Title: Good Samaritans Shutdown, Ticketed for Feeding Homeless During Thanksgiving Holiday

Feeding the homeless is now illegal in Atlanta and you will be ticketed and extorted unless you pay the state for permission beforehand.

Atlanta, GA — According to the official historical record, in 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For over a century, families have gathered to proclaim what they are thankful for while others have taken to shelters and charities to help those who cannot help themselves. However, thanks to the state, helping others during this most giving time is now illegal—unless you pay the government for permission.

During this Thanksgiving week, Adele Maclean and Marlon Kautz took to the streets to begin handing out food to the homeless—like they do every week. However, this time, instead of receiving praise for their services, they were issued a notice of extortion by police in the form of a citation.

“We’re looking at a citation,” Maclean said.

As WSB-TV notes, Atlanta police have been handing out the flyers across the city telling people that a permit is needed to give food to the homeless.

The fliers are being used as a warning by the police to stop people from feeding the homeless without first paying the state for permission to do so.

“I mean outrageous, right? Of all the things to be punished for, giving free food to people who are hungry?” Maclean told Channel 2’s Justin Wilfon.

The pair has been handing out food in the same spot for weeks and they told WSB-TV that they have never heard of needing a permit to feed the needy.

“It seems ridiculous to me that they would be spending their time and resources on stopping people from feeding the homeless,” said Maclean said.

Indeed, it is ridiculous considering the murders and rapes taking place in Atlanta and the low rate at which they are solved. However, issuing notices of extortion, aka citation, to people for feeding the homeless is far easier and much more profitable than catching a murderer.

As WSB-TV reports:

Wilfon contacted the city to find out what was going on. A city representative said the Fulton and DeKalb County boards of health both require permits to give food to the homeless and the city of Atlanta enforces those requirements.

While the requirements aren’t new, Atlanta police told Wilfon they recently started more strictly enforcing them for several reasons.

The city believes there are better ways to help the homeless, like getting them into programs and shelters. They are also taking issue with the litter the food distributions leave behind.

Naturally, leaving behind waste for the city to clean up is wrong — but littering is already a crime. Why not just enforce that law?

Instead, good people, who don’t litter, are being punished for helping their hungry and less fortunate counterparts.

Unfortunately, in the land of the free, feeding the homeless has become a revolutionary act. Cities across the country are cracking down on good people who want to feed the needy.

Last December, the Dallas, Texas city council enacted Ordinance No. 29595, which makes it illegal to serve food to the homeless without jumping through a statist myriad of bureaucratic hoops, including a fee, training classes, and written notices.

However, the folks over at the aptly named organization sadly,="

Sadly," a="a" about="about" activity="activity" desire="desire" endless="endless" every="every" feeding="feeding" for="for" generate="generate" has="has" homeless.

In May, the Alameda County Sheriff’s department posted a photo of a deputy arresting a man for selling fruits and vegetables on the roadside and attempted to justify the arrest. When people read the department’s justification, they lashed out — peacefully — to let them know what they were doing is wrong.

In June, a 38-year-old homeless man was attempting to earn some honest money by providing a much-desired service to the residents of Kennewick, Washington when he was threatened with extortion and arrest by the local police department, which effectively ended his enterprise. After the Kennewick Police Department threatened the homeless man and prevented him from making a living, they took to Facebook to shamelessly brag about it. The man was told that while it was illegal for him to fix bicycles, he could certainly beg for money.

Atlanta Police said the permits are not new, they're required by the Fulton County Board of Health. Permits have always been the law, according to Georgia State University Chief of Police Joseph Spillane. Fulton and DeKalb county boards of health require permits for food safety. Police have been handing out brochures reminding people a permit is required. Police said the city encourages people to work with local charities rather than create litter and potential health problems.

And while he said the groups handing out meals are well-intentioned, they’ve become a problem. “If you look around the city where these feedings happen, unfortunately, there’s trash everywhere afterwards, and someone has to clean that up,” Spillane said. Usually the cleanup is left up to campus police or the city, Spillane said, and it’s a drain on their resources. Now his campus and the city are encouraging groups to give out food indoors — at churches or shelters. Spillane said those are more humane places to serve people. The effort, he said, is part of a homeless outreach program the police chief started several months ago.

There is nothing wrong with helping your fellow man. Not helping people and pretending you are better than everyone else rots your soul and destroys your mind.

