When Strong Encryption Isn't Enough to Protect Our Privacy“None of the claims of what comsec works is to be taken saltless: Tor, OTR, ZTRP are lures.” —Cryptome 3, Dec. 30, 2014In the aftermath of Edward Snowden's disclosures, the American public has been deluged with talking points that advocate strong encryption as a universal solution for protecting our privacy. Unfortunately the perception of strong encryption as a panacea is flawed. In this report I’ll explain why strong encryption isn’t enough and then present some operational guidelines which can be used to enhance your online privacy. Nothing worthwhile is easy. Especially sidestepping the ...

Left Panics over Peer-Reviewed Climate Paper’s Threat to Global Warming Alarmism [Full Thread]

You’ve heard it said that the science is settled. And it’s true. It is settled–settled beyond the possibility of any dispute. A fundamental, inescapable, indubitable bedrock scientific principle is that lousy theories make lousy predictions. Climate forecasts are lousy, therefore it is settled science that they must necessarily be based on lousy theories. And lousy theories should not be trusted. Put it this way. Climate forecasts, of the type relied upon by the IPCC and over governmental entities, stink. They are no good. They have been promising ever increasing temperatures for decades, but the observations have been more or less steady. This must mean–it is ...

I Need To Buy A New Computer... (Suggestions?)

The Intel Atom 2 (a Foxconn 525) sizzled completely. The (offline) Intel Atom 1 (Foxconn 330) has been working just fine - but the keyboard sizzled. With a new keyboard it is working just fine. But hey - a new machine is needed. I've bought only one AMD (an old Athlon) in my life. (years ago.) Worked great. Until it no longer did (at all). And the very ancient Celeron D (on which I'm posting this) is a trooper - and still working at this moment. So I'm contemplating a 3Ghz-and-up AMD - for low bucks. Anybody got any ideas? On reputable mail-oder places - not just machines. Eh? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

'Cloud' over Mars leaves scientists baffled

Plumes seen reaching high above the surface of Mars are causing a stir among scientists studying the atmosphere on the Red Planet. Read more at: http://phys.org/news/2015-02-cloud-mars-scientists- baffled.html#jCp On two separate occasions in March and April 2012, amateur astronomers reported definite plume-like features developing on the planet. The plumes were seen rising to altitudes of over 250 km above the same region of Mars on both occasions. By comparison, similar features seen in the past have not exceeded 100 km. "At about 250 km, the division between the atmosphere and outer space is very thin, so the reported plumes are extremely unexpected," says Agustin ...

New Rules For Phone Unlocking In U.S. Go Live...

New Rules For Phone Unlocking In U.S. Go Live, Here’s What You Need To Know The business of unlocking mobile devices has never been particularly straightforward, with the rules seeming to change from carrier to carrier, at the drop of a hat. But new unlocking standards approved by the CTIA back in 2013 offer a degree of uniformity, and from today, all major U.S. carriers will comply with the revised terms. Find out what this means for you and your devices after the fold! In the past, many have hit a brick wall when trying to avail an unlock by any means, and with the days of software unlocking all-but over for most high-end handsets, the card-holding carriers will now be much more ...

Q: Since the Earth is spinning and orbiting and whatnot, are we experiencing time wrong because of time dilation?

Physicist: A little! The movement of Earth, as well as the Earth’s gravity, change how much time we experience compared to other objects in the universe. If we were to occasionally compare our clocks to clocks in tight orbits around black holes or neutron stars we’d find they run slower than ours, and if we compare with clocks floating deep in the middle of nowhere we’d find that we’d find that those clocks run a little faster than ours. However, there’s no “true” time to experience; you can never experience time wrong. Time is relative which means that we can compare how time is passing for any two things, but there’s no ultimate “clock of the ...

