How God turns a French atheist into a Christian theologian - My conversion story
Post Date: 2015-01-19 12:07:09 by redleghunter

A number of people lately have been intrigued to meet a French theologian, and have asked me to tell them the story of how I, a French atheist, became a Christian scholar. Even the theologians and apologists I met recently at the ETS Conference in Baltimore (where by God’s grace I was delivering my first scholarly paper) seemed to care (understandably) more about my conversion from atheism than my immediate theology paper! Therefore, it seemed fitting to type it up properly, to have a clean telling of that story of God breaking into my life, ready to be shared with people who ask. So here it is (and please let me know if you spot spelling mistakes or awkward sentences, I’m still ...

Richard Dawkins letter to his 10 year old daughter [on science and faith] [Full Thread]

To my dearest daughter, Now that you are ten, I want to write to you about something that is important to me. Have you ever wondered how we know the things that we know? How do we know, for instance, that the stars, which look like tiny pinpricks in the sky, are really huge balls of fire like the Sun and very far away? And how do we know that the Earth is a smaller ball whirling round one of those stars, the Sun? The answer to these questions is ‘evidence’. Sometimes evidence means actually seeing (or hearing, feeling, smelling….) that something is true. Astronauts have traveled far enough from the Earth to see with their own eyes that it is round. Sometimes our eyes need ...

How do you know that the Bible is Divinely inspired?

How do you know that the Bible is Divinely inspired? Leave a comment Posted by Anna Diehl on November 8, 2013 What we call the Bible today is a collection of old manuscripts that are believed to be Divinely inspired. The entire book did not magically appear one day out of thin air; instead the documents collected in it came into being at very different points in history. The ages of some manuscripts differ by centuries. It is important that we understand how our Bible came into being and what a tenuous thing its existence really is. After all, who’s to say that the Bible you read is really the correct one? Within the Christian Church there are several different biblical canons ...

U.S. Military Not Taught Ideology of Islamic Jihad, ‘Our Nation Is In Great Peril,’ Says CSP Tommy Waller, director of state outreach for the Center for Security Policy. Waller, a Marine Reserve major, speaking via Skype at the National Press Club on Jan. 16, said he was speaking as an employee of the CSP, a conservative national security group in Washington, D.C., which released that day a new report, The Secure Freedom Strategy: A Plan for Victory Over the Global Jihad Movement. The plan, designed by 16 experts on counter-terrorism, intelligence, the military and national security, is based on President Ronald Reagan’s plan to defeat the Communist Soviet Union. The ...

Duke University reverses plan for bell tower Muslim call to prayer By Marti Maguire RALEIGH, N.C. Thu Jan 15, 2015 6:09pm EST (Reuters) - Duke University scrapped plans on Thursday to allow the Muslim call to prayer to emanate from its chapel bell tower, university officials said, amid fierce criticism from conservative Christians and anger from alumni. Earlier in the week, university officials said the weekly chant by Muslim students, known as the adhan, would be amplified from Duke Chapel beginning on Friday. "Duke remains committed to fostering an inclusive, tolerant and welcoming campus for all of its students," said university spokesman Michael Schoenfeld in a statement ...

The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frustration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cell phone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and lookedup into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up. He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a ...

School district caves after balking to offer Hobby Lobby Bible course
Post Date: 2014-12-12 12:21:13 by redleghunter

An Oklahoma school district has announced that it has indefinitely cancelled a Bible curriculum developed by Hobby Lobby. Even though school officials postponed implementing the curriculum from its initial August launch date to January, the full rejection of the course that was spearheaded by the giant Christian retail chain came as a surprise to many, especially after the school district unanimously voted (4-0) to adopt the Bible history curriculum earlier this year. One of the chief opponents to implementing the Bible curriculum from the onset of the proposal has been the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), an atheist group that has gained a reputation for striving to eliminate ...

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday that the Americas were discovered by Muslims in the 12th century, nearly three centuries before Christopher Columbus set foot there. "Contacts between Latin America and Islam date back to the 12th century. Muslims discovered America in 1178, not Christopher Columbus," the conservative president said in a televised speech during an Istanbul summit of Muslim leaders from Latin America. "Muslim sailors arrived in America from 1178. Columbus mentioned the existence of a mosque on a hill on the Cuban coast," Erdogan said. Erdogan said that Ankara was even prepared to build a mosque at the site mentioned by the Genoese ...

