Police departments are often forced to rehire bad officers because of union contracts
Post Date: 2017-08-03 18:53:19 by Tooconservative
The Washington Post has an interesting story today about how police departments around the country are often forced to rehire police officers who have been fired for misbehavior thanks to union contract rules. Since there is no central database of information on police firings, the Post sent records requests to the 55 largest police departments in the country. Thirty-seven departments responded to the requests. Since 2006, those 37 departments had fired 1,881 officers. But in 451 cases, 24% of the time, the departments were later forced to rehire those same officers. From the Post: Most of the officers regained their jobs when police chiefs were overruled by arbitrators, typically lawyers ...

Connecticut Just Banned Civil Forfeiture Without A Criminal Conviction
Post Date: 2017-07-15 06:50:53 by Tooconservative
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy signed HB 7146 on Monday, which curbs the states civil forfeiture laws. Not only did the bill earn endorsements from the Yankee Institute for the Public Policy and the state chapter of the ACLU, HB 7146 even passed both the House and the Senate without a single no vote. Under the new law, in order to permanently confiscate property with civil forfeiture, the property must be first seized in connection to either a lawful arrest or a lawful search that results in an arrest. If prosecutors do not secure a guilty verdict, a plea bargain or a dismissal from finishing a pretrial diversion program, the government must return the property to its rightful ...

Police are searching far fewer cars in states that have legalized marijuana
Post Date: 2017-06-29 20:32:05 by Hondo68
AP Photo/Russell Contreras, File The legalization of marijuana in Washington state and Colorado had at least one unanticipated effect on the streets: a sharp decline in the number of traffic stops resulting in searches by state police, a new analysis shows. The drop means fewer interactions between police and drivers, potentially limiting dangerous clashes. But even though the number of searches fell significantly for all racial groups, black and Hispanic drivers are still searched at higher rates than white motorists, the analysis found. Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting in partnership with The Marshall Project reviewed stop and searches conducted by Washington and ...

The Philando Castile shooting: Why was it reasonable for the cop to be nervous but not for Castile to be?

Minnesota police officer who was charged with manslaughter after he shot a black motorist five times during a traffic stop last year was found not guilty by a jury on Friday, according to multiple reports. Defense attorneys said Jeronimo Yanez, the 29-year-old Latino police officer, was scared for his life when he shot Philando Castile, 32, seconds after Castile informed the officer he was armed. The officer was also acquitted of two counts of discharging a firearm that endangers safety, according to CNN, which reported that several members of ...

Hilarious: Comey really did try to blend in with the drapes so that Trump wouldn’t notice him in January
Post Date: 2017-05-19 12:12:23 by Tooconservative
John blogged this NYT story last night about Comey trying to gently discipline Trump about what is and isnt appropriate to say to the director of the FBI about pending investigations. But he left out the funniest detail, about a gathering at the White House a few days after the inauguration that Comey didnt want to attend because he feared Trump would try to act too chummy with him. That would be bad optics for the FBI under any circumstances but really bad optics with Democrats howling that Comey had helped Trump win the election. How could he get the president not to notice him when theyd be in the same room, though? He hit upon an idea: The ceremony [on January 22nd] ...

3 inspiring stories of citizens supporting police
Post Date: 2017-05-10 12:36:27 by Gatlin
Three recent gems of underreported good news show that pro-cop sentiment does exist in American citizens, and you can see it plainly if you look hard enough. The anti-police sentiment which now pervades our public discourse particularly in mainstream national press and on social media is not an accurate reflection of how the majority of Americans feel about their law enforcement officers. I am of the opinion that the overwhelming majority of Americans appreciate and admire their police officers. However, I think theyre a silent majority. Most law-abiding citizens proceed with their daily lives without even thinking about their police. People are more prone ...
