Debian 8.0 'Jessie' is out and even Microsoft is celebrating

The wait is over. Debian 8.0—“Jessie”—will be released on April 25, after a nearly two-year development cycle for the next release of this long-standing Linux distribution. Microsoft is even throwing Debian a birthday party, complete with cake. Sure, it’s basically just an advertisement for Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing platform, but it’s still amusing. Software, security, and desktop updates As usual—with every Linux distribution, really—the biggest changes you’ll notice are package updates. The majority of the packages included with Debian have had their versions bumped to the latest ones. From desktop environments and desktop ...

Google Maps hides an image of the Android robot urinating on Apple

A small patch of terrain in Google Maps just south of the Pakistani city of Rawlpindi has been found to contain a bizarre image of the Android robot urinating on the Apple logo. The image, apparently an Easter egg added by a Google employee or data provider, remains visible on Google Maps itself. While some parts of Google’s mapping data are user-editable, the base terrain information isn’t, suggesting that whoever inserted the image has privileged access – and perhaps thought it wouldn’t be found. The image in its original location. Unsurprisingly, the real terrain underneath bears no resemblance to the picture, (loosely) adapted from a famous bootleg of Bill ...

Welcome to the front lines of the battle for your Facebook news feed. Vincent Harris wants details, and he’s not getting them. The 26-year-old political consultant is quizzing two Facebook guys who’ve showed up at the Austin headquarters of his media firm, and all he’s getting back is a pat lecture about the value of social networking for online campaigns. Harris and the dozen staffers gathered in his company’s conference room don’t exactly need to be convinced: This is what they do. And by the time the 2016 presidential campaign is over, these twentysomethings expect to be paid millions of dollars for doing it well. They already spend all day everyday on the ...

Stop what you're doing. Whatever it is, it doesn't matter — you could be playing with cats over the Internet instead. The Humane Society of Utah has set up in a room of its shelter three remote-controlled cat toys that people can control through the iPet Companion website. Visitors to the site wait their turn for a two-minute session that gives you control over the toys, and a surveillance camera to watch the cats play. Once the session is over, you can get back in line for another turn. The Murray shelter launched the new feature Monday morning, and hope it will dispel the myth that a shelter is "a sad, depressing place" and shine special attention on cats who tend to ...

Scientists develop algorithm that can auto-ban internet trolls

Researchers at Cornell University claim to be able to identify internet trolls with more than 80% AUC*, positing the possibility of creating automated methods to identify or even auto-ban forum and comment-thread pests. Justin Cheng, Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil and Jure Leskovec submitted the paper Antisocial Behavior in Online Discussion Communities [PDF] in early April, which details the findings from an 18-month study of banned commenters over three high-traffic communities: news giant cnn.com, political hub breitbart.com and the vocal gaming communities at ign.com. The study, which was partly-funded by Google and had the cooperation of the Disqus commenting ecosphere, compared ...

Facebook accused of tracking all users even if they delete accounts, ask never to be followed

A new report claims that Facebook secretly installs tracking cookies on users’ computers, allowing them to follow users around the internet even after they’ve left the website, deleted their account and requested to be no longer followed. Academic researchers said that the report showed that the company was breaking European law with its tracking policies. The law requires that users are told if their computers are receiving cookies except for specific circumstances.Facebook’s tracking — which it does so that it can tailor advertising — involves putting cookies or small pieces of software on users’ computers, so that they can then be followed around the ...

The European Union on Thursday sharply criticized China's new cyber security rules, joining a global effort to challenge measures that U.S. and EU companies say could force them out of the Chinese market. [...] China's banking regulator has adopted new standards requiring tech products to be "secure and controllable" for use in the financial sector. Those that have not been developed in China must be registered with the government, putting at risk corporate secrets, secure emails and encrypted data. Internet Explorer is not a popular name when it comes to browsers, and Microsoft has tried various things to boost brand recognition of their browser and improve its reputation. Recently, the company confirmed that Internet Explorer is going away for good. While speaking at Microsoft's Convergence yesterday, the company's marketing chief Chris Capossela said the company is looking for a new name and brand for their browser. "We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10," said Capossela. "We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project ...

New smoking gun further ties NSA to omnipotent “Equation Group” hackers What are the chances unrelated state-sponsored projects were both named "BACKSNARF"? Researchers from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab have uncovered more evidence tying the US National Security Agency to a nearly omnipotent group of hackers who operated undetected for at least 14 years. The Kaspersky researchers once again stopped short of saying the hacking collective they dubbed Equation Group was the handiwork of the NSA, saying only that the operation had to have been sponsored by a nation-state with nearly unlimited resources to dedicate to the project. Still, they heaped new findings on top of a ...

HBO Go Blocked on PS4 by Comcast, Just Like on PS3

Much like the PlayStation 3 version of the app, HBO Go on PlayStation 4 is blocked if you're a Comcast Xfinity customer. Sony announced the much-anticipated arrival of the HBO Go app on PS4 earlier this week. Those who had been hoping the PS4 version would bring a resolution to the problem that has existed on PS3 for a year were sorely disappointed; Comcast continues to prevent its customers from accessing to the streaming service despite competitors like AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, and many others allowing it. Comcast has yet to offer a satisfactory answer for the lack of support. As Techdirt notes, customer complaints over the past year--since the PS3 got HBO ...

