Hillary Clinton acknowledges 1994 crime bill led to mass incarceration of minorities, tells Daily News editorial board the bill also did good things

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton told the Daily News editorial board that she wants to do more to "demilitarize the police," while admitting that the 1994 crime will was a mixed bag. Hillary Clinton on Saturday conceded her husband’s 1994 crime bill had the unintended consequence of mass incarceration. Speaking before the Daily News editorial board, Clinton said the bill did a lot of good things like adding more cops to the streets and creating a ban on assault weapons. ut she said it also led states to enact policies that resulted in more people, especially people of color, being imprisoned for nonviolent crimes. “That was not as apparent at the ...

Halting LGBT rules, N Carolina lawmakers again rebuff cities

The decision by the North Carolina legislature and Gov. Pat McCrory to overturn Charlotte's anti-discrimination ordinance for LGBT citizens isn't simply another skirmish in the decades-old culture war between conservatives and progressives. It's the latest muscle-flexing by leaders in Republican-controlled states to rebuff local governments - often large cities run by Democrats - implementing policies they disagree with or haven't sanctioned. "You see the most liberal city councils and mayors over-regulating," said North Carolina House Majority Leader Mike Hager, from small-town Rutherfordton. He added that the state can't become a patchwork of key commerce ...

So, as I noted, I made it to caucus today. It was…more eventful than expected. I took 2 pages of notes so I’ll try to tell you what happened to the best of my notes and memory. I shall also remind you of my biases, I went to Caucus today with 2 goals: 1) #neverTrump 2) some random platform amendments I’ll get to in a moment. Hostile Territory I settled into the caucus about 5-10 minutes early and took a seat behind two people engaged in quite the back and forth. One was clearly a Trump supporter. The other clearly #neverTrump but I was unclear of his opinions past that. When the #NeverTrump brought up Trump’s abuse of eminent domain (specifically decrying the use of it ...

Ted Cruz dominates Colorado GOP convention winning all 34 delegates [Full Thread]

COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado crowned Ted Cruz as the runaway winner in the state's Republican presidential contest Saturday — and moved the GOP closer to a contested national convention. The Texas senator won all 34 delegates awarded in Colorado in what amounts to a stunning rebuke of Republican front-runner Donald Trump. Cruz completed the sweep by winning all 13 delegates at the state convention in Colorado Springs — the largest in history with nearly 8,000 in the crowd — where he gave what amounted to an victory speech earlier in the day. "If it we continue to stand united," Cruz declared, "we are going to win this Republican nomination." ...

Poll: 66% of Trump supporters say they’d vote for the GOP nominee if Trump is denied at the convention

Reuters headlines its story about this poll, “Exclusive: Blocking Trump could hurt Republicans in election.” Which is accurate, although it’s just as accurate that nominating Trump could hurt Republicans by alienating #NeverTrumpers (as well as many, many, many swing voters). All of that is old news, though. Republicans have understood for months that some small but important chunk of the party is walking away after the convention no matter who the nominee is. The real takeaway here is just how many Trumpers say they’re willing to stick with the party this fall even if Trump gets shafted in Cleveland. I never would have guessed it’s as high as 66 percent. In fact, ...

Ted Cruz's Law Firm Backed Obama, Other National Democrat Campaigns

OBAMA, DEMOCRATS RECEIVED $750,000 IN DONATIONS SINCE HE JOINED AS PARTNER Texas Insider Report: AUSTIN, Texas — As interested observers, most Texans are probably trying to remain objective while watching the back-and-forth of political campaigns in the early stages of spring. Last week, however, the tactics by one of the campaigns for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate crossed the line from tough campaigning, into a realm of a behavior most will discern as unworthy of someone they’d want to have representing Texas. Ted Cruz is More Like Barack Obama Than Ronald Reagan

Ted Cruz’s supporters like to imagine the Texas senator as the re-incarnation of Ronald Reagan — but in reality, he is more like the second coming of Barack Obama. Cruz, who declared his candidacy for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination Monday, often invokes Reagan in his speeches and his supporters usually lecture Cruz’s conservative critics that Reagan, too, was disdained by the so-called “Republican establishment” before he was elected president. Perhaps all of Cruz’s right-of-center critics, myself included, fail to see the Reagan in their midst. Alternatively, perhaps Cruz isn’t very much like Reagan. Indeed, there is a strong case that Cruz ...

