Why Evangelical Bible Idolatry Sucks and Why I Go to a Greek Orthodox Church Even Though It’s A Mess Too

Why Evangelical Bible Idolatry Sucks and Why I Go to a Greek Orthodox Church Even Though It’s A Mess Too November 13, 2012 By Frank Schaeffer Having elevated the Bible — or at least the nicer bits that they like — to the status of a magic book evangelicals have demoted God. Their “god” is trapped in a book and kept somewhat like a tame rat inside the cage of “biblical inerrancy.” Since the evangelical/fundamentalists worship a book rather than God they can’t admit that the Bible has flaws and is just plain crazy in places. So they spend lifetimes working to make “sense” of something nonsensical, mean and stupid. Why Bible idolatry is ...

Savita Halappanavar, Death: Irish Woman Denied Abortion Dies From Blood Poisoning

DUBLIN — The debate over legalizing abortion in Ireland flared Wednesday after the government confirmed that a woman in the midst of a miscarriage was refused an abortion and died in an Irish hospital after suffering from blood poisoning. Prime Minister Enda Kenny said he was awaiting findings from three investigations into the death of Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old Indian woman who was 17 weeks pregnant. Her case highlighted the legal limbo in which pregnant women facing severe health problems can find themselves in predominantly Catholic Ireland. Ireland's constitution officially bans abortion, but a 1992 Supreme Court ruling found the procedure should be legalized for ...

Report: For The First Time In Its History, The United States Does Not Have A Protestant Majority

NEW YORK (AP) -- For the first time in its history, the United States does not have a Protestant majority, according to a new study. One reason: The number of Americans with no religious affiliation is on the rise. The percentage of Protestant adults in the U.S. has reached a low of 48 percent, the first time that Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life has reported with certainty that the number has fallen below 50 percent. The drop has long been anticipated and comes at a time when no Protestants are on the U.S. Supreme Court and the Republicans have their first presidential ticket with no Protestant nominees. Among the reasons for the change a spike in the number of American adults who ...

‘Jesus Is a Monkey’: Tensions Intensify Between Jews & Christians in the Holy Land

JERUSALEM (AP) — After a series of attacks by vandals on Christian holy sites in Israel, normally tight-lipped Roman Catholic officials are beginning to speak out, publicly appealing to authorities to take a stronger stand against the violence. The Rev. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, one of the church’s top officials in the Holy Land, said he is worried about relations between Jews and Christians in the Holy Land. He believes the blame can go all around. “I think the main atmosphere is ignorance,” Pizzaballa told The Associated Press in an interview. In this Sept. 4, 2012, file photo, a Catholic monk stands in a doorway of the Latrun Trappist Monastery where Israeli police say ...

Joel Osteen tells Soledad O’Brien: LGBT people aren’t ‘God’s best’

Conservative televangelist Joel Osteen on Thursday asserted that homosexuality was a sin and not “God’s best” — but at the same time, he said had not chosen to be straight. During an interview on CNN, host Soledad O’Brien asked Osteen how he could claim to be uplifting LGBT people while also telling them they were sinners. “It seems like in Christianity, sometimes we categorize sin,” Osteen explained. “I mean pride is a sin, being critical is a sin, being negative is a sin.” “Those are all things you can change,” O’Brien noted. “I don’t think it’s God’s best,” the evangelist insited. “You would ...

A Faded Piece of Papyrus Refers to Jesus’ Wife [Full Thread]

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A historian of early Christianity at Harvard Divinity School has identified a scrap of papyrus that she says was written in Coptic in the fourth century and contains a phrase never seen in any piece of Scripture: “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife …'” The faded papyrus fragment is smaller than a business card, with eight lines on one side, in black ink legible under a magnifying glass. Just below the line about Jesus having a wife, the papyrus includes a second provocative clause that purportedly says, “she will be able to be my disciple.” The finding is being made public in Rome on Tuesday at an international meeting of Coptic scholars ...

Panel Unanimously Decides to Regulate a Circumcision Ritual

The New York City Board of Health unanimously passed a regulation on Thursday that will require consent from parents before an infant can have a form of Jewish ritual circumcision, prevalent in parts of the ultra-Orthodox community, in which the circumciser uses his mouth to remove blood from the incision. In a morning meeting, the nine-member panel of doctors and public health professionals said that though the regulation had been challenged by some Orthodox Jewish religious authorities as an unconstitutional infringement of their religious freedom, the risk of disease from the ancient procedure was serious enough to warrant action. Indeed, some panel members said they believed that ...

DNC Erecting Creepy Giant Obama Sculpture (Obama theocracy - Mission Accomplished)

Forget the marble pillars, this time there will be a giant 16-foot sculpture of Obama made out of 15.5 tons of sand at the Democratic National Convention. Building a giant sand sculpture of a living leader might be considered a bit tacky with its worshipful implications, but building one during a hurricane in South Carolina is in particularly bad taste. But if nothing else, at least Obama has found one “Shovel Ready Project”. And this isn’t even the creepiest giant Obama sand sculpture ever made. The winner of that particular competition is still Sudarsan Pattnaik with this nightmare made out of sand. Poster Comment:

Detroit homos | Photo Credit: Thinkstock.com ANN ARBOR – Sticks and stones may break your bones, but a new University of Michigan study shows words can wound for life. The study found the commonly used phrase “that’s so gay” to describe something undesirable can have negative consequences for gay, lesbian or bisexual students. Although subtle, such language is hostile, and can be harmful to sexual minorities, said study author Michael Woodford, an assistant professor of social work at U-M. The findings appear in the current issue of the Journal of American College Health. Researchers examined the impact of hearing “that’s so gay” among 114 gay, lesbian ...