We aren't all EQUAL. We never were. It's not a matter of being "better". There will ALWAYS be poverty and sickness. Helping people, medically, does not promote weakness... feeding them causes DEPENDENCY... and you are smart enough to realize that.

... feeding them [as well as giving them money] causes DEPENDENCY...

Studies seem to back up your statement.

One report from the Department of Housing and Urban Development found that six out of ten homeless respondents admitted problems with alcohol or drugs. Given the likelihood of self- reported bias, the actual number could be even higher. Studies on homeless income find that the typical "career panhandler" who dedicates his time overwhelmingly to begging can make between $600 and $1,500 a month. But since panhandlers often have no way to save their money, they're incentivized to spend most of their day's earnings quickly. This creates a tendency to spend on short-term relief, rather than long-term needs, which can feed this dependency on alcoholic relief.

Established charitable organizations can obviously do more for the homeless than individuals can with giving them some free food or some extra change in their pocket.

Not helping people and pretending you are better than everyone else rots your soul and destroys your mind.

Wow! I really wouldn’t go so far to say that or agree with you on that, but I can definitely say that not helping people is a bad thing….If not done in the right manner

There is nothing wrong with helping your fellow man.

You are absolutely right! There is nothing wrong with helping your fellow man. There is a right way to do it and it is the Christian thing to do. In fact, I can show you 30 encouraging Bible verses about helping others.

But in our established society, there are wrong ways to help fellow citizens who are homeless and then there are established ways in which one must follow established societal norms, rules and laws

I can show you 20 Bible versus against lying. And that is what The Free Thought Project is doing here and now….lying when saying: “Feeding the homeless is now illegal in Atlanta and you will be ticketed and extorted unless you pay the state for permission beforehand.” That is an absolute unmitigated flat out LIE.

There is more than adequate feeding of the homeless in Atlanta and it continues today as it has for many years at established sanitary and health inspected indoor facilities with clean restrooms and tables with chairs for the homeless to get all the food they want. So it is NOT now and neither can I find where it has ever been illegal in Atlanta to feed the homeless. There is simply a prescribed method for the safety of the homeless and the benefit of the community that must be followed.

The article continues to state that someone will be extorted unless they pay the state for permission beforehand. It does not explain how any EXTORTION is involved because it is not. This is merely TFTP again using inflammatory wording to incite strong emotional feelings within some folks.

Yes, the purveyors of food for the homeless must secure a permit at a cost of $75. This permit simply lets the suppliers of food for the homeless establish an address of record where the health inspectors can go and periodically check the sanitation conditions for the preparation.

On a personal note….I go to a butcher in Phoenix who prepares all the meats, sausages and everything from scratch in the facility to sell up front at the counter to restaurants and individuals. I go there to buy my food items when they first open in the morning. This happens to be the exact time the state food health inspector has scheduled his daily inspection visit so that more often that not, I usually see the health inspector through the open area to the back of the meat market conducting a rigid inspection. While waiting my turn to be served, I have many times watched his entire inspection.

So with this in mind, my open question to anyone is….if the government cares so much about me to insure that I am eating healthy non-contaminated food then why shouldn’t the homeless people also be cared about in the same way to insure they are also eating healthy non-contaminated food?

Eh?

Or should we just say “fuck ‘em” and let them eat anything anyone wants to give them?

Eh?

Since Adele Maclean and Marlon Kautz are so shot in the ass to perform a civic minded moral duty to feed homeless people, then there are a great number of places to volunteer to help feed the homeless in Atlanta. They include soup kitchens, church organizations, food banks, missions, food pantries and other charitable organizations. These organizations are constantly reaching out to call for volunteers to help them feed the homeless.

If Adele Maclean and Marlon Kautz want to start their own soup kitchen they are free to do so. If it is merely the $75 license fee that is stopping them….then I am sure there are any number of benevolent citizens in Atlanta and throughout the country who will gladly spring the $75 for their license. I will and I think you both would too. Then I could be wrong, but I think not since you both are such caring people.

Eh?

And the way they do that is to FEED YOU... FOR FREE. You'll do anything for them once you're DEPENDENT. Asshole.

And you are in favor of allowing the feeding of the animals. Just look at your posts. You even want them dumb and high.... less motivated to live in SERVITUDE.