Senator Ted Cruz has at least eight Super-PAC’s assisting his presidential campaign; and according to a recording obtained by Politico a Cruz’s campaign bundler was directing large donors toward one PAC specifically. The “Stand for Truth” PAC. However, the campaign appears to have, yet again, gone into the land of illegality with the following statement (via audio recording): “If you hit your max then we have a table for you that is the unlimited table,” Keet Lewis, a bundler for the campaign and co-host of a Dec. 30 fundraiser in Dallas, says on the recording provided to POLITICO. “It can take corporate dollars, it can take partnership dollars, and ...

Trump’s getting trounced in Indiana

Indiana hasn’t cast its ballots for president yet, but Donald Trump is already losing. Republican Party insiders in the state will select 27 delegates to the national convention on Saturday, and Trump is assured to be nearly shut out of support, according to interviews with a dozen party leaders and officials involved in the delegate selection process. Anti-Trump sentiment runs hot among GOP leadership in Indiana, and it’s driving a virulent rejection of the mogul among likely delegates. “If Satan had the lead on him and was one delegate away from being nominated as our candidate, and Donald Trump was the alternative, I might vote for Donald Trump,” said Craig Dunn, a ...

I’ve heard a lot of predictions about the outcome of the GOP primary this week, but to say that there’s some sort of consensus forming would be a bit of an exaggeration to put it mildly. Echoing the sentiments of some of the guests on the cable news morning shows, Lawnewz said that Trump still wins the whole thing once he gets to wrangle for a few missing delegates coming into Cleveland. At the same time, Ted Cruz backer Scott Walker said that the Texas Senator is now set up to take it on the second ballot. And of course we have the clean slate predictions of those who still believe that the entire voting process will be tossed out the window and someone not even in the running ...

The Underestimated Mr. CruzIn the Texas senator, the GOP has an ideal candidate to stop Donald Trump On April 5, conservatives around the nation, beleaguered and bleary-eyed after months of Donald Trump’s rampaging through the 2016 presidential primary season, received some comforting news: Wisconsin Republicans had dealt Trump a decisive defeat in the state’s primary that day, awarding most of their delegates to his leading competitor, Texas senator Ted Cruz. If not for Cruz, Trump would inevitably be the nominee. Yet he’s a weak front-runner, having lost about a dozen contests to Cruz prior to the Wisconsin primary. (Although John Kasich remains in the race, he has, as yet, ...

[Arguments for Trump's Electability Are] Weak and Getting Weaker

Weak and Getting Weaker Of all the arguments against Donald Trump, the softest has been his poor prospects for victory in the general election. True, he has consistently polled worse against Hillary Clinton than have Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and virtually every other person who ran. But polls change. And if Trump were to win the Republican nomination, it would be such an earthquake that the political order might be transformed. Clinton, moreover, has huge vulnerabilities. She lacks many basic political skills, and she is a hostage to fortune—in both the usual way, as the heir to an incumbent president, and in the unusual one of being the subject of an FBI investigation. Yet the ...

It’s Paul Manafort, who’s now in charge of Trump’s new D.C. office and has taken over the all-important task of wrangling delegates for Trump at state conventions. If you don’t know why him reporting directly to Trump rather than to Lewandowski is significant, read this post for a primer on the power struggle behind the scenes. If you believe Politico, Lewandowski was so eager to defend his turf from Manafort that he fired Trump’s chief organizer in Colorado for defying his orders not to speak to Manafort. One thing I didn’t realize when I wrote that post: Not only are Manafort and Roger Stone pals, they were actually partners at their own lobbying firm for ...