Just suppose that I wanted to create a machine that would boot from a USB flash drive - a relatively big flash drive - 32gb to 64gb - or whatever is required. And I wanted this thing to boot either Win7 or XP. Anybody here have any experience with such an experience? FYI - I am planning to create this thing on a new Zotac 'ZBox' with a Celeron processor and 4GB of memory (which I have - the memory - not the Zbox). So what I'm basically trying to do is create a 'disk-less' computer. Shouldn't be fraught with problems - Eh? Thanks for any help / insight! ZBOX 1320-U:

Spies Can Track You Just by Watching Your Phone’s Power Use

Smartphone users might balk at letting a random app like Candy Crush or Shazam track their every move via GPS. But researchers have found that Android phones reveal information about your location to every app on your device through a different, unlikely data leak: the phone’s power consumption. Researchers at Stanford University and Israel’s defense research group Rafael have created a technique they call PowerSpy, which they say can gather information about an Android phone’s geolocation merely by tracking its power use over time. That data, unlike GPS or Wi-Fi location tracking, is freely available to any installed app without a requirement to ask the user’s ...

Super-cookie crumbles: Verizon vows to kill off hated zombie stalkersThis time opt-out actually means opt-out, we're told Verizon has backed down over its fingerprinting of subscribers using so-called immortal "super cookies." In 2012, the US mobile telco started injecting unique identifying headers (UIDHs) into every HTTP request users made to websites via the Verizon network. This allowed sneaky ad agencies to recognize people as they moved from site to site, and display ads supposedly tailored to individuals' interests. Deleting all your cookies from your web browser, or using something like Chrome's incognito mode, will not kill off the header – because it is ...

Google has recently revealed that it is dropping the paid subscription from Google Earth Pro, a more robust version of its Google Earth software. The Pro service will now be available for free, previously costing $399 per year. While the standard version of Google Earth has often been more than enough for casual map and globe users, the Pro version has seen use among professionals from scientists to businesses, who have been able to take advantage of advanced features previously not available for free. Among the main differences between Google Earth and its Pro sibling are high-resolution imagery and automated geographic location. Pro allows users to print high-res photos, but standard ...

The scam sites on which visitors landed offered weight loss, anti-aging and IQ enhancing products. The sites looked like legitimate blogs and magazines with all kinds of fake scientific research on the offered products, enhanced with fake recommendations of “customers”. The issues with the malicious advertisements started around the middle of December and saw a large peak on Friday the 9th of January. On the Google Adsense Forum more than 180 complaints of angry webmasters were posted that day. Webmasters displaying Google Adsense advertisements noticed how their visitors were redirected by the malicious advertisements. Google resolved the issue a day later on January 10th. ...

It now looks like Sheldon will have to rely on his robotic doppelganger a bit longer because the days of useful android options have been pushed back even further. Ladies and gentlemen… Google Glass is dead. The company insists it is still committed to launching the smart glasses as a consumer product, but will stop producing Glass in its present form. Instead it will focus on “future versions of ...

MintBox Mini gives Linux users a pocket-sized PC

It seems almost ironic that while are phones seem to be getting bigger, PCs are getting smaller. At least those that aren't hulking beasts constructed for raw power, for gaming and whatnot. Though not as ridiculously small as Xiaomi's Mi Box mini "set top box", if you could still call it that, this new MintBox Mini still tries to deliver a PC that is powerful enough for your basic computing needs yet small enough to fit in your pocket. Presuming, of course, you'd actually keep one in your pocket. The MintBox Mini comes from Fit-PC, a company that has been making these mini PC devices for quite some time now. In fact, this is the third incarnation of its MintBox line ...

Microsoft is building a new browser that will replace Internet Explorer as the default in Windows 10, features include a new, clean UI, Cortana integration and inking support. Even though Internet Explorer still has a fairly large marketshare in some parts of the world, there’s no denying that it has a serious image problem. Problems with IE6 through 8, the lack of web standards support and the advent of Google Chrome have made a serious dent in Internet Explorer’s reputation, And even though Microsoft has gone through a lot of effort to make its browser compatible with the ever evolving web standards and has gone to great lengths to boost its popularity, it looks like they are ...

Retailing for up to $5,686 (£3,821), the Satis toilet includes automatic flushing, bidet spray, music and fragrance release. The toilet, manufactured by Japanese firm Lixil, is controlled via an Android app called My Satis. But a hardware flaw means any phone with the app could activate any of the toilets, researchers say. The toilet uses bluetooth to receive instructions via the app, but the Pin code for every model is hardwired to be four zeros (0000), meaning that it cannot be reset and can be activated by ...

In a dramatic about-face on a key internet issue yesterday, Google told the FCC that the network neutrality rules Google once championed don’t give citizens the right to run servers on their home broadband connections, and that the Google Fiber network is perfectly within its rights to prohibit customers from attaching the legal devices of their choice to its network. At issue is Google Fiber’s Terms of Service, which contains a broad prohibition against customers attaching “servers” to its ultrafast 1 Gbps network in Kansas City. Google wants to ban the use of servers because it plans to offer a business class offering in the future. A potential customer, Douglas ...
