date: 2023-06-21 21:53:05 by Charles_Byrd

Nigeria's new government may reform the country's energy sector to limit the state's role in the production and sale of oil and gas. According to Reuters, advisers to newly-elected Nigerian President Bola Tinubu recommended that the government reduce its stake in the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to a minority position in order to raise $17 billion in revenue. The plan also proposes unifying Nigeria's multiple energy regulators into a single body, noting that "governance and regulatory concerns have eroded investor confidence, diverting private capital needed for the development of critical oil and gas infrastructure." Study Blames Regulation for Lower Rates of Innovation Post Date: 2023-06-21 21:51:09 by Charles_Byrd

Economists have long linked higher levels of regulation with less innovation, and a soon-to-be-published study of French firms provides additional evidence to support what is now conventional wisdom. The study, a 2021 working paper that will soon be published in the American Economic Review, was conducted by economists Philippe Aghion and John Van Reenen of the London School of Economics and Antonin Bergeaud of HEC Paris. They used data from the French tax authorities from 1994 to 2007 to determine if regulation affects "the pace and nature of innovation" in firms "and if so, by how much?" Click for Full Text!

Donald Trump's infamous Access Hollywood tape, key to last month's E. Jean Carroll defamation verdict, now plays a starring role in the former president's Manhattan hush-money case, a new prosecution filing shows. Prosecutors say the tape "features prominently" in their case, which alleges that Trump falsified business documents to hide a $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels. Click for Full Text!

Recreational marijuana isn't legal yet in Pennsylvania. That hasn't stopped Philadelphia politicians from trying to future-proof their zoning ordinances to block recreational sales. Philadelphia Councilmembers Brian O'Neill and Curtis Jones have proposed amendments to the city's zoning code that would preemptively prohibit existing medical marijuana businesses in two overlay districts they represent from participating in recreational sales. Brendan O'Neill: A Heretic's Manifesto Post Date: 2023-06-21 21:44:47 by Charles_Byrd

My guest today is Brendan O'Neill of Spiked, whose new collection of essays, A Heretic's Manifesto: Essays on the Unsayable covers heated topics such as attacks on J.K. Rowling by trans activists; dismissals of populist moments that gave rise to Brexit, Donald Trump, and Emmanuel Macron; and the refusal by elites to own up to their mistakes related to COVID lockdowns. I blurbed this provocative and irresistibly readable book, writing that "Brendan O'Neill is the reincarnation of Christopher Hitchens, a devil's advocate who is willing to always state his case clearly, convincingly, and courageously." Why Are Scientists Boasting of Creating ‘Synthetic Human Embryos’? Post Date: 2023-06-21 18:51:05 by Charles_Byrd

A scientist working in Cambridge and California has just announced that she and her colleagues have made a synthetic human embryo. They took a human embryonic stem cell line and used it to make what looks like an early human embryo. This synthetic human embryo has been cultivated past the legal limit for experimenting on human embryos in the United Kingdom, which is 14 days. If this really is an embryo, and it looks a bit like one, then this is a new way of generating an embryo without fertilisation. If cells from an adult could be used, then synthetic embryos would be a new form of cloning. This would be wrong for all the same reasons that the old way of cloning a ...

The search continues for exploration company OceanGate's Titan submarine and its five crewmembers, who went missing Sunday afternoon during a dive down to the Titanic wreckage in the North Atlantic. Back on land, the commentariat is taking no shortage of joy in their misfortune, pointing to a long list of statements from OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush (who is on the Titan craft) about prioritizing innovation over the safety concerns expressed by former employees and other marine industry professionals. The IMF Is Working on Global Central Bank Digital Currency Platform Post Date: 2023-06-21 18:46:29 by Charles_Byrd

The (apparent) advent of central digital currencies (CBDCs) in various countries around the world might be the once-in-a-lifetime chance for the International Monetary Fund (IFM) to move from influencing individuals lives and sometimes all but financially controlling their governments and economies to doing it much more directly. In other words, the CBDCs are the one bandwagon that nobody should have expected the IMF to miss jumping on and as the news now shows, the organizations is working on a global platform to help bolster the agenda of centralized, centrally-controlled digital money thats severely criticized by privacy, ...