How New York’s Voter Registration Law Is Going To Screw Donald Trump

One of the interesting things about this primary season is learning just how byzantine our party primaries are. I’ve posted twice now on the New York primary, relying upon the New York Board of Elections website as a source. That site sets a deadline of March 25 for voter registration. I had assumed (the old military expression of “when you assume you make an ‘ass’ of ‘you’ (u, get it?) and ‘me’ really applies) that applied to change of registration. My colleague, Moe Lane, pointed out, gently, that was balderdash. Via Think Progress: Devin Cannon’s voter registration has been marked “independent” for as long as she can remember. This ...

As cannabis legalization sweeps the nation, a small group of U.S. senators held a desperate anti-pot circus show this week where they displayed the absurdity of cannabis prohibition. The hearing was dubbed “Is the Department of Justice Adequately Protecting the Public From the Impact of State Recreational Marijuana Legalization?”Chuck Grassley and Dianne Feinstein, the two oldest members of the Senate, hosted the event and invited other prohibition crusaders such as Nebraska attorney general Doug Peterson, who attempted to sue Colorado for being a drug cartel. Sen. Jeff Sessions also attended and provided perhaps the most laughable statement of the hearing when he ...

AP-GfK Poll: Americans overwhelmingly view Trump negatively

WASHINGTON (AP) — For Americans of nearly every race, gender, political persuasion and location, disdain for Donald Trump runs deep, saddling the Republican front-runner with unprecedented unpopularity as he tries to overcome recent campaign setbacks. Seven in 10 people, including close to half of Republican voters, have an unfavorable view of Trump, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. It's an opinion shared by majorities of men and women; young and old; conservatives, moderates and liberals; and whites, Hispanics and blacks — a devastatingly broad indictment of the billionaire businessman. Even in the South, a region where Trump has won GOP primaries decisively, ...

These Penn. delegates could decide GOP nomination

One of the biggest blocs of delegates up for grabs in the coming weeks may not be tied to any candidate winning a primary or caucus. Pennsylvania could be of extraordinary importance in a contested Republican convention, given the way its delegates are allocated. While the state has 71 GOP delegates, only 17 will be handed out to the winner of the April 26 primary, with the remaining 54 delegate posts — three per congressional district — elected separately and unbound on the first ballot in July. "If the Republican convention turns out to be contested ... Pennsylvania would without a doubt be at the epicenter of every discussion, every phone call, every scenario, every ...

An interesting little aside from a Washington Times story about what Marco Rubio might be up to at the convention. Remember, Rubio’s taken the unusual step of requesting that the delegates he won in Alaska, Oklahoma, and Washington D.C. remain bound to him on the first ballot at the convention even though he quit the race weeks ago. That move is designed to prevent any of those delegates from becoming unbound free agents and being wooed by Team Trump, which will make it that much harder for Trump to find the votes he needs to get to 1,237 in Cleveland. Those delegates will become unbound on the second or third ballot, but everyone expects hundreds of Trump’s delegates to defect ...

Sabato: Trump Shifts Six Senate Races Toward Democrats
Post Date: 2016-04-07 17:44:45 by Tooconservative

The rise of Donald Trump and the general "polarization" of politics have pushed six Senate seats toward the Democrats, according to Larry Sabato and his "Crystal Ball" forecast. Sabato's updated forecast bodes particularly ill for Sens. Rob Portman and Pat Toomey, Republicans who are defending their turf in major purple states. Because there is a strong correlation between the success of a presidential candidate and Senate hopefuls of the same party, Sabato argues that the GOP could endanger itself if it nominates a general election candidate unpalatable to the general public. "Considering the rise of Donald Trump, the polarization in U.S. politics, and a ...

Trump’s New Magic Number Is 40 Percent Of The Vote

Donald Trump has 39 percent of the vote in our Pennsylvania polling average, 37 percent in California, and 39 percent in Maryland. If this were February or early March, that would leave him without much to worry about. Even if Trump picked up zero undecided voters, he’d be pretty much guaranteed a win with the rest of the vote divided between a half-dozen opponents. But those days are over. In Wisconsin on Tuesday, Trump had 35 percent of the vote — the same share that allowed him to win New Hampshire easily in February, and a larger percentage than he got in winning South Carolina. But not only did Trump fail to win Wisconsin — he got crushed by Ted Cruz. In many respects, ...
