Tired Of Telemarketers? So Is The FCC
Post Date: 2015-10-22 08:42:47 by Willie Green
1 Comments
Telemarketers have been a real annoyance to everyone over the last few decades. Although the FCC is not the source of these calls, it is not uncommon for the Commission to receive consumer complaints over unwanted robocalls and telemarketers. Although there have been some attempts in the past to resolve these issues, it persists as a growing problem. Now the FCC plans to help develop technologies to block these unwanted calls going to both landline and mobile phone users. The FCC's Role The FCC's plan to encourage the development of these "do-not-disturb" technologies is fairly simple. Each week, the FCC receives numerous user complaints about telemarketers. The ...

My browser visited Weather.com and all I got was this lousy malware [also Drudge, Wunderground, Yahoo] [Full Thread]

Millions of people visiting weather.com, drudgereport.com, wunderground.com, and other popular websites were exposed to attacks that can surreptitiously hijack their computers, thanks to maliciously manipulated ads that exploit vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash and other browsing software, researchers said. The malvertising campaign worked by inserting malicious code into ads distributed by AdSpirit.de, a network that delivers ads to Drudge, Wunderground, and other third-party websites, according to a post published Thursday by researchers from security firm Malwarebytes. The ads, in turn, exploited security vulnerabilities in widely used browsers and browser plugins that install malware on ...

Microsoft's Windows 10 Torrent-U-Like updates GULP DOWN your precious bandwidth

Feel like your network bandwidth is slipping away? Windows 10 could be the culprit. Microsoft’s new desktop operating system has employed a torrent-style approach to sharing updates with your fellow Windows 10 users. The OS employs a system of sharing updates between users’ PCs and across their own networks rather than download direct from Microsoft. The system is called Windows Update Delivery Optimisation, or WUDO. WUDO came to light as people began downloading Windows 10 – released on Wednesday – to their machines. It’s been causing surprises. According to Microsoft, WUDO lets you get updates when there’s limited or unreliable connection to the internet. ...

Washington — Under government pressure, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV agreed Friday to recall 1.4 million vehicles that can be cyber-hacked remotely — as Congress, automakers and regulators are raising increasing concerns about vehicle communications. The first-of-its-kind callback came just days after a magazine report showed hackers could wirelessly take control of some functions of a Jeep Cherokee. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it will open an investigation into the recall to ensure all vehicles that could be affected are covered. “Opening this investigation will allow NHTSA to better assess the effectiveness of the remedy proposed by Fiat ...

Here's The FCC's Plan To Narrow 'Digital Divide' For Better Internet Access

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is emphasizing the critical role of the Internet in modern life, communication, education and employment. The Federal Communications Commission is redefining broadband access as a new "lifeline" feature in addition to the landline and wireless phone access many low-income American familes already receive. For 30 years, low-income households have received assistance from the federal government in paying their phone bills. Now, Wheeler is proposing the same subsidized access to advanced telecommunications services, ensuring that all Americans can afford broadband Internet service. "Broadband is every bit as important today as plain old phone ...

A really dumb question from a 5/8 blind guy

Okay - this is really dumb - and kind-of embarrassing. Computers have audio jacks - right? Sure they do. They USED to be LABELED as to what they are. Right? And they still ARE labeled (sometimes) with little itsy bitsy symbols molded into the black plastic. These symbols cannot easily be read and understood - (except by blind people). So that is why - luckily - someone, about 35 years ago - came up with a color scheme for the jacks (plugs). 'Red is this, green is that' - etc. Now you might THINK that someone would have memorizedthat color scheme in the past 37 years. Ah! But you would be wrong. I'm trying to wire up this new computer into my mess - and I realize that I am ...

Google’s self-driving cars are getting into accidents

A handful of autonomous cars have been in accidents during test runs in California, posing a key question for the future of driverless vehicles: Are they actually any safer? Four of the about 50 self-driving cars in California have been in accidents since September, the Associated Press reported Monday. Three of the four cars were Google’s Lexus SUVs. The fourth was a Delphi Automotive car. Driverless cars have been hailed as a technology with the potential to improve safety by removing human error from roads. Two accidents took place while the cars were driving, but for the other two, humans behind the wheel had control, according to the AP. Under California law, collision reports ...

Debian 8.0 'Jessie' is out and even Microsoft is celebrating

The wait is over. Debian 8.0—“Jessie”—will be released on April 25, after a nearly two-year development cycle for the next release of this long-standing Linux distribution. Microsoft is even throwing Debian a birthday party, complete with cake. Sure, it’s basically just an advertisement for Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing platform, but it’s still amusing. Software, security, and desktop updates As usual—with every Linux distribution, really—the biggest changes you’ll notice are package updates. The majority of the packages included with Debian have had their versions bumped to the latest ones. From desktop environments and desktop ...