Today is the feast day of St. Nectarios of Aegina, a relatively modern Saint who had to deal with many relatively modern problems. His holy way of life led to him being vilified by the liberal media in Greece and slandered by many who called themselves Christian. St. Nectarios, pray to God for us! "The Life of St. Nectarios His Childhood Years Anastasios Kephalas, son of Dimosthenis and Vassiliki, was born on October 1st, 1846, in Eastern Selyvria of Thrace (Now Turkey). Post some of your favorite hymns to God. To get things started, here is Fr. Seraphim bit-Karibi leading a few members of his flock in singing the Trisagion Hymn in an unfinished Church building that is being built in the country of Georgia. Although in Georgia, they are Assyrian Orthodox and singing in Aramaic -- the language of Jesus Christ when he was Incarnate among us. A translation of the hymn in English: "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us!" It sounds like heaven to me.

Paul has four of these "faithful sayings." The first occurs in 1 Timothy 1:15, "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." The next is in 1 Timothy 4:8-9, "Godliness is profitable unto all things, having the promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation." The third is in 2 Timothy 2:12, "It is a faithful saying—If we suffer with Him we shall also reign with Him"; and the fourth is in Titus 3:8, "This is a faithful saying, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good ...

Retired pope says interreligious dialogue no substitute for mission

VATICAN CITY - Retired Pope Benedict XVI said dialogue with other religions is no substitute for spreading the Gospel to non-Christian cultures, and warned against relativistic ideas of religious truth as "lethal to faith." He also said the true motivation for missionary work is not to increase the church's size but to share the joy of knowing Christ. The retired pope's words appeared in written remarks to faculty members and students at Rome's Pontifical Urbanian University, which belongs to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Archbishop Georg Ganswein, prefect of the papal household and personal secretary to retired Pope Benedict, read the 1,800 ...

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Catholic bishops scrapped their landmark welcome to gays Saturday, showing deep divisions at the end of a two-week meeting sought by Pope Francis to chart a more merciful approach to ministering to Catholic families. The bishops failed to approve even a watered-down section on ministering to homosexuals that stripped away the welcoming tone of acceptance contained in a draft document earlier in the week.Rather than considering gays as individuals who had gifts to offer the church, the revised paragraph referred to homosexuality as one of the problems Catholic families have to confront. It said "people with homosexual tendencies must be welcomed with respect and ...

Cardinal Raymond Burke, the conservative American who holds the top position in the Vatican’s justice system, on Friday told BuzzFeed he was being demoted. Burke, a former archbishop of St Louis, has publicly challenged Pope Francis on issues including abortion and homosexuality. A preliminary report from the church’s extraordinary synod on the family, released on Monday, signalled a readiness to adopt a more conciliatory attitude towards homosexuality, divorce and other “irregular” family situations. More than 200 bishops contributed to the report, which said: “Homosexuals have gifts and qualities to offer to the Christian community: are we capable of ...

When I was a small boy, I was adopted. I grew up remembering nothing of my birth family and unaware that I had a biological sister, named Betsy. Many years later, I went in search of my biological family, but for Betsy it was too late: she had died. This is the story of how I was reunited with her — in Heaven. Before I start, I should explain that I am a scientist, who has spent a lifetime studying the workings of the brain. My adoptive father was a neurosurgeon and I followed his path, becoming an neurosurgeon myself and an academic who taught brain science at Harvard Medical School. Although nominally a Christian, I was sceptical when patients described spiritual experiences to ...

Vatican alters draft report translation about gays

( Pope Francis greets a Vatican Swiss Guard as he arrives for a morning session of a two-week synod on family issues, at the Vatican, Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014.) VATICAN CITY — The contentious debate over the Vatican's ground-breaking overture to gays has taken a new twist. The Vatican on Thursday released a new English translation of the draft report of bishops debating family issues. The new translation significantly alters the section about gays, diminishing the welcoming tone from the original Italian. The report has been highly criticized by many conservative English-speaking bishops — Americans and Africans mostly — primarily because of the welcome extended to ...

Caritas Internationalis, the Vatican's top social justice body, is involved in leading a radically pro-abortion, pro-homosexual and communist organization, according to a new in-depth report by the American Life League (ALL). The World Social Forum (WSF) is an annual international meeting of social justice organizations formed in 2001. It describes itself as a forum for “social movements, networks, NGOs and other civil society organizations opposed to neo- liberalism and a world dominated by capital or by any form of imperialism.” However, the organization is also a vehicle for much more than radically leftist economic thinking, according to ALL’s report. “The ...
