Russian Trolls Are Still Co-Opting Black Organizers’ Events Post Date: 2017-11-08 09:10:46 by Willie Green

Facebook banned them. That didnt stop their mischief. Since 1994, Charles Stamps has organized the MLK Grande Parade, an annual march in Houston. But right now, the January event is getting an unusual signal boost: from BlackMattersUS.com, a website that largely looks like a hub of racial-justice activism but is in fact the creation of Kremlin-funded trolls who attempted to intensify heated American issues during the 2016 election and have continued to do so in the year since. I think its a load of BS. My name is Charlesits not comrade, Stamps told me Monday when I called him, informing him for the first time that BlackMattersUS was promoting his event. ...
A surge of sites and apps are exhausting your CPU to mine cryptocurrency Post Date: 2017-10-31 11:51:29 by Willie Green

Coinhive harnesses the resources of 500 million people with no questions asked. The Internet is awash with covert crypto currency miners that bog down computers and even smartphones with computationally intensive math problems called by hacked or ethically questionable sites. The latest examples came on Monday with the revelation from antivirus provider Trend Micro that at least two Android apps with as many as 50,000 downloads from Google Play were recently caught putting crypto miners inside a hidden browser window. The miners caused phones running the apps to run JavaScript hosted on Coinhive.com, a site that harnesses the CPUs of millions of PCs to mine the Monero crypto currency. In ...

In addition, from time to time because of the changing nature of this problem, it is contemplated that the President-elect will be hosting a series of meetings with senior corporate executives from companies which have faced or are facing challenges similar to those ...

Why Vladimir Putin’s Russia Is Backing Donald Trump Post Date: 2016-11-04 18:45:22 by A Pole

In phone calls, meetings and cables, Americas European allies have expressed alarm to one another about Donald Trumps public statements denying Moscows role in cyberattacks designed to interfere with the U.S. election. They fear the Republican nominee for president has emboldened the Kremlin in its unprecedented cybercampaign to disrupt elections in multiple countries in hopes of weakening Western alliances, according to intelligence, law enforcement and other government officials in the United States and Europe. While American intelligence officers have privately briefed Trump about Russias attempts to influence the U.S. election, he has publicly dismissed that ...

Most serious Linux privilege-escalation bug ever is under active exploit (updated) Lurking in the kernel for nine years, flaw gives untrusted users unfettered root access. Dan Goodin - 10/20/2016, 3:20 PM Ars Technica A serious vulnerability that has been present for nine years in virtually all versions of the Linux operating system is under active exploit, according to researchers who are advising users to install a patch as soon as possible. While CVE-2016-5195, as the bug is cataloged, amounts to a mere privilege-escalation vulnerability rather than a more serious code-execution vulnerability, there are several reasons many researchers are taking it extremely seriously. ...
The internet belongs to the world, not to Ted Cruz Post Date: 2016-09-21 08:52:40 by Willie Green

Congressional Republicans have recently taken a new hostage in their never-ending stream of threats to shut down the government. This time, their target is the transfer of control of usually unseen clerical functions that keep the internet working. Somehow this arcane transition has become one of the major hurdles to funding the government. So how did we get here? The story actually started two decades ago when the federal government announced that it would step away from running the technical functions of the internet. Since then the Department of Commerce, under the watch of three Presidents, including administrations of both parties, has been living up to this commitment. The ...

Voting is partially a social endeavor, in which people consider the opinions of others when making up their own minds. Increasingly, though, they're being influenced by an inhuman force: software robots specifically designed to deceive them.Lest democracy be undermined, humans need help in distinguishing their brethren from the bots. Two years ago, in a report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the social networking site Twitter estimated that more than 23 million of its active user accounts were being run by bots -- software agents or bits of code that act on their own to respond to news and world events. They interact with real users, never revealing ...

China has now taken the lead in the supercomputing industry as they now have more supercomputers than the United States with their new Sunway TaihuLight machine that has a theoretical top speed of 125 petaflops. Top500, who compiles the rankings of supercomputers twice every year, has revealed that the China-made Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is more than two times as powerful as the previous recordholder. It is located in the Chinese Supercomputing Center located in the Jiuangsu province. What made the achievement more impressive is that the Sunway TaihuLight is made from China's own chips without relying on existing architecture from Intel, the Wall Street Journal has learned. ...

