FCC Opens Unused TV Airwaves to High-Speed Broadband (+ Cell phone location tracking)

WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission approved a proposal on Thursday that will open vast amounts of unused broadcast television airwaves for high-speed wireless broadband networks and other unlicensed applications. The newly available airwaves, which were freed up by the conversion of television signals from analog to digital, constitute the first significant block of spectrum made available for unlicensed use by the F.C.C. in 20 years. It was a victory that did not come easily, or quickly, however. The F.C.C. first approved a similar measure in 2008, but objections to the technical requirements for unlicensed devices drew objections from 17 companies or groups on ...

Virus-Busting Chips! Why Intel Paid Billions for McAfee.

The news of Intel's very expensive McAfee purchase raises one obvious question: why is security software worth over $7 billion to a chip maker? Intel has been short on specifics, but it's becoming clear that virus-killing silicon is coming. Computer security with hardware roots isn't new for Intel, but it's stuck in last-gen tech that can't stop your system from getting smoked. Feature sets that can help filter out malicious network traffic or let CPUs screen for certain worms have been safeguarding computers you've already thrown away by now. But they're limited. Right now, most of the anti-malware grunt work is being handled by software. Letting applications ...

Top Ten Reasons You Should Quit Facebook

Top Ten Reasons You Should Quit Facebook Facebook privacy policies keep going down the drain. That's enough reason for many to abandon it. Here you will find nine more: After some reflection, I've decided to delete my account on Facebook. I'd like to encourage you to do the same. This is part altruism and part selfish. The altruism part is that I think Facebook, as a company, is unethical. The selfish part is that I'd like my own social network to migrate away from Facebook so that I'm not missing anything. In any event, here's my "Top Ten" reasons for why you should join me and many others and delete your account. 10. Facebook's Terms Of Service are ...

The world — maybe even China itself — knows little of its hacker foe

The world — maybe even China itself — knows little of its hacker foe/Google attacks teach us only that we know nothing/The Chinese hacker is the perfect 21st-century bogeyman — even the Chinese Government may not be able to grasp the monster’s tentaclesAs bogeymen go, the Chinese hacker is as close to perfection as the early 21st century gets: an agent of asymmetric warfare, deadly with weapons that only a fraction of society can grasp and possibly sanctioned by the East’s great emerging superpower. If the most recent cyber attacks on Google show anything, it is that the world has so far seen only a rough sketch of what it is up against. Intelligence agencies and ...

Browser Stats: Firefox 3.5 Is More Popular Than IE 7 or IE 8
Post Date: 2009-12-23 08:18:30 by A K A Stone

Firefox has finally achieved one of its main goals, surpassing Internet Explorer as the most popular web browser. This latest shift is illustrated by a new batch of browser share stats from analytics firm StatCounter, which is making the rounds on tech news blogs Tuesday. There is, however, one big catch to StatCounter’s numbers — to arrive at the conclusion that Firefox is bigger than IE, you have to break down both Firefox and Internet Explorer’s share into separate version numbers. Firefox’s popularity among web evangelists sometimes leads to overly-optimistic press, and StatCounter’s latest numbers are no exception. Which isn’t to say that ...

Enable Web Browsing and Full Catalog Access on International Kindle

Ever since Amazon’s Kindle 2 arrived in Gadget Lab’s Spanish Bureau (aka my apartment), I have been trying to restore its lost functionality. Finally, with some rather annoying account jiggery-pokery, I have enabled full (and free) web access and I can now buy any book I like from the Kindle Store. To recap, the Kindle International edition shipped in a somewhat crippled state, with access to a (rather small) subset of the Kindle Store’s contents, and with 3G web browsing limited to the Kindle Store itself and to Wikipedia (and worse, the U.S. Wikipedia). Also, there are no for-pay blogs, and no pictures in newspapers. To be fair to Amazon, these problems are caused by ...

Demand For H-1b Visas Increasing

As many of you have been finding out lately, there aren’t very many companies that are hiring. The jobs just aren’t there–unless you are an foreigner who wants to work here because for them it’s almost a mini hiring boom. An article in the India Post titled: “Sudden increase in demand for H1B visa” is no joke: After months of lackluster response, US authorities have witnessed a sudden increase in demand for H-1B work visa, which is popular among Indian professionals, though the applications received so far are still over 6,000 short of the Congress-mandated cap of 65,000. Patrick Thibodeau of Computerworld wrote an article recently but I think there is some ...

Wireless Brain-to-Computer Connection Synthesizes Speech

A system that turns brain waves into FM radio signals and decodes them as sound is the first totally wireless brain-computer interface. For now, 26-year-old Erik Ramsey, left almost entirely paralyzed by a horrific car accident 10 years ago, can only express vowel sounds with the system. That’s less than can be accomplished with wired brain-computer interfaces. But it’s still a promising step. “All the groups working on BCIs are working toward wireless solutions. They are very superior,” said Frank Guenther a Boston University cognitive scientist who helped developed Ramsey’s system. In the last decade, brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, have made the jump from speculation to ...

Senate Race Littered With Cyber Smears

The day after Thanksgiving, a video was posted anonymously on YouTube that portrayed Republican U.S. Senate candidate Trey Grayson as Adolf Hitler in a popular online parody of a German film about Hitler's final days. Within days, it got attention from national media and was subsequently removed from YouTube - but not before it was viewed by more than 500 people on YouTube and disseminated on political blogs across Kentucky. It was the latest in a long string of anonymous Internet-based attacks in both the Democratic and Republican Senate primary races. No candidate has been immune from the attacks, which officials call a 21st-century version of tactics that have been around for ...

