What Libertarians Get Wrong About American History
Post Date: 2017-07-08 01:11:19 by Gatlin
22 Comments
American history is not an essentially libertarian story. Understanding history as best we can is important for obvious reasons. It’s particularly important for libertarians who want to persuade people to the freedom philosophy. In making their case for individual freedom, mutual aid, social cooperation, foreign nonintervention, and peace, libertarians commonly place great weight on historical examples most often drawn from the early United States. So if they misstate history or draw obviously wrong conclusions, they will discredit their case. Much depends therefore on getting history right. Libertarians naturally sense that their philosophy will be easier to sell to the public if ...

The Libertarian Delusion

The stubborn appeal of the libertarian idea persists, despite mountains of evidence that the free market is neither efficient, nor fair, nor free from periodic catastrophe. In an Adam Smith world, the interplay of supply and demand yields a price that signals producers what to make and investors where to put their capital. The more that government interferes with this sublime discipline, the more bureaucrats deflect the market from its true path. But in the world where we actually live, markets do not produce the “right” price. There are many small examples of this failure, but also three immense ones that should have discredited the libertarian premise by now. Global climate ...

The Big Idea - The End of the Libertarian Dream?

Long on the fringes of American politics, small-government conservatives were closer than ever to mainstream acceptance. Then two things happened: Donald Trump and Jihadi John. Justin Amash can’t seem to concentrate. His eyes keep drifting toward the TV behind me, mounted on the wall inside his congressional office. The 36-year-old representative from Michigan, who arrived in Washington six years ago as a self- described libertarian Republican, is rattling off a list of concerns about the newly inaugurated president, but he is distracted by C-SPAN’s programming: Mick Mulvaney, his close friend and colleague from South Carolina—and a similarly libertarian-minded ...

What Happened To Ron Paul Supporters In The Age Of Trump
Post Date: 2017-07-06 19:45:18 by Gatlin

To understand what is currently going on in the minds of Ron Paul enthusiasts in the age of President Donald Trump, we must first understand what Paul represented as both a congressman and a presidential candidate. We must also understand that, at the height of Paul’s popularity during the 2012 presidential campaign, Paul’s appeal was such that both tea party patriots and young, pot-smoking college students were able to come together to stand for the same candidate. By 2016, dissatisfaction with American politics had become the norm. As the tension built up, the explosive Trump campaign seemed to strike a vein with a great number of Americans by simply remaining on attack mode ...

Why I'm Not A Libertarian Anymore [Full Thread]

I am a former libertarian. I was exposed to libertarianism in high school, when I read The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, and We the Living. I admired the rugged individualism of (((Ayn Rand’s))) protagonists, like Howard Roark, Hank Rearden, and Kira Argounova, and shivered at her all-too-familiar leftist antagonists, from the heartless (Pavel Syerov and Victor Duneva), to the soulless (Ellsworth Toohey), and the brainless (Rearden’s family and friends). In college, chafing against the dismal science of Keynesian economics, I read F.A. Hayek, which naturally led me to Austrian economics. The systematic quality of Austrian economics appealed to me: everything was deductible from ...

A former Alabama supreme court chief justice who was disciplined for his stance on gay marriage is leading the Republican pack ahead of next month’s primary in the special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a Politico poll reports. Former Chief Justice Roy Moore had the support of 31 percent of those surveyed. Sen. Luther Strange, the state’s former attorney general and the current occupant of the seat, came in second at 23 percent. Rep. Mo Brooks polled 21 percent support. No other candidate in the Aug. 15 primary had more than 5 percent support.

LOL : Anti-Trump Protest a HUMILIATING FAILURE!

The reason the anti-Trump #Resistance is such a massive failure is that it’s not real. It’s not a grass-roots movement started by outraged Americans. It’s a paid for, manufactured resistance, and it’s funded almost exclusively by communist George Soros. That’s why it’s fizzled. Same ol’ same ol. People shout for impeachment, call President Trump a Nazi, hold up boring, unclever signs. Yawn. From Washington Times The streets of Los Angeles filled with President Donald Trump protesters, doing what the anti-Trump protesters do best — call for impeachment while waving banners with words like “illegitimate” and trying to come up with ...

