With the holiday season upon us, and the end of the year fast approaching, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 3326—the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2010. With the passage of this bill, NRA-ILA wraps up its appropriations work for the year.

Our efforts on the huge spending bill were rewarded with the restoration of a longstanding rider to protect M-1 carbines, M-1 Garands, M-14s, .22 caliber rifles, and others from being destroyed.

This language also includes a prohibition on the destruction of small arms ammunition and components, and a response to the short-lived concern over destruction of spent brass casings earlier this year.

Section 8019 of the bill reads: "None of the funds available to the Department of Defense may be used to demilitarize or dispose of M-1 Carbines, M-1 Garand rifles, M-14 rifles, .22 caliber rifles, .30 caliber rifles, or M-1911 pistols, or to demilitarize or destroy small arms ammunition or ammunition components that are not otherwise prohibited from commercial sale under Federal law, unless the small arms ammunition or ammunition components are certified by the Secretary of the Army or designee as unserviceable or unsafe for further use."

NRA-ILA would like to thank U.S. Representative John Murtha (D-PA) for his help in getting the rider restored and expanded.

Think I'll go to the range again this weekend.

Last week I met the firearms instructor for my city's police dept. there. He was there with his grandson. He had some very nice gear and invited me to fire all I wanted. I declined at first but he said, "Never turn down the chance to fire another man's ammo". LOL!

He pulled out some AK's, some AR's, an SKS, an M1, and several side arms.

I had this with me http://www.kel-tec-cnc.com/su16d.htm and he wanted to fire it. After he fired it he said he HAD to have one.

A very nice guy. Very pro 2nd amendment.

NRA....yeah well...better than the antis thats for sure...

I guess its kinda like fishing...

You got your elitist "fly" fisherman...crank bait and lure guys...and your weekend cane pole and worm folks...not to mention the Russian..Norweigan..and Japanese trawlers..

IMO the NRA directorship has always pretty much been the "fly fisherman" who say they represent the interests of all who fish...

You'd think they would, sooner or later, learn where their bread is buttered and who butters it...

Now if we could elect a POTUS that would allow us to purchase "overuns" from supplies with govt contracts like we used to be able to do until Slick Willy Clinton cut us off..

Or roll back the laws to prior the Kennedy assassination...there was a crisis they took full advantage of at least in the area of increasingly restrictive gun laws..

Or roll back the laws to prior the Kennedy assassination.

Which IS what should be done because it is what the Constitution intended.

The Gun Control Act of 1968 is completely and totally un-Constitutional,and should be repealed along with every law that snuck under the covers with it.

We went from the 1600's to 1968 with no gun laws, and for over 350 years this was no problem. Even convicted felons could get out of jail and legally buy a gun because they had served their time and now they were free and the Bill of Rights applied to them just like it did everybody else.

Suddenly it was a "national emergency" in the early 1960's,and now there are whole bureaucracies built up around it.

It did look a lot like this but I still don't know. I don't remember.

It get's confusing because the M-1 Carbine is also sometimes referred to as a M-1,and so is the semi-auto civilian version of the M-14,but it has the modified "A" behind it instead of Carbine or Garand.

In other words, the civilian version of the M-14 is called a M1A,and that is probably what the guy had. They are good rifles and are accurate, but they aren't in the same league as the M-1 Garand.

In fact,I would rather have a metric FN-FAL than a M1A. The FAL isn't as accurate do to a truly shitty trigger and poor sights, but it is much sturdier and more reliable than the M1A.

I bought a Kel Tec P11 years ago and it impressed me, so I bought more from Kel Tec.

The P11 of course isn't accurate at all past a certain range, but it's been as reliable as any I've ever owned. Never jammed or misfired.

I love the su16. Overall very impressed with Kel Tec.

www.freedom1791.com/

Unless she is an experienced shooter that is used to carrying everyday, don't.

Get her a snub-nosed 22LR revolver and take the rear sight off and file down all the rough or sharp edges on the front sight, making it round and smooth so it won't snag on anything.

One I recommend is the Taurus Ultra-Lite 9 shot 22 LR snub nose revolver. Specifically, this one. I would also round off the sharp edges on the hammer if it were me.

www.taurus-handguns.com/i...940029UL_M94__22LR_2.aspx

Load that sucker up with 9 CCI "Stinger" hollowpoints and it becomes a effective self-defense weapon. If you shoot somebody in the eye socket,it makes no difference if you were shooting a 22 than if you were shooting a 44 magnum. All you can kill them is dead.

