House Vote on FOSTA is a Win for Censorship (LF shutdown by GOP Leadership?)

The bill passed today 388-25 by the U.S. House of Representatives marks an unprecedented push towards Internet censorship, and does nothing to fight sex traffickers. H.R. 1865, the Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA), allows for private lawsuits and criminal prosecutions against Internet platforms and websites, based on the actions of their users. Facing huge new liabilities, the law will undoubtedly lead to platforms policing more user speech. The Internet we know today is possible only because of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which prevents online platforms from being held liable for their users’ speech, except in certain ...

Ohio Governor John Kasich speaks during the 2017 Ellis Island Medals of Honor ceremony at the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO) meeting on May 13, 2017 in New York. (Photo by AFP) The Governor of the US state of Ohio John Kasich says the two-party system that has dominated US politics for over a century might be nearing its end. “We may be beginning to see the end of a two-party system,” Kasich, a Republican, told ABC News on Sunday. "I'm starting to really wonder if we are going to see a multiparty system at some point in the future in this country because I don't think either party is answering people's deepest concerns and needs.” The ...

The Trump Presidency: A Repeat Of G.W. Bush?

The Republican Party claims to be “pro-life” and “the party of smaller government.” President Donald Trump claims to be “pro-life” and for “smaller government.” It’s all a pack of lies. With the Republicans in total control of both houses of Congress and the White House, they voted for—and Trump quickly signed—the biggest spending bill in U.S. history. The bill, which was co-authored by Senator Chuck Schumer (D-New York) and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), explodes the federal deficit by over $400 billion, and, get this: it fully funds America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood. After he signed this fiscally ...

Republicans repeal the Tea Party

The Tea Party had one tangible achievement to show for all of the havoc it caused: The enactment of spending caps that resulted from the 2011 standoff over raising the debt ceiling. Those caps are now under threat. (AP Photo/Andy Manis) During the Obama era, Republicans campaigned on promises to restrain federal spending and repeal Obamacare. Having gained total control of Washington, they have chosen to repeal the Tea Party instead. The Tea Party meant a lot of things to a lot of different people, but for many limited government conservatives, the movement’s energy brought a new hope of counteracting the inertia that has traditionally led both parties to expand the size and scope of ...

...NBC analyst Tony Dungy...has come under fire [by anti-Christian fascists] for stating Nick Foles would “play well because his Christian faith would allow him to play with confidence” before the understudy quarterback led Eagles to victory. Dungy, a Hall of Fame member and former Bucs and Colts head coach, spoke on air during the game about the faith of Foles, who has said he wants to be a pastor for high school students after his career concludes. Himself an outspoken Christian, Dungy spent much of Tuesday responding to Twitter critics [aka anti-Christian bigots] who don’t see how Foles’ religious beliefs helped him defeat the Patriots. “NBC pays me to express ...

In the US Senate’s appalling vote, 14 Catholic lawmakers- all Democrats- blocked a bid to make late-term abortions illegal. Father Dwight Longenecker asks the right question: “What kind of Catholic Church are we if their pastors and bishops do not stand up publicly and rebuke these fourteen politicians?” In case one of those Catholic politicians is your representative, and in case you’d like to encourage your pastors and bishops in the right direction, here’s the list: · Maria Cantwell —Washington · Susan Collins -Maine · Dick Durbin —Illinois · Kirsten Gillibrand —New York · Heidi Heitkamp —North Dakota ...

CARDINAL HOPES GAY MASSES CAN BE ROLLED OUT THROUGHOUT CHURCH

A Westminster diocesan initiative to extend a special welcome to lesbian and gay Catholics at a regular Mass has proved so successful that Cardinal Vincent Nichols would like it to be rolled out nationwide, his lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) liaison priest has said. The Masses, at the Jesuit Farm Street Church in central London, replaced the more controversial, so-called “gay Masses” that were designated for LGBT Catholics at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Soho until 2013. Key to the transition was that the Farm Street Masses are an extension of the diocese’s pastoral care for gay people. LGBT Catholics join the regular congregation at the 6.15 p.m. ...

