Police departments are often forced to rehire bad officers because of union contracts

The Washington Post has an interesting story today about how police departments around the country are often forced to rehire police officers who have been fired for misbehavior thanks to union contract rules. Since there is no central database of information on police firings, the Post sent records requests to the 55 largest police departments in the country. Thirty-seven departments responded to the requests. Since 2006, those 37 departments had fired 1,881 officers. But in 451 cases, 24% of the time, the departments were later forced to rehire those same officers. From the Post: Most of the officers regained their jobs when police chiefs were overruled by arbitrators, typically lawyers ...

Alien Gear Holsters made a post to their Facebook page Thursday morning which was critical of the officer-involved shooting of Antoquan Watson, suggesting that officers shouldn’t have shot him so many times. Antoquan Watson was high on PCP when he opened fire on officers during a vehicle pursuit and then exited his vehicle and started shooting at officers. In the post to Facebook, Alien Gear Holsters said: “A reasonable and prudent person follows a police officer’s orders; Angry people sometimes show reluctance, but is it ever okay to shoot someone 45 times?” After getting hammered with criticism for almost 2 hours from pissed-off customers, Alien Gear Holsters ...

Connecticut Just Banned Civil Forfeiture Without A Criminal Conviction

Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy signed HB 7146 on Monday, which curbs the state’s civil forfeiture laws. Not only did the bill earn endorsements from the Yankee Institute for the Public Policy and the state chapter of the ACLU, HB 7146 even passed both the House and the Senate without a single no vote. Under the new law, in order to permanently confiscate property with civil forfeiture, the property must be first seized in connection to either a lawful arrest or a lawful search that results in an arrest. If prosecutors do not secure a guilty verdict, a plea bargain or a dismissal from finishing a pretrial diversion program, the government must return the property to its rightful ...

AP Photo/Russell Contreras, File The legalization of marijuana in Washington state and Colorado had at least one unanticipated effect on the streets: a sharp decline in the number of traffic stops resulting in searches by state police, a new analysis shows. The drop means fewer interactions between police and drivers, potentially limiting dangerous clashes. But even though the number of searches fell significantly for all racial groups, black and Hispanic drivers are still searched at higher rates than white motorists, the analysis found. Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting in partnership with The Marshall Project reviewed stop and searches conducted by Washington and ...

A Florida man spent 90 days in jail after police officers who stopped him for driving without headlights said white powder found in his car was cocaine. But Karlos Cashe walked out of jail last week after lab results determined the powder in the handyman’s car was actually drywall. Cashe tells WFTV he repeatedly told officers in Oviedo the substance was drywall. But after running a check they found he was on probation for marijuana and cocaine charges in 2015. Cashe says a K-9 alerted on his vehicle and an officer’s field test was positive for cocaine. Court records show he was denied bond because he was accused of violating probation. It took nearly three months for lab test ...

Minnesota police officer who was charged with manslaughter after he shot a black motorist five times during a traffic stop last year was found not guilty by a jury on Friday, according to multiple reports. Defense attorneys said Jeronimo Yanez, the 29-year-old Latino police officer, was scared for his life when he shot Philando Castile, 32, seconds after Castile informed the officer he was armed. Prosecutors insisted Yanez never saw the gun and had plenty of options other than shooting Castile, who was an elementary school cafeteria worker. The officer was also acquitted of two counts of discharging a firearm that endangers safety, according to CNN, which reported that several members of ...

John blogged this NYT story last night about Comey trying to gently discipline Trump about what is and isn’t appropriate to say to the director of the FBI about pending investigations. But he left out the funniest detail, about a gathering at the White House a few days after the inauguration that Comey didn’t want to attend because he feared Trump would try to act too chummy with him. That would be bad optics for the FBI under any circumstances but really bad optics with Democrats howling that Comey had helped Trump win the election. How could he get the president not to notice him when they’d be in the same room, though? He hit upon an idea: The ceremony [on January 22nd] ...

Maddie designed a yard sign supporting police officers — “We Support Our Local Law Enforcement” — and then she started spreading the word. She thought she would sell 100 signs, but the demand was twice that, and then a second order for another 200 signs came in. Three recent gems of underreported “good news” show that pro-cop sentiment does exist in American citizens, and you can see it plainly if you look hard enough. The anti-police sentiment which now pervades our public discourse — particularly in mainstream national press and on social media — is not an accurate reflection of how the majority of Americans feel about their law enforcement officers. I am of the opinion that the overwhelming majority of Americans appreciate and admire their police officers. However, I think they’re a silent majority. Most law-abiding citizens proceed with their daily lives without even thinking about their police. People are more prone ...
