June 15 (Bloomberg) -- Matthew Simmons, founder of the Ocean Energy Institute, talks with Bloomberg's Lori Rothman about BP Plc's oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico and his view that the use of a "small-bore nuclear device" is now the "only option" to stop the flow of oil. (Source: Bloomberg)

A local Conservative radio talk show host, nuclear weapons designer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, professor of electrical engineering at UC Berkeley, and the guy responsible for figuring out how to put out the well fires and then cap the oil wells left by Saddam in Kuwait, says no. He says an attempt wouldn't work, and most likely would make the situation much worse.

from what I read, the Russians did this a few times to close natural gas wells, but all were on land. The fear is that a nuclear weapon could collapse the entire shelf leading to a much bigger release of oil.

Being a Republican means you get to choose your own reality.

Not to mention that tiny issue of radiation in the Gulf for anywhere from a couple of decades to several centuries.

'We had to destroy the village in order to save it' comes to mind.

Just 10 days prior to the explosion, the Obama administration’s regulators gave the oil rig a pass, and last year the Obama administration granted BP a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) exemption for its drilling operation.

That's exactly what he says.

You must be talking about Bill Wattenberg. He's a genious at logistical problem solving. He loves to use those railway flatbeds in various scenarios such as dropping supplies into areas from ultra high altitudes, and slowing the flow of Folsom Lake when the dam gates were stuck open.

Putting out the fires wasn't the major problem, in fact Wattenberg had some wells set on fire to mitigate the spillage.

Like most... probably because BP isn't giving out all of the details.

I spelled his last name wrong.... it's Wattenburg. I've listened to him for years although not recently. He does his program most of the time from a little studio he built in the town of Greenville in Plumas County near Lake Almanor. I think there's about 2000 people living there.

He should be designated a national treasure.

I agree.

Not only is he brilliant, but he does what he does because he loves finding solutions to problems. He often works for free and turns down payment when offered. Imagine a banker or hedge fund manager doing that.