"The Constitution tells me I can be Muslim, and I can wear the head scarf. Who is Disney to tell me I cannot?" A private company with a dress code that it is (at least so far) still free to implement. But the point of this case is to reinforce the principle that wherever Islamic law and American law and practice conflict, it is American law and practice that must give way. Televangelist Pat Robertson says that LGBT students protesting Christian fast food chain Chick-fil-A at about 30 colleges and universities across the U.S. should “shut their mouth” until they can “bring forth a baby from that part of the anatomy which they concentrate on.” During his Friday 700 Club broadcast, Robertson said he was outraged that activists were protesting “a piece of white meat chicken between two pieces of white bread.” “I was reading today in Leviticus, which is the law of the Old Testament, but it lays out the reasons why land will vomit out its inhabitants and it goes through a category of stuff we are calling constitutional rights: ...

Catholic Nuns Send Letter To Romney Challenging His ‘Woeful Lack Of Knowledge’ About The Poor

The group of Catholic nuns who launched the Nuns On A Bus tour to shed light on the effects the House Republican budget would have on the poor turned its attention to the GOP’s presidential candidate this week, challenging Mitt Romney to join them for a day to learn about the plight of the poor. NETWORK, a Catholic social justice organization, issued the call on Wednesday and was joined yesterday by the Franciscan Action Network, an organization of friars and sisters. The nuns have now sent a letter to the Romney campaign, asking the candidate to join them during his current swing through Ohio. The letter again challenges Romney’s misleading television ads about welfare reform, ...

Muslim Cleric Says Sodomy Allowed if Used for Jihadist Butt Bombs posted on August 3, 2012 by da Tagliare There are some things where Islam and Christianity agree and that should not be a surprise since we both trace our faiths back to Abraham in the Old Testament. On the issue of homosexuality, both religions agree that it is a grievous sin. The Bible and the Quran teach it is wrong and punishable by death. Sadly, Christians have fallen away from the following biblical law, but many Muslim nations have not. In some Muslim countries, homosexuality can result in years in prison up to the death penalty. However in today’s climate of Muslim extremism, we are learning that they are ...

Federal Judge Orders Tennessee To Stop Blocking Muslims From Worshiping In New Mosque

Just in time for the holy month of Ramadan, a federal judge has ruled that Tennessee county officials need to stop blocking worshipers from occupying their newly-built mosque, overruling a county judge’s order that was preventing the mosque from opening. The Islamic Center of Murfreesboro sued Rutherford County, TN yesterday, asking the district judge for an emergency order to allow the mosque to open its doors to worshipers before Ramadan begins at sundown today. Federal prosecutors also filed a similar lawsuit in Nashville, alleging violations of the federal law that guarantees freedom of religion and equal protection under the Constitution. Israeli Lawmaker Destroys Copy Of The New Testament

JERUSALEM -- Calling the Christian faith’s New Testament a “despicable book,” a right-wing Israeli lawmaker tore up a copy of the biblical text and threw it in a trash can as one of his aides took pictures that he later released to Israeli media. Lawmaker Michael Ben-Ari, of the far-right National Union Party, blamed Christianity and the New Testament for the rise of anti-Semitism in Europe that led to the slaughter of 6 million Jews during the Holocaust. The copy of the New Testament had been sent to Israeli lawmakers by the Bible Society of Israel in an attempt to foster goodwill among the religions, according to a report Tuesday in Israel’s Maariv newspaper, which ...

Study: There’s nothing to fear from Radical Islam. Really? Eric Rauch If researchers at Arizona State University are to be believed, Americans (and the rest of the world), have completely misunderstood the mission of radical Muslim groups like al Qaeda and al Shabaab. Apparently, these robed, rocket-launcher wielding foot-soldiers are not particularly concerned with global domination. Nope, their real goal is to protect and preserve their culture from Western influence. In other words, these “artists formerly known as terrorists” are patriotic, not parochial. In what can only be described as academic double-speak, these ASU academics have determined that even though the ...

Condoleezza Rice and America’s Secularism Problem Gary DeMar Condoleezza Rice is being considered as Romney’s VP pick. Musically talented, smart, a great speaker, but what does she really believe? The picture I can’t get out of my mind is Rice swearing in homosexual physician Mark Dybul as the United States Global AIDS coordinator at a ceremony on October 10, 2007 with his “partner” and Laura Bush in attendance. There is a battle raging today over the role religion plays in public and political life. To hear secularists tell it, religion is the problem and reason is the solution. Fundamentalists of all types are being singled out as the inhibitors of progress ...

A Georgia couple was arrested this week on charges of child cruelty and false imprisonment after their 15-year-old daughter told authorities that she was forced to live in a chicken coop and wear a remote-controlled shock collar. The 15-year-old, who was home schooled, reportedly said that her adopted parents, Samuel and Diana Franklin, punished her for not finishing school work by spending up to six days at a time in the chicken coop behind their house in Butler over the past two years. Chicken coops are known to have high levels of ammonia (PDF) which can be dangerous to both humans and animals. Authorities said that the girl was also forced to do manual labor and spend time in a ...

2012 marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the papal encyclical Mit Brennender Sorge ("With Burning Anxiety") which denounced National Socialism and any ideology that "divinizes" the state "to an idolatrous level." Such ideologies were increasingly widespread in Europe in 1937, and after four years of Hitler, the German state had become increasingly brutal, and even those who escaped slavery or murder saw what few rights they had left under siege. Things would become much worse, and by 1943, when the ...