Just a year after the world's fastest supercomputers broke the petaflop barrier by performing one thousand trillion calculations per second, nuclear physicists are planning a 20-petaflop machine in conjunction with IBM. Nicknamed Sequoia, the Department of Energy computer will most likely be the most powerful in the world when it is released. If it were running today, it'd be more than 10 times faster than any machine in existence. When it's installed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in 2012, it could make new kinds of calculations possible, but initially, that power will be primarily used to simulate nuclear explosions, as many of its supercomputer forebears have ...

Google is to launch a service that would enable users to access their personal computer from any internet connection, according to industry reports. But campaigners warn that it would give the online behemoth unprecedented control over individuals' personal data. The Google Drive, or "GDrive", could kill off the desktop computer, which relies on a powerful hard drive. Instead a user's personal files and operating system could be stored on Google's own servers and accessed via the internet. The long-rumoured GDrive is expected to be launched this year, according to the technology news website TG Daily, which described it as "the most anticipated Google product so ...

Google Docs Design Flaw May Fool You Into Making Your Docs Editable by Anyone

If you're currently sharing spreadsheets, documents or presentations using Google Docs, go double-check the permissions settings of those shared docs right now. Wired.com has discovered a design flaw in the web app's user interface that could lead users to mistakenly open up their docs to editing by anybody on the internet. Funny thing is, we found out about it the hard way. A co-worker of mine discovered Wednesday morning that the Wired Tech Layoff Tracker, a spreadsheet we're sharing with all of you using Google's free service, had been changed. The name of the reader who had edited the doc wasn't known to my co-worker, and he certainly hadn't knowingly given ...

Hardware Hacker Charged With Selling Cable Modems That Get Free Broadband

In the first case of its kind, a Pennsylvania man faces federal criminal charges for allegedly selling hacked cable modems capable of stealing free, anonymous internet service from broadband providers. Thomas Swingler was charged Thursday in federal court in New York with trafficking in unlawful access devices for his online business cablehack.net. The site, still in operation, sells "pre-modded" Motorola Surfboard modems for between $38 and $58 that can be customized by the owner without a cable company's knowledge. Among other things, the user can set their own upload and download rates, and change the MAC address — the unique identifier normally hard-coded into a ...

Supercomputers Break Petaflop Barrier, Transforming Science

A new crop of supercomputers is breaking down the petaflop speed barrier, pushing high-performance computing into a new realm that could change science more profoundly than at any time since Galileo, leading researchers say. When the Top 500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers was announced at the international supercomputing conference in Austin, Texas, on Monday, IBM had barely managed to cling to the top spot, fending off a challenge from Cray. But both competitors broke petaflop speeds, performing 1.105 and 1.059 quadrillion floating-point calculations per second, the first two computers to do so. These computers aren't just faster than those they pushed further down ...

Surfing As GoogleBot - Their IP, Their User-Agent, Their Bot Characteristics

After reading this article and this article which give frustratingly over-simplifications on user-agent spoofing to get past cloaked websites, I figured I should write something on how to REALLY behave like Google. Cloaking often goes well beyond this, using IP delivery, User Agent cloaking, javascript and cookie detection, and referer detection - all of which can be used to determine that you are you and not a bot. So, how do you beat all 5 major types of cloaking? 1. Beat IP Delivery: Use Google Translate as a Proxy, translating from spanish->english even though the site is already in English. 2. Beat User-Agent Cloaking: Use the FirefoxUser-Agent Switcher to spoof as GoogleBot 3. ...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Lost drivers soon will be able to Google for help at the pump. As part of a partnership to be announced Wednesday, the online search leader will dispense driving directions at thousands of gasoline pumps across the United States beginning early next month. The pumps, made by Gilbarco Veeder-Root, include an Internet connection and will display Google's mapping service in color on a small screen. Motorists will be able to scroll through several categories to find local landmarks, hotels, restaurants and hospitals selected by the gas station's owner. After the driver selects a destination, the pump will print out directions. Eventually, Gilbarco Veeder-Root ...

100% Proof Google is Keeping Alternative Media Sites Down

As if it were not bad enough that we are censored by the main stream media, now there's a new type of suppression being implemented upon conspiracy related websites and alternative media sources. It's called Link Relevance Suppression, and it's being used on most of the alternative media websites to lower traffic being driven to them by the popular search engine Google. It's also being used in the opposite way to "Promote" Neo-Con supporting websites by giving them double the "Link Relevance" Let me explain how Google indexes sites that go into the search cue when someone types in certain keywords relating that site. Google enables face recognition in Image Search?

Reader Dennis writes in with a juicy tidbit regarding Google Image Search: When you add &imgtype=face to the picture search string, only photos with faces are showing up. This feature has not been officially announced yet and I have no idea how reliable it works. For example, a regular Google Image Search for "paris" returns lots of photos of the city. The modified search returns lots of photos of Paris Hilton. The same technique works for "Trapani" - a regular search turns up photos of the Sicilian city of Trapani, the modified version gives you photos of people's faces with the last name Trapani. Freaky! Thanks, Dennis!

In the next year, Bill Gates will manage one of the highest-profile transitions in American business history — he’ll leave his day job as chairman at Microsoft, the $300 billion company he co-founded 32 years ago, and will move full time into philanthropy. But before he leaves, Gates has a few more high-tech projects to finish. Until this morning, one project — almost five years in the making and code-named 'Milan,’ — was top-secret. In a TODAY exclusive, I had a chance to talk with Gates at Microsoft’s Redmond, Wash., campus about a revolutionary new device Microsoft now calls “Surface.” http://(MSNBC.com is a Microsoft-NBC Universal joint ...

The company is working with a leading digital forgery specialist at Dartmouth College, who met with the Associated Press last month. Click here for a gallery of famous fake photos.
