A very confused and distressed young man wandered into our home on Sunday and began acting erratically. He was clearly suffering from a severe mental illness, probably schizophrenia, and from his nice clothes yet disheveled appearance Im guessing he had a home somewhere but had been on the street for a few days. My husband Tim began talking to him and trying to figure out how to help him, but when Tim tried walking with him outside the man slammed the door on him and started raving about recruiters and saying Tim was a pedophile. In Vladivostok, the Russian Far East Rises Post Date: 2023-09-20 21:54:31 by Charles_Byrd

Russian President Vladimir Putin opened and closed his quite detailed address to the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok with a resounding message: The Far East is Russias strategic priority for the entire 21st century. And thats exactly the feeling one would have prior to the address, interacting with business executives mingling across the stunning forum grounds at the Far Eastern Federal University (opened only 11 years ago), with the backdrop of the more than four kilometer-long suspension bridge to Russky Island across the Eastern Bosphorus strait. To Antitrust Enforcers, Consumers Are Irrelevant Post Date: 2023-09-20 21:52:59 by Charles_Byrd

Is antitrust enforcement good per se, no matter what its effect on consumers? Reading an August 26 New York Times editorial, one could easily conclude that the Times editors think so. Indeed, the content of the editorial is in tension with the editorials title. The title is Americans Pay a Price for Corporate Consolidation. You might think on that basis that the editors would point out how consolidation of corporations would create market power, causing consumers to pay higher prices. But you would be wrong. The editors explicitly reject the idea of judging mergers by their effects on consumers. There are powerful forces arrayed on their side, specifically the head of the ...

A fairly ordinary parking lot in Japans Nara prefecture has revealed the Kofun tomb of an elite person from the ancient era, accidentally uncovered as the area was being cleared to prepare it for shrubbery. The area near the renowned Horyuji temple, under excavation since spring 2022, led to the unearthing of various artifacts, removed from centuries of soil buildup within the stone burial chamber two iron swords, arrowheads, equestrian-related items, exquisite amber jewelry, and clay pots. The commercial healthcare industry is heavily regulated by the government and has many serious flaws pertaining to medical costs and coverage. Christian health cost sharing has emerged as an alternative for Americans seeking a healthcare support system that is aligned with their beliefs and is devoid of governmental intervention, as it should be. In this interview with The New American, Katy Talento, an Executive Director of the Alliance of Health Care Sharing Ministries, explains the differences between commercial insurance and Christian health cost sharing. Members and the leadership of Health Care Sharing Ministries work together to freely determine what type of medical expenses its ...
Biden, the 'Most Pro-Union President,' Reaps What He Sows Post Date: 2023-09-20 20:56:08 by Charles_Byrd

Labor unions are having a moment. That moment features wins for the Teamsters against UPS, unionized pilots against airlines, a movie industry strike, and a historic strike against the Big Three carmakers. This is massive news for the self-described "most pro-union president" but more for its awkwardness than for the resurgence of organized labor. The strikes are partially motivated by inflation under the Biden administration, auto workers worry about the destruction of jobs threatened by the White House's push for electric vehicles, labor actions threaten the Democratic Party's gains with corporate America, and the president finds himself vying for union support ...

Everybody knows Ron Pauls heroic battle against the Fed. The Fed is at the center of all of the plots of the deep state to destroy us. Without its financial empire of fiat money, the deep state would not be able to function. But do you know how the slogan, End the Fed, forever associated with Dr. Paul, became popular? After Dr. Paul spoke to a student group at the University of Michigan, the audience was so charged up that a number of them took out Federal Reserve notes from their wallets and burned them. The demonstration attracted quite a bit of attention at the time. After that the slogan took off. Everybody was saying End the Fed! Dr. Paul gave a succinct ...
5 Ways America Can Pursue a 'Pro-Worker' Agenda Post Date: 2023-09-20 20:05:57 by Charles_Byrd

I was born in the Soviet Union, sometimes associated as a worker power paradise, where all aspects of work were regulated under the principle that every Soviet citizen must have a good, meaningful job that pays decent wages. Loosely, that meant a job was guaranteed by the government, there were rigid pay standards for each profession, it was impossible to get fired (which inevitably meant there was less job mobility), and the pursuit of income from self-employment was strictly prohibited. This latter prohibition on work is what sent my grandfather to jail for nearly a decade when he tried to earn more income by making and selling hats. Three decades later, and several thousand ...

There already are some alarming indications the Deep State in the federal government intervened to provide protection for Hunter Biden from tax and gun charges, including a failed sweetheart deal that prosecutors had proposed a few weeks ago. Stories to Watch: Unsustainable Fiscal Policy Post Date: 2023-09-19 18:45:46 by Charles_Byrd

Maybe countries can live with todays high debt ratios, and maybe they cannot. The problem, which the authors mention briefly but do not address, is that in the absence of significant policy changes, the outlookat least in the U.S.is for debt to rise exponentially, because of demographics. The ratio of elderly dependents to working-age people just keeps heading higher, and health care spending just keeps rising faster than inflation. Can inflation itself cure the debt problem by enabling the government to pay back debt in cheaper dollars? Arslanap and Eichengreen say that the consensus from many studies is not favorable. In an interview with Russian news agency RIA Novosti published on September 17, Russian ambassador-at-large Nikolay Korchunov decried increasing hostilities in the Arctic due to what he labeled as the destructive policies of the United States and its allies, declaring that NATOs military enlargement in the Arctic jeopardizes regional security and thus warrants countermeasures from Russia. The senior Russian Foreign Ministry official added that NATOs move to welcome Finland which has already joined the bloc as full-fledged member and Sweden demonstrated that NATO backed forceful scenarios to increase its own security in the North at the expense of the ...
Playing with Official Inflation Statistics: An Example from Germany Post Date: 2023-09-19 18:35:57 by Charles_Byrd

The Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) consists of 12 subindices, which are weighted according to their shares in total household expenditures. If, for example, food and non-alcoholic beverages (subindex 1) account for 15% of expenditures, they should also be given a weight of 15% in the overall index. In this way, each expenditure category would be given the importance it has for an average household. This is the claim of official statistics. But here, too, as so often, aspiration and reality diverge. In Germany, the traditionally largest subindex covers housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (subindex 4). It has always accounted for more than 21% of the overall index ...
