He can barely even play guitar - in fact much of the early Byrds recordings were supplemented with musicians from The Wrecking Crew, a loose-knit circle of Los Angeles' top studio session musicians whose services were constantly in demand during their heyday in the 1960s and early 1970s. I have no real opinion about Nugents musical ability because what little I have heard from him isn't a style that appeals to me,but he is absolutely spot ON if he claims his career was hindered and he was refused contracts and connections because of his political viewpoint.
