Creative ditches Zen FM recording

Creative is reported to have succumbed to recording industry pressure by releasing a Firmware update for a couple of its players which disables the FM recording feature. The firmware modification affects the company's Zen MicroPhoto and Zen Vision:M players. In the release notes, Creative gives no reasoning for the changes, simply noting, "this firmware removes your player's FM recording feature." In the past, the music industry has argued that recording audio from the radio harms music sales. More recently, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) dealt a lawsuit to XM Satellite Radio, alleging XM was guilty of "massive wholesale infringement" which was ...

The most popular antivirus applications on the market are rendered useless by around 80 percent of new malware, according to AusCERT. At a security breakfast hosted by e-mail security firm Messagelabs in Sydney on Wednesday, the general manager of the Australian Computer Emergency Response Team (AusCERT), Graham Ingram, told the audience that popular desktop antivirus applications "don't work". "At the point we see it as a CERT, which is very early on -- the most popular brands of antivirus on the market … have an 80 percent miss rate. That is not a detection rate that is a miss rate. "So if you are running these pieces of software, eight out of 10 pieces of ...

Yahoo harnesses users’ collective knowledge

Yahoo Search logoYahoo will on Wednesday set out plans to harness the collective knowledge and interests of its 400m regular users to develop the next generation of search technology and narrow the gap with internet juggernaut Google. The vision, to be outlined at the company’s analyst day in San Francisco, comes as Google’s growing lead in search and its steady encroachment in e-commerce and other forms of internet activity have touched off a scramble among rivals. Terry Semel, Yahoo’s chairman, revealed last week that the company had discussed merging at least part of its search business with Microsoft, though those talks were abandoned. But in an effort to leap ahead ...

Starforce enforces DRM by instant reboot (without warning)

Despite all the problems DRM has been causing lately, it seems like companies involved in copy protection just keep trying to create more dangerous copy protections. Originally, they were more of a nuisance causing compatibility issues, installing wanted software, etc. Next came Sony Rootkits which used cloaking to hide its DRM processes and files, but with the side affect of being able to cloak spyware & viruses, thus causing a serious security risk. More recently, the Settec Alpha-DVD protection has been reported to cause DVD writers to malfunction. Now, Futuremark has uncovered a very dangerous anti-piracy system Starforce is now using. This copy protection system installs a driver ...

VEIL technology and it's role in US analog hole legislation

heystoopid used our news submit to tell us about one persons investigation attempt of technology named in an upcoming US legislation concerning the analog hole. The Sensenbrenner - Conyers analog hole bill to be specific. This bill would require almost all analog video devices to implement two DRM schemes called Copy Generation Management System Analogue or CGMS-A and Video Encoded Invisible Light or VEIL. CGMS-A is a copy protection mechanism that around here we might more easily recognize as the Broadcast Flag and we have been reading about it for some time already. However, VEIL technology is relatively new and maybe you have not heard of it yet. Admittedly, this is an interesting ...