CERN To Attempt ‘Big Bang’ In March, Stephen Hawking Issues Warning

CERN is due to re-open the large hadron collider in March of 2015 in order to recreate the big bang, despite warnings from top scientists such as Stephen Hawking and Neil de Grasse Tyson. Allnewspipeline.com reports: Dr. Stephen Hawking recently warned that the reactivation in March of CERN’s large hadron collider could pose grave dangers to our planet…the ultimate reality check we are warned. Hawking has come straight out and said the ‘God particle’ found by CERN “could destroy the universe” leaving time and space collapsed as shared in the 2nd video. Is CERN the most dangerous thing in the cosmos that could lead to the ultimate destruction of the Earth and ...

We’ve all heard of the claim of “settled science” when it comes to global warming/climate change, and we’ve all heard of the “Big Bang Theory”, and I’m not just talking about the popular TV show. The scientific theory goes all the way back to 1927. This is an artist’s concept of the metric expansion of space, where space (including hypothetical non-observable portions of the universe) is represented at each time by the circular sections. Note on the left the dramatic expansion (not to scale) occurring in the inflationary epoch, and at the center the expansion acceleration. The scheme is decorated with WMAP images on the left and with the ...

The fiddling with temperature data is the biggest science scandal ever

When future generations look back on the global-warming scare of the past 30 years, nothing will shock them more than the extent to which the official temperature records – on which the entire panic ultimately rested – were systematically “adjusted” to show the Earth as having warmed much more than the actual data justified. Two weeks ago, under the headline “How we are being tricked by flawed data on global warming”, I wrote about Paul Homewood, who, on his Notalotofpeopleknowthat blog, had checked the published temperature graphs for three weather stations in Paraguay against the temperatures that had originally been recorded. In each instance, the ...

Eternal life could be achieved by procedure to lengthen chromosomes
Post Date: 2015-02-04 08:32:22 by cranky

The key to eternal life could be a procedure to lengthen chromosomes. The procedure would allow scientists to lengthen telomeres, the protective caps that are on the end of chromosomes and shorten with age. The telomeres protect chromosomes from getting damage as cells divide and grow. But as they do, they slowly become shorter and eventually are unable to protect the chromosomes. When that happens, they are liable to deteriorate — thought to be a key part of the ageing process. The new process allows scientists to lengthen the telomeres, effectively turning back the biological clock and making the chromosomes — and the people that are made out of them — younger. When ...

Low gas prices, incentives change math for electric cars

Low gas prices, incentives change math for electric cars DETROIT - Drivers trying to calculate whether it's practical to own an electric car are facing a new math. U.S. gas prices have fallen more than $1 per gallon over the last 12 months, to a national average of $2.06, according to AAA. That makes electric cars -- with their higher prices tags -- a tougher sell. "Fuel savings are not top of mind to many consumers right now," says John Krafcik, president of the car shopping site TrueCar.com. Automakers have responded by slashing thousands of dollars off the sticker price of electrics. Incentives averaged $4,159 per electric car last year, up 68 percent from 2013, ...

How to reduce the amount of air in a football without letting any air out

Just fill the ball with warm humid indoor air, then when it temperature-equalizes with the 25°F cooler outdoor air on your AFC Championship playing field some of the water vapor in the ball will condense into water, leaving less air in the ball, solving the great mystery: how did the footballs used by the Championship winning New England Patriots show 12.5 psi of inflation pressure in the official pre-game check but only 10.5 psi when checked at halftime? There is also a decrease in pressure due to the cooling of the molecules that remain gaseous. Those air molecules are not zipping around as fast as they were so they exert less outward pressure on the ball. But according to the ...

Mysterious cosmic radiowaves captured live for first time...

A gigantic but fleeting burst of radio waves has been caught in the act for the first time, helping to narrow down the vast array of things that might cause them. Figuring out what these fast radio bursts – sometimes called blitzars – are or where they come from could help answer some of the biggest cosmological questions. Blitzars last about a millisecond but give off as much energy as the sun does in a million years, all seemingly in a tight band of radio-frequency waves. Their source is a mystery, but whatever causes them must be huge, cataclysmic and up to 5.5 billion light years away, says Emily Petroff of Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia. A top contender is ...

