Planned Parenthood, alongside the American Civil Liberties Union, separately announced on Wednesday that they are suing the Idaho attorney general's office due to an interpretation of the state law punishing medical professionals for referring patients to out-of-state abortion services. Last week, Idaho's attorney general, Raúl Labrador, stated in his legal opinion that state law forbids the "provision" and "promotion" of abortion pills as well as referring women "across state lines" to abortion services. A Kansas bill that would bar transgender people from using public bathrooms or changing their name or gender on their driver's license cleared the GOP-controlled Legislature on Tuesday by margins suggesting backers could override Democratic Gov. Laura Kellys expected veto. The state Senate voted 28-12 with one vote more than a two-thirds majority that would be needed to overturn any veto, giving final passage to an earlier House-passed version of the legislation and sending it to the governor. The North Dakota House of Representatives fell seven votes short Monday of overriding a veto by Gov. Doug Burgum of a bill that would prohibit public schools and state agencies from requiring the use of pronouns that don't correspond to an individual's biological sex. The GOP holds veto-proof majorities in the House and Senate, and the Senate overruled the veto Friday with a 37-9 vote, meaning the House needed two-thirds, or 63 votes, in a chamber with an 82-12 edge in Republicans over Democrats to override the veto of Senate Bill 2231. But 24 Republicans and all 12 Democrats voted against the override, with the final vote 56-36. Click for Full Text!

Israel authorized on Sunday setting up a national guard under far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who has said it would focus on Arab unrest, while political rivals accused him of setting up a sectarian "militia." The previous government had begun moves to set up an auxiliary police force to tackle internal political violence following pro-Palestinian protests in mixed Jewish-Arab areas during the Gaza Strip war of May 2021. That government fell before the force was finalized. Click for Full Text!

The Obscure Maritime Law That Ruins Your Commute Post Date: 2023-04-02 21:55:44 by Charles_Byrd

What with everything going on in the world, stewing over an obscure, century‐old maritime law might seem odd. But the Jones Act really does warrant such consternation. Its not just a terrible law that hurts you, me, and everyone we knowespecially if they live in Puerto Rico or drive to work on the East Coast. Its also a cautionary tale against government industrial policies, which can have unintended consequences far beyond higher prices or budget overrun. The Jones Act, formally known as Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, was ostensibly intended to ensure adequate domestic shipbuilding capacity and a ready supply of merchant mariners and ships ...

This Year's Farm Bill Threatens To Be a Bigger Monster Than Ever Post Date: 2023-03-29 21:52:33 by Charles_Byrd

In many ways, the farm bill up for consideration this year in Congress embodies all that is wrong with American lawmaking. It's a massive piece of legislation, combining unrelated matters to commit the U.S. government to spending mind-bending amounts of money at a single go. Passed roughly every five years, farm bills are less about legislating in any deliberative sense than they are about lawmakers packaging a trillion-plus dollars of goodies and committing taxpayers to fund them for years to comeand then doing it over and over again. "Every five years, Congress passes legislation that sets national agriculture, nutrition, conservation, and forestry policy, commonly ...

Blinken Wants $2 Billion to Rival China’s Belt-and-Road Initiative Post Date: 2023-03-28 01:02:34 by Charles_Byrd

On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged the Senate to authorize $2 billion in spending for infrastructure projects globally, but seemed to be rebuffed by Jim Risch, a prominent Republican senator from Idaho who expressed skepticism about where such money could be found. In wake of a Republican-led drive to reduce government expenditure in order to alleviate the federal budget deficit, Rischs questions about the feasibility of Blinkens suggestion indicated the latest obstacle in longstanding U.S. government attempts to set up a rival to communist Chinas $1-trillion Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Federal Courts Clash Over Financial Watchdog's Constitutionality Post Date: 2023-03-27 21:47:24 by Charles_Byrd

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit on Thursday ruled that the way in which Congress funds the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is, in fact, constitutional. The ruling contradicts an opinion published in October by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, which held that the agency's funding "violates the Constitution's structural separation of powers." The Supreme Court, which had already agreed to review the 5th Circuit case, will likely resolve the circuit split next year. The argument against the CFPB's constitutionality is simple. The Constitution's appropriations clause requires that monies drawn from the treasury be authorized by ...