Well well well…the cat is out of the bag. Photos have surfaced showing Mika’s own DAUGHTER wearing MAGA hats. This must have been highly humiliating for Mika who is a of course a die hard Democrat. Sometimes the intelligence gene skips a generation and it looks like it skipped past Mika to her daughter. From SarahPalin.com As Mika Brzezinski finds herself in the midst of an ongoing feud with President Trump, a photo has gone viral of her daughter wearing a MAGA hat. Emilie Hoffer, Mika’s daughter, instagrammed a photo of herself with a friend, both of whom are wearing the signature Trump hat. She can no longer scream “impeachment” over the debunked Trump-Russia probe, so she’s come up with a new line of attack. Now, Mad Max is warning President Trump that she’s taking off her “GLOVES.” We’re not exactly sure what that means, but it should turn out to be very comical. Watch the video here.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Goes To A Beach He Closed To The Public

If you have ever thought that the government is “for the people” and “by the people,” think again. Politicians are continuing to prove that they know they are better than and more equal than the rest of us. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie “shut down” the Garden state’s government over the holiday weekend over an inability for the elected politicians to agree on a budget. But Christie didn’t really shut down the government. He made sure there are cops extorting people on the roads they were stolen from to pay for, and he’s still collecting taxes and sending out welfare checks. All he really did was ruin the holiday weekend for the ...

Socialist Bernie Sanders Celebrates Independence With Government Dependence

It isn’t a secret that Bernie Sanders is a socialist.  Although his attempts to woo government worshippers fell on deaf ears after Hillary Clinton’s team stole the Democrat nomination from him, he’s making sure he doesn’t give up. Doubling down on his ignorant political rhetoric, Sanders (an “independent” from Vermont) is observing Independence Day by celebrating government dependence. Someone should tell Sanders that his policies are doomed to fail.  A quick glance at Illinois’ situation should be evidence enough, but socialists don’t like facts or evidence – they get in the way of their statist religious beliefs. We all know ...

Meet the ONLY REPUBLICAN to Vote AGAINST Kate’s Law

On Thursday, the House voted to pass Kate’s Law. The law is named after Kate Steinle, an American woman who was shot to death in San Francisco by an illegal alien who had been deported numerous times. The House passed a total of 2 bills today, which will go a long way in cracking down on illegal immigration. One of the bills will deny federal grants to sanctuary cities. The other bill, known as “Kate’s Law,” will severely punish deported aliens who illegally return to the United States. Twenty-four Democrats voted for “Kate’s Law.” Justin Amash was the only Republican to oppose it. Amash is a Palestinian “Republican” congressman who ...

Rand Paul: Insurance should be available for $1 a day

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) slammed Senate Republicans' healthcare overhaul bill on Friday, saying that it's grounded in "propping up" insurance companies. He also called for the creation of a healthcare law that would reduce insurance costs to as little as $1 a day for at least some consumers. "What I'd like to do is legalize inexpensive insurance, and you should be able to get insurance for $1 a day. I mean, you really should," Paul said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "The insurance companies make all the money; all of this is predicated upon still propping up the insurance companies." Paul's comments came a day after Republican ...

Pro-Trump group to target GOP Sen. Heller over health care bill

A pro-Trump outside group is launching an advertising blitz against Republican Sen. Dean Heller over his opposition to the health care repeal bill — a bold act of political retaliation against a member of the president’s own party. Heller, a Nevada Republican, is up for re-election in 2018 and is seen as one of the most vulnerable incumbents up for reelection this cycle. The barrage, which will be orchestrated by America First Policies, a group run by many of President Donald Trump’s top campaign advisers, is backed by more than a million dollars, according to multiple sources familiar with the planning. Digital ads are set to begin running on Friday, and television and ...