AND....since it is also true that a miss with a 22 is just as effective as a miss with a 44 Magnum, this makes the 22 more attractive because she is less likely to miss. She is less likely to miss because she can afford to buy 22 caliber ammo a thousand rounds at a time to practice with, and this means she will be more familiar and comfortable with the gun and she will know where it shoots when she pulls the trigger.

PLUS...it is very light which means she is more likely to carry it with her when she leaves the house,AND it doesn't have a safety she has to remember to disengage under pressure before she can fire it. Revolvers are the original "point and click" devices. You just point them and keep pulling the trigger until it starts clicking.

Not to mention that you can shoot a revolver right from your coat pocket without ever taking it out,and you can't so this with a autoloader because it will jam. Not that I recommend doing this because your coat might catch fire, but there is an advantage to having a gun already in your hand if you think you might be in danger, but not confident enough about it that you are willing to pull it out and point it at somebody.

If you are bound and determined to get her something bigger than a 22,but this one for her. It's a 38 Special, but 38 Specials don't really have enough recoil or muzzle blast to bother her. Their only disadvantage over the 22 is the ammo is much more expensive.

Don't even THINK about buying a snub-nosed magnum revolver. The recoil and the muzzle blast are horrific, and you end up only getting 38 Special velocities anywhay.

Don't let the goofy look of the hammer shround throw you. If they had this version in 22 LR,that's the one I would recommend you buy. The shroud keeps the hammer from snagging on your pants or coat pocket when you go to pull the gun out.

Thanks for the advice Pete.

You really think the .22 is heavy enough?

She's not that experienced, and I like the thought of the smaller caliber. She has expressed an interest in revolvers too, her sister has a 38 S&W.

The long and hard trigger pull on the P11 is just to much for her.

You really think the .22 is heavy enough?

It's not anybody's first choice for a military assault, but if you put the bullet where it needs to go it will do the job. There is a reason the military has been issuing 22 caliber pistols with silencers since prior to WW-2.

And,as I wrote earlier,a miss with a 44 is no deadlier than a miss with a 22.

I usually carry my own 22 Taurus snub whenever I go to town. I sometimes carry a 9mm Kel-Tec or my 44 Special snubnose, but I usually carry the 22. Mostly because I always already have it with me,but I am also confident that if I need it it will do the job. I normally carry it around my yard and in my shop because I live in a rural area, and poisonous snakes aren't that unusual (I even got bit by one last summer),and I have even had to shoot rabid coons twice.

The 22 is always the one with me because it fits easily into my pocket, and it's so light you forget it's there. If I thought I seriously needed a gun on any given day,I'd be carrying my 12 gauge Ithaca pump, not a handgun.

As always, the best gun to use is the one you have with you. Due to the low recoil, the relative lack of muzzle blast, and the cheap ammunition for target practice,a 22 is the gun she is most likely to be willing to take with her every day,and it is the one she is most likely to have shot enough to be able to hit something with it.

The long and hard trigger pull on the P11 is just to much for her.

The 22 revolver is both single and doubt action. If you have the time you can cock the hammer for a easier trigger pull,or you can just pull the trigger for a double-action shot. The double action trigger pull is longer and heavier than the single action pull, but it's still a lot lighter than the trigger pull on the Kel-Tec.

As long as the perp isn't wearing lots of layers of heavy winter clothing

I don't let that worry me. I'd just put one in his eye and not worry about him anymore. With the low recoil of a 22,that's pretty easy to do,and followup shots come quicker than with a gun that does a lot of recoiling. A 22 anywhere in the head will pierce a human skull. No real need to put one through a eye socket. I'm just not the sporting gentleman I used to be.

Whatever you do get her...

Get her lots and lots and lots of RANGE TIME with the weapon of choice

Which is where the 22 really shines. Ammo cheap enough you can fire 500 rounds for what a box of 50 45 ACP would cost you,and recoil so mild she will be willing to shoot those 500 rounds.

Professional Instruction to go with it

Here is some REALLY good marital advise. DO NOT TEACH HER YOURSELF. Hire somebody else to do it. Seriously.

The 22 mag is the next thing to useless. The ammunition is insanely expensive and you can't even buy it everywhere. On top of that,it just isn't that much more powerful for short range self-defense out of a handgun barrel.

A 38 Special with swaged 146 grain hollowpoints loaded backwards over some fairly stiff loads of Unique would be a MUCH better choice. I used to load some up for friends that lived in apartments, and they would expand to 72 caliber and not penetrate 4 inches of soft pine.

Even the target grade M1-A's rarely match the accuracy of a ISSUE M1 Garand. Rack grade Garands would shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards with issue ammo.

It's a good thing he didn't offer me a BAR as a option, though. That's another one with the"reach out and touch somebody" feature, but it also has box magazines and a slow-fire option to the selector switch.