Image: Facebook Using an obscure law, written in 1789 the All Writs Act the US government has ordered Apple to place a back door into its iOS software so the FBI can decrypt information on an iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino shooters. It has finally come to this. After years of arguments by virtually every industry specialist that back doors will be a bigger boon to hackers and to our nations enemies than publishing our nuclear codes and giving the keys to all of our military weapons to the Russians and the Chinese, our government has chosen, once again, not to listen to the minds that have created the glue that holds this world together. I got a little too excited when the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) chief called Adblock Plus (ABP) "an unethical, immoral, mendacious coven of techie wannabes." I immediately wanted to know when the next coven meeting was and how many stars to sew onto my witch cape. The chief's accusations of heresy came after ABP was disinvited from the bureau's Leadership Summit. IAB's chief further twisted the ceremonial dagger by saying they weren't invited "in the first place." After that splendid outburst of public bitchiness, finding and joining the ad-blocking coven was my destiny. But little did I know that any ad-free witchery Adblock Plus might've ...
Your Old USB Flash Drive Could Help Fight North Korean Repression Post Date: 2016-02-09 16:47:02 by Willie Green

A tiny USB memory stick is unlikely to bring down Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un, but thousands upon thousands of them just might help enlighten the North Korean people to the freedoms enjoyed by the outside world, according to human-rights activists. The New York-based Human Rights Foundation and Forum 280, a Silicon Valley nonprofit, have teamed up to launch a program that will collect donated USB flash drives, load them with content ranging from "South Korean soap operas to Hollywood films to Korean-language versions of Wikipedia to interviews with North Korean defectors," and smuggle them into the North for ordinary North Koreans to enjoy. The goal of the initiative, dubbed ...

Netflix has a lot of streaming content, but so do services like Hulu and HBO. The Pirate Bay has put them all to shame now with the combination of in-browser streaming technology combined with its usual disregard for copyright. TPB is the first major torrent tracker to support a new streaming plugin called Torrents-Time. After downloading, users can stream any video listed on the site. Torrents-Time is a separate project that is not directly affiliated with TPB. It has been integrated with a few smaller sites, and theres a dedicated website for the service. Its also (partially) open source and available on GitHub. The Pirate Bay has Torrents-Time links right next to the ...

I've noticed some issues with the site being inaccessible recently. A check has shown the difficulty has been with the entire linode data center, as linode.com (the host for the web server for this site) has also been inaccessible. A check just now with linode shows a report by linode staff that a DOS attack has been in play against the data center, likely having nothing to do with this site. They are taking care of it, and hopefully all will be well soon. Linode has been a very reliable and high quality service, consistently, for the many years I've been with them, so this type of thing is very unusual, but they are on top of it.

Brazilians who post racist abuse online may see their words blown up and pasted onto billboards near their houses. The campaign is called "Virtual racism, real consequences" and it's backed by Criola, a civil rights organisation run by Afro-Brazilian women. The group collects comments from Facebook or Twitter and uses geolocation tools to find out where the people who have posted them live. They then buy billboard space nearby and post the comments in huge letters, although names and photos are pixelated.Criola's founder Jurema Werneck says the campaign is intended to encourage people to speak out and report racism. How Comcast wants to meter the Internet Post Date: 2015-10-27 15:53:10 by Willie Green

NEW YORK (AP) This year marked a turning point for Comcast, the cable giant: It now has more Internet than TV customers. And it's trying out how to charge you for the amount of data you use, much the way Verizon and AT&T do for wireless customers. Why risk doing something that upsets customers? Most large cable companies AT&T and some smaller providers are the main exceptions offer unlimited data plans. The reason is simple. Comcast currently takes in more revenue from video customers than from Internet customers, but that's not likely to be true forever. A small but growing number of consumers are skipping cable subscriptions as hours spent watching ...

Telemarketers have been a real annoyance to everyone over the last few decades. Although the FCC is not the source of these calls, it is not uncommon for the Commission to receive consumer complaints over unwanted robocalls and telemarketers. Although there have been some attempts in the past to resolve these issues, it persists as a growing problem. Now the FCC plans to help develop technologies to block these unwanted calls going to both landline and mobile phone users. The FCC's Role The FCC's plan to encourage the development of these "do-not-disturb" technologies is fairly simple. Each week, the FCC receives numerous user complaints about telemarketers. The ...

Millions of people visiting weather.com, drudgereport.com, wunderground.com, and other popular websites were exposed to attacks that can surreptitiously hijack their computers, thanks to maliciously manipulated ads that exploit vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash and other browsing software, researchers said. The malvertising campaign worked by inserting malicious code into ads distributed by AdSpirit.de, a network that delivers ads to Drudge, Wunderground, and other third-party websites, according to a post published Thursday by researchers from security firm Malwarebytes. The ads, in turn, exploited security vulnerabilities in widely used browsers and browser plugins that install malware on ...