While the Vatican vacillates over whether to welcome gays into the church, the new kids in the flock seem to have no qualms about the subject. Close to 85% of self-identified Catholics between the ages of 18 and 29 believe gays and lesbians should be accepted by society, according to a 2014 survey conducted by the Pew Research Center. These younger Catholics are also supportive of legalizing same-sex marriages, with 75% throwing their weight behind the concept. The positive attitudes toward homosexuality are less likely to be found among older adults. About 57% of Catholics aged 65 and older told Pew that they believe homosexuality should be accepted.

"These are people in the Roman Catholic Church who need our care and love," Deacon Robert Pallotti, director of the Office of the Diaconate, told the Hartford TV station. "In some cases, they have been rejected by society. They need to be accepted, affirmed and supported as Roman Catholics trying to remain faithful to church teachings." How the Catholic Priesthood Became an Unlikely Haven for Many Gay Men

Back in March, Pope Francis sparked a wave of headlines when he hinted at the possibility of ordaining married men as priests. Since there’s no evidence that church practice will actually change, reactions to Francis’ comments were premature. But the speculators ignored one interesting point: Opening the priesthood to married men would probably reduce the high percentage of priests who are gay. While doing research for my book The Sex Effect, I came across many scholars who suggested that preventing priests from marrying altered the makeup of the priesthood over time, unintentionally providing a shelter for some devout gay men to hide their sexual orientation. By continuing to ...

NEWARK — The word “pilgrimage” usually evokes visions of far-off, exotic places, but for some 100 gay and lesbian Catholics and their families, a pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart here on a recent Sunday was more like a homecoming. The doors to the cathedral were opened to them, and they were welcomed personally by the leader of the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin. They were seated on folding chairs at the cathedral’s center, in front of the altar in the towering sanctuary, under the blue-tinted glow of stained glass. “I am Joseph, your brother,” Cardinal Tobin told the group, which included lesbian, gay, bisexual and ...

MILWAUKEE — A Roman Catholic priest came out to his parishioners Sunday and to the rest of the world Monday in a first-person column in National Catholic Reporter. The Rev. Gregory Greiten of St. Bernadette Catholic church here said he was breaking the silence of gay men in the clergy so he could reclaim his own voice. "I am Greg. I am a Roman Catholic priest. And, yes, I am gay!" he told worshipers Sunday. He received a standing ovation. While gay men do serve as priests, rarely does priest to come out to his parishioners in this way. In his column, Greiten shares an estimate from The Changing Face of the Priesthood of 8,554 and 21,571 gay Catholic priests in the United ...

Staunchly Catholic Malta only introduced divorce following a referendum in 2011, to the dismay of many in authority. Six years later, it ranks top in Europe for gay rights, it was the first country to ban gay conversion therapy - and it's about to legalise same-sex marriage. "Malta wants to keep leading on LGBT issues and civil liberties, to serve as a model for the rest of the world," Prime Minister Joseph Muscat told the BBC. Fresh from a resounding electoral victory, Mr Muscat put forward the Marriage Equality Bill as the first law to be discussed in parliament.

This was the first time that the bishop had spoken in front of the advocacy group, which supports lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Catholics. "New Ways Ministry made me want to come here," the bishop told NCR during a 40-minute interview at the gathering. He has been observing and admiring the group's outreach to LGBT Catholics over several years, he added. LOS ANGELES, California, July 12, 2016 (JosephSciambra) — The real-life experiences of a Catholic mother with a “gay” daughter: When my oldest daughter was a teenager she had her first same sex relationship. We may have special needs, addictions, or mental illness. We may be, in mourning, joyful or lonely, young or old, shy, or outgoing. We may be homeless, perhaps physically or spiritually. God’s love is for everyone. The Church welcomes us all and is better when we all come to Mass – as we are, as God made us. We have been reminded by Pope Francis to go out into the world to bring God’s love and welcome to everyone.