....Cannabis does not cure cancer

Conclusions There’s a lot of interesting research about the role of cannabinoid receptors in cancer and whether targeting them with cannabinoid agonists from marijuana or other natural sources, synthetic agonists, or endocannibinoids will be a useful tool to add to the armamentarium of anticancer therapies. From what we know now, it is quite clear that cannabis does not cure cancer, at least not by itself and certainly not ingested or smoked as marijuana or ingested or applied topically as hemp oil. Even in purified form, naturally- derived or synthetic cannabinoid agonists show relatively modest antitumor activity in preclinical models, which means that they will have to be combined ...

Scientific Study Reveals Conspiracy Theorists The Most Sane Of All

If you’re a conspiracy theorist, then you’re crazy, right? That’s been the common belief for years, but recent studies prove that just the opposite is true. Researchers — psychologists and social scientists, mostly — in the U.S. and United Kingdom say data indicate that, contrary to those mainstream media stereotypes, “conspiracy theorists” appear to be more sane than people who accept official versions of controversial and contested events. The most recent study was published in July 2013 by psychologists Michael J. Wood and Karen M. Douglas of the University of Kent in the UK. Entitled “‘What about Building 7?’ A Social Psychological ...

Facebook Atlas: Giving Advertisers Invasive Maps of Your Life

Facebook has quietly introduced a new service for advertisers called “Facebook Atlas,” and we’re giving it a “thumbs down” because it’s not good for your privacy. Like an atlas, it offers a collection of maps, but these maps show the whereabouts and activities of Internet users — whether Facebook subscribers or not. These detailed maps are chock full of tidbits about the online and offline lives of consumers — and your life is most likely in this collection, whether you like it or not. Facebook refers to Atlas as “People-based marketing,” which might lead you to think we, the people, are in charge of its mapping process. But we’re not. ...

CRACKPOT CLIMATE CHANGE CLAIM OF THE WEEK: GLOBAL WARMING MEANS AIRPLANES WON'T TAKE OFF
Post Date: 2014-11-28 19:23:14 by out damned spot

Airplanes of the future will have to carry lighter loads more often thanks to global warming, according to two scientists at Columbia University, New York. They reached their conclusion by creating models which predicted that by 2060 there will be more warm days but no commensurate technological advances in the aviation industry. The two scientists, Coffel and Horton, looked at a phenomenon known amongst pilots as ‘density altitude’, which affects a plane’s ability to take off. Essentially, on hotter days the air is less dense, making it harder to get a plane airborne. It is a particular problem at airports with short runways, as the planes will take longer to lift off. ...

A Novel Theory of Global Warning On Venus

Everyone knows that the ridiculous temperature on Venus (467 Centigrade at the surface) is a direct result of runaway global warning. With a CO2 content of over 96%, it is a cautionary tale of what could happen on Earth if we keep pumping CO2 into our atmosphere by way of carbon belching electric plants and smoke yielding transportation pods (car, bus, train and plane.) Why we all know that we face a Venusian future if we don’t stop our anthropogenic carbon profligacy. BUT WAIT … Is there another explanation for why Venus is hot … an explanation that claims to completely debunk the CO2 based theory of global warning. Why yes NAAoids everywhere … there is. Fortunately, no people were aboard and no one was injured. The rocket is designed by Orbital Sciences Corporation, under a contract with NASA. It's a two-stage launch vehicle that can shepherd up to 6,120kg or about 13,500 pounds, to the International Space Station. The first launch took places from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia in April 21, 2013. No personnel were in the area, and there appear only to be damages to today's launch site at Wallops and ...

Vampires of the Animal Kingdom

Long before the 1819 publication of The Vampyre by John Polidori, and before Bram Stoker popularized vampires with the novel Dracula in 1897, humans have been spinning tales of creatures which drink blood. Some tales were of mythological beings, some were perhaps based on real people who engaged in cannibalism and blood drinking, and many are based on real animals or embellishments of real animals. Mythological creatures such as Pishachas, ghouls, Estries, kappas, and striges are just a few examples out of many hundreds. Even as recently as 1995, new blood-drinking creatures have been reported and entered the pages of cryptozoology, such as the Chupacabra. Real-life creatures such as ...
