Virginia Democrats Fight To Abolish Single-Sex Bathrooms in Public Schools Post Date: 2022-12-22 16:15:49 by Charles_Byrd

Virginia Democrats are fighting to abolish single-sex bathrooms in public schools and keep parents in the dark when their children assume different genders at school. Democrats on the state legislature's rules commission in a 5-4 vote on Monday rejected Gov. Glenn Youngkin's (R.) plan to protect same-sex spaces and increase parents' role in education. If the plan is adopted, administrators and teachers would have to seek parents' consent before referring to children by different names or pronouns. The plan would also preserve sex-specific sports teams, locker rooms, and bathrooms. Click for Full Text!

Five Must-Know Facts About the Disastrous New Omnibus Post Date: 2022-12-22 15:46:14 by Charles_Byrd

Just as I predicted back in October, Congress pushed its discretionary spending deadline back by one week, from December 16 to December 23. This comes as no surprise as congressional leadership is once again trying to ram through a massive omnibus bill before the year ends. The Friday deadline gives leadership leverage, as they threaten a partial government shutdown that might keep members of Congress in Washington over Christmas. Vote as youre told, or youre not going home is the name of this game. Yet in the same vein that Congress managed to punt on appropriations when they were due on September 30, and again on December 16, Congress could punt on appropriations once more. ...

The California Court of Appeals upheld two injunctions against state-mandated diversity quotas on corporate boards earlier this month, according to court documents. California has passed several laws which require corporations to hire at least one director to fulfill a quota based on categories such as sex, race or sexual orientation. The appellate court rejected the California secretary of States emergency request to lift two injunctions issued by trial courts which claimed that the laws are unconstitutional. Click for Full Text!
Congress Yet Again Fails To Pass Crack Cocaine Sentencing Reforms Post Date: 2022-12-21 20:53:23 by Charles_Byrd

A once-promising bipartisan bill to erase the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine failed to make it into a year-end omnibus spending bill winding through Congress, likely dooming efforts to pass crack cocaine sentencing reform for yet another legislative session. Criminal justice advocates have been working for decades to roll back draconian crack cocaine laws passed by Congress in the 1980s. Those laws set the penalties for crack cocaine offenses at 100 times greater than equivalent powder cocaine offenses, which resulted in monstrously long and racially disparate sentences. In 2010 Congress passed a law reducing the sentencing ratio to 181, and advocates hoped to ...

Dems want $575 million for 'family planning' where population growth 'threatens biodiversity' Post Date: 2022-12-21 20:43:04 by Charles_Byrd

The omnibus spending bill currently under consideration in Congress includes a minimum of $575 million towards family planning and reproductive health, including in areas where population growth threatens biodiversity, according to the text of the bill. The $1.7 trillion, more than 4,000-page-long spending bill unveiled Tuesday represents the federal governments budget for the coming fiscal year. Conservatives have criticized the spending bill for pouring enormous sums of money into left-leaning projects through earmarks, the process in which a member of Congress agrees to sign a spending bill on the condition that it includes funding for one of ...

Congress Misses Another Chance To Correct Blatantly Unjust Crack Penalties Post Date: 2022-12-21 19:32:10 by Charles_Byrd

As a senator in 1986, President Joe Biden wrote the bill that established an irrational sentencing disparity between the smoked and snorted forms of cocaine, which he later called "a big mistake" that "trapped an entire generation." This week Congress squandered yet another opportunity to correct Biden's big mistake, which mandated especially severe punishment for crack offenders based on an arbitrary distinction with no scientific basis. The omnibus spending bill that was released early Tuesday morning did not include legislation addressing crack cocaine penalties. Republicans who had been open to that proposal reportedly balked after Attorney General Merrick ...
A New FBI Building Would Cost Billions. Do We Even Need One? Post Date: 2022-12-21 19:08:22 by Charles_Byrd

Early Tuesday morning, the Senate finally released its omnibus spending bill, which would fund the government through September of next year. The deadline to pass the bill actually passed on Friday, requiring a one-week stopgap bill to avoid a government shutdown. Part of the delay stemmed from disagreements over where to build a new location for the FBI's headquarters. But at a time of record debt and continuing trillion-dollar deficits, it's worth asking whether the bureau even needs a new building. Click for Full Text!
The January 6 Committee's Suggested Charges Against Trump May Be Hard To Prove Post Date: 2022-12-21 19:06:24 by Charles_Byrd

The select congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol on Monday recommended that the Justice Department consider half a dozen criminal charges against Donald Trump based on his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. While those criminal referrals are not binding, they suggest some of the challenges that prosecutors would face if they decided there is enough evidence to charge the former president. Four of the potential crimes include mens rea requirements that may be difficult to satisfy, especially since the prosecution would have to prove those elements beyond a reasonable doubt. The other two possibilities involve ...

In Maricopa County, Arizona, 63 percent of black children are investigated by the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) by the time they turn 18, according to a joint report published this month by ProPublica and NBC News. For white children, the number is only 33 percent. One black mother was investigated by the Arizona DCS after she sought medical care when her daughter fell off a couch. Another woman had her children taken for over a year after she left them home alone for 20 minutes. Another was investigated after facing an unfounded accusation that she left her autistic child in the car while she went inside a store. Click for Full Text!

Warning shot: House conservatives threaten revenge if GOP senators vote for Pelosi spending Post Date: 2022-12-20 16:45:44 by Charles_Byrd

A group of House conservatives is promising to oppose and stymie the legislative priorities of any Republican senator who votes in favor of the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill this week. The warning shot, delivered via a letter from 13 conservatives Monday night, comes amid rising tensions between Republicans in the House and Senate. In just two weeks, Republicans will control the U.S. House of Representatives, yet passage of the spending bill would severely curtail their efforts to conduct meaningful oversight and hold the Biden administration accountable.