Named for Juno, the Roman goddess of women, marriage, and childbirth, June remains one of the most popular months for weddings. Its temperate climate also wins accolades, as from poet James Russell Lowell: And what is so rare as a day in June? / Then, if ever, come perfect days. In our present age, June is also that month-long observance in celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. With its rainbows and flags, parades and festivals, extensive media coverage, and sundry politicians, celebrities, and cultural gurus urging one and all to participate, Pride Month is here. It’s Not Just the FBI: The IRS goes into ‘Beast Mode’ Post Date: 2023-06-20 16:28:28 by Charles_Byrd

We have seen for some time how off-the-rails the FBI has become, a danger to a free society. More and more evidence now shows its not just the FBI. Every federal employee with a badge and gun seems to think hes a law unto himself. This week the spotlight is on the IRS, and the Congress has to step up and rein the agency in. While Matt Taibbi was testifying before Congress on the administrations extensive censoring of social media content, the IRS appeared at his door, ostensibly to question him about his taxes, but obviously to intimidate him for showing up government censorship. De-dollarization could happen much quicker than most people think, Michael Goddard, president of the Netley Group, said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPEIF). SPIEF 2023 entered day two on Thursday, and the unique global economic and business event focused on de-dollarization a buzzword of late among countries seeking to ditch the hegemony of the American greenback. The BRICS group of countries has been spearheading the movement. A common currency is one of the bold steps being mulled over among other tools that the bloc, which unites the worlds largest developing economies Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has at its disposal to ...

Are you deeply struggling right now? If so, I want you to know that you are not alone. The things that I am about to share with you are not meant to be depressing. Rather, I hope that you will be encouraged to see that there are countless others in the exact same boat. Over the past few years, the cost of living has been rising much faster than paychecks have, and this has put enormous financial pressure on millions of American families. In some cases, families are dealing with extreme financial stress even though both parents are working good jobs. Virtually everything has become substantially more expensive, and so our money is not going nearly as far as it once did. Unfortunately, the ...

The Perils of Modern Feminism Post Date: 2023-06-20 16:10:11 by Charles_Byrd

Perhaps no -ism has harmed our society more grievously than feminism since it got hijacked in the late 1960s by radical secular leftists like Gloria Steinem who popularized Irina Dunns declaration that A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle. The original feminist goal of achieving equal rights for women was reached in the 1970s, and American women are the planets most powerful and free: legally, educationally, economically, and politically and this is a wonderful achievement. Daniel Ellsberg was one of history’s most consequential figures Post Date: 2023-06-20 16:06:44 by Charles_Byrd

In All the Presidents Men, the classic film on the downfall of President Richard Nixon, the name Daniel Ellsberg is not uttered once. And what a shame that is. Because for all the journalistic heroics of Woodward and Bernstein, its possible that there was no one more responsible for the only resignation of a president in American history than Daniel Ellsberg. Ellsberg, the legendary Pentagon Papers whistleblower, passionate anti- nuclear activist and staunch press freedom advocate, passed away at the age of 92 on Friday. History should remember him as one of the 20th centurys most consequential figures. But we should also be reminded that his own story is also ...

Barr says Trump is a 'troubled man' who lied to the Justice Department and deserves to be prosecuted Post Date: 2023-06-19 18:01:16 by Charles_Byrd

Up until the 2020 election, former Attorney General William Barr was seen as the epitome of a Republican loyalist, one who "distorted" the findings of Robert Mueller's Russia probe, in the words of one federal judge, and who spent the lead-up to the presidential vote casting doubt on the integrity of mail-in ballots. But in an appearance Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," Barr who rejected former President Donald Trump's false claims of voter fraud before resigning from office in December 2020 accused his former boss and the Republican frontrunner of being a "consummate narcissist" and a "troubled man" who deserves to be ...

The Justice Departments massive and complex legal case against Donald Trump is likely to dog the former president well into the 2024 presidential contest. The thorny issues raised in the classified documents battle, combined with Trumps penchant for aggressively challenging suits, suggests a long-term fight that may not even end before Election Day next year.