Google Maps hides an image of the Android robot urinating on Apple
Post Date: 2015-04-24 09:35:46 by Willie Green

A small patch of terrain in Google Maps just south of the Pakistani city of Rawlpindi has been found to contain a bizarre image of the Android robot urinating on the Apple logo. The image, apparently an Easter egg added by a Google employee or data provider, remains visible on Google Maps itself. While some parts of Google’s mapping data are user-editable, the base terrain information isn’t, suggesting that whoever inserted the image has privileged access – and perhaps thought it wouldn’t be found. The image in its original location. Unsurprisingly, the real terrain underneath bears no resemblance to the picture, (loosely) adapted from a famous bootleg of Bill ...

Welcome to the front lines of the battle for your Facebook news feed. Vincent Harris wants details, and he’s not getting them. The 26-year-old political consultant is quizzing two Facebook guys who’ve showed up at the Austin headquarters of his media firm, and all he’s getting back is a pat lecture about the value of social networking for online campaigns. Harris and the dozen staffers gathered in his company’s conference room don’t exactly need to be convinced: This is what they do. And by the time the 2016 presidential campaign is over, these twentysomethings expect to be paid millions of dollars for doing it well. They already spend all day everyday on the ...

Justin Cheng, Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil and Jure Leskovec submitted the paper Antisocial Behavior in Online Discussion Communities [PDF] in early April, which details the findings from an 18-month study of banned commenters over three high-traffic communities: news giant cnn.com, political hub breitbart.com and the vocal gaming communities at ign.com. The study, which was partly-funded by Google and had the cooperation of the Disqus commenting ecosphere, compared ...

Those that have not been developed in China must be registered with the government, putting at risk corporate secrets, secure emails and encrypted data. New smoking gun further ties NSA to omnipotent “Equation Group” hackers What are the chances unrelated state-sponsored projects were both named "BACKSNARF"? Researchers from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab have uncovered more evidence tying the US National Security Agency to a nearly omnipotent group of hackers who operated undetected for at least 14 years. The Kaspersky researchers once again stopped short of saying the hacking collective they dubbed Equation Group was the handiwork of the NSA, saying only that the operation had to have been sponsored by a nation-state with nearly unlimited resources to dedicate to the project. Still, they heaped new findings on top of a ...

HBO Go Blocked on PS4 by Comcast, Just Like on PS3

Much like the PlayStation 3 version of the app, HBO Go on PlayStation 4 is blocked if you're a Comcast Xfinity customer. Sony announced the much-anticipated arrival of the HBO Go app on PS4 earlier this week. Those who had been hoping the PS4 version would bring a resolution to the problem that has existed on PS3 for a year were sorely disappointed; Comcast continues to prevent its customers from accessing to the streaming service despite competitors like AT&T, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, and many others allowing it. Comcast has yet to offer a satisfactory answer for the lack of support. As Techdirt notes, customer complaints over the past year--since the PS3 got HBO ...

Just suppose that I wanted to create a machine that would boot from a USB flash drive - a relatively big flash drive - 32gb to 64gb - or whatever is required. And I wanted this thing to boot either Win7 or XP. Anybody here have any experience with such an experience? FYI - I am planning to create this thing on a new Zotac 'ZBox' with a Celeron processor and 4GB of memory (which I have - the memory - not the Zbox). So what I'm basically trying to do is create a 'disk-less' computer. Shouldn't be fraught with problems - Eh? Thanks for any help / insight! ZBOX 1320-U:

Spies Can Track You Just by Watching Your Phone’s Power Use

Smartphone users might balk at letting a random app like Candy Crush or Shazam track their every move via GPS. But researchers have found that Android phones reveal information about your location to every app on your device through a different, unlikely data leak: the phone’s power consumption. Researchers at Stanford University and Israel’s defense research group Rafael have created a technique they call PowerSpy, which they say can gather information about an Android phone’s geolocation merely by tracking its power use over time. That data, unlike GPS or Wi-Fi location tracking, is freely available to any installed app without a requirement to ask the user’s ...

Super-cookie crumbles: Verizon vows to kill off hated zombie stalkersThis time opt-out actually means opt-out, we're told Verizon has backed down over its fingerprinting of subscribers using so-called immortal "super cookies." In 2012, the US mobile telco started injecting unique identifying headers (UIDHs) into every HTTP request users made to websites via the Verizon network. This allowed sneaky ad agencies to recognize people as they moved from site to site, and display ads supposedly tailored to individuals' interests.