BUSTED: Here’s How Much “Socialist” Bernie Sanders Made Last Year… Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders epitomizes hypocrisy, with his “do as I say, not as I do” rhetoric regarding “Democratic” socialism. JW reports: Thanks in large part to his successful foray into authorship, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) made more than $1 million in 2016. That’s according to his latest U.S. Senate financial disclosure, which he filed Sunday after receiving a 20-day extension. The most notable source of income: book royalties. Sanders received a $795,000 advance for his best-selling book, “Our Revolution.” He got another $63,750 for his forthcoming ...

The Daily Caller reported: Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain in 2012 turned over nearly $9 million in unspent funds from his failed 2008 presidential campaign to a new foundation bearing his name, the McCain Institute for International Leadership. The institute is intended to serve as a “legacy” for McCain and “is dedicated to advancing human rights, dignity, democracy and freedom.” It is a tax-exempt ...

Swamp Critters Galore: Death Merchant Guy to Head Up Trump’s Bureau of Industry and Security

And creatures from the corporatist black lagoon just keep on coming. In May, the Donald nominated Richard Ashooh to head up the Bureau of Industry and Security at the Commerce for Export Administration. Here’s a little background on Ashooh: In 1995, Ashooh joined New Hampshire defense contractor Sanders, which manufactured electronics for the military, working his way up to be vice president of government relations—a lobbyist. Sanders was purchased by Lockheed, which later spun it off to BAE Systems, with Ashooh remaining with the company. In 2001, he was director of public affairs in BAE Systems North America’s Information and Electronic Warfare Systems division. In January ...

Progressivism’s perversion of our ruling class’s ideas about war and peace began at the turn of the 20th century. It prevailed in the winter of 1950-51 when this class, having committed the armed forces to war in Korea, decided to order them not to defeat an enemy that had already killed some 15,000 of their number, but rather to kill and die to “avoid a wider war,” and to foster an international environment pleasing to itself and allied governments. Since then, the U.S. government has won no wars. More important, it has not sought to win wars. Instead, our foreign policy establishment has spent some 100,000 American lives and trillions of dollars in Korea, Vietnam, ...

Trump Submits to Neocon Orthodoxy

Exclusive: In his Mideast trip to Saudi Arabia and Israel, President Trump sought some political safe harbor by tacking toward neocon orthodoxy and jettisoning his campaign promises of a more rational strategy, writes Daniel Lazare. By Daniel Lazare With astounding precision, Donald Trump zeroed in on the worst possible Middle East policy option in his recent trip to Saudi Arabia and made it his own. He rebuffed the efforts of Iran’s newly elected moderate government to open up communications with the West and instead deepened America’s alliances with decrepit autocratic regimes across the Persian Gulf. President Donald Trump is escorted by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of ...

President Trump on Saturday addressed American troops stationed in Italy, offering a glowing assessment of his whirlwind tour through the Middle East and Europe. Trump, who entered the Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily to the theme of the 1997 Harrison Ford movie “Air Force One,” gave himself a few self-congratulatory pats on the back and applauded his unconventional approach to the presidency. “We have been gone for close to nine days. This will be nine days. And I think we hit a home run no matter where we are,” he said before boarding Air Force One for his return flight to Washington. Trump will land late Saturday amid a growing cloud of controversy surrounding ...

We certainly don’t want leading Republicans to tumble into hypocrisy, so let’s refresh their memories.Patriots like Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan have eloquently warned of the importance of ferreting out the truth and holding politicians accountable, including for leaking classified information. Thank God for their insistence on truth-seeking!As McConnell warned, for example: “The president did not value the sacred oath. He was interested in saving his hide, not truth and justice. I submit to my colleagues that if we have no truth and we have no justice, then we have no nation of laws. No public official, no president, no man or no woman is important enough to sacrifice the ...

The comments were part of a Philippine transcript of the April 29 phone call that was circulated on Tuesday. The transcript was labeled as “confidential” on the cover sheet by the American division of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs. In Washington, a senior administration official confirmed ...
