Tonight at sundown begins a festive Jewish holiday Hanukkah. Hanukkah is an 8 day a festival of lights that is celebrated by lighting of the menorah. You can read the whole Hanukkah story here but in summary, Hanukkah celebrates a lighting miracle when one night's worth of oil lit candles for 8 days.
Special food and games are prepared and played on Hanukkah. Perhaps the most famous game is the Hanukkah Dreidel. Which is a four-sided, wooden or plastic spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side. The letters on the dreidel stand for the Hebrew phrase "Nes Gadol Haya Sham." Which means "A great miracle happened there [in Israel]." Children use it to play a game that involves spinning the dreidel and betting on which Hebrew letter will be showing when the dreidel stops spinning. The winner usually recieves chocolate coins.
One of the most popular dishes to serve on Hanukkah are potato pancakes called Latkas. The recipe is below:
Ingredients:
* 5 potatoes
* 2 onions
* 3 eggs
* 1 tsp. salt
* 1/4 tsp. pepper
* between 1/4 to 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
* oil for frying (canola is recommended)
Preparation:
1. Peel potatoes. Place in a bowl of cold water so they wont turn brown.
2. When ready to prepare the latkas, drain the potatoes. Place potatoes and onions in a food processor fitted with a knife blade. Pulse until smooth. Drain mixture well.
3. Pour potato mixture into a large bowl. Add beaten eggs. Add salt and pepper. Add enough flour so that the mixture holds together.
4. Pour 1 inch of oil into a large, deep frying pan. Heat the oil over medium-high heat.
5. Carefully drop 1/4 cup of the potato mixture into the hot oil.
6. Flatten the pancake slightly so the center will cook.
7. Fry for several minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
For all those that celebrate this wonderful holiday, Happy Hanukkah! :)
Adam Sandlers Happy Hanukkah Chanukah Song:
Bringing mood to Happy Hanukkah 2009 is Adam Sandler singing to his own composition of a Hanukkah song entitled the Chanukah. A flood of replays from his performance of singing the Chanukah is becoming a hit as more people are also looking for the Chanukah song lyrics.
As said by some critics about Adam Sandlers music, The Hanukkah Song, is a hilarious roll call of Jewish actors and actresses that remains a favorite of holiday partygoers everywhere. The song is undeniably a favorite song of the Happy Hanukkah season.

Oh Annie, it's good to see you here, I was wondering what kept ya! I know your book is going to be a hit, can't wait to read it myself.
PS Happy Chanukah to you too, sweetie I like this holiday because it is the holiday of the miracle Plus 12/12 is a New Age holy day altho I think I am the only one who celebrates it :) Love and kisses, Palo
altho I think I am the only one who celebrates it :)
Palo, sweetie,
12/21 is considered the first day of winter - it is the winter solstice - it is the new year. I think you transposed your numbers. And you are not the only one who celebrates. Many people of science celebrate it as their new year too. As do others who celebrate the winter solstice.
It is also the day the Mayan calendar ends on in 2012 and said to be our last day on Earth. 122112
Hi wonderful Mel 12/12 is the New Age Holy Day, because they say that is the day Jesus was actually born However you are right Winter Solstice 2012 is when the Mayans prophesied the arrival of the new world As I understand it, that is like the due date doctor gives expectant mom just as babies are born little earlier or little later the new world, heaven on earth, could arrive earlier As I understand it, it will mean the Reversal of the Fall (in Garden of Eden) hahaha we will see what it is like to live on our planet before we fell I imagine that must mean a higher consciousness, as the fall was fall to lower consciousness Love, Palo

Oh - I see. Thank you.
12/21 is Winter Solstice - The first day of winter - And when the new year is said to actually begin. It is the shortest day of the year. It is celebrated in many places, even Phoenix has celebrations. Some even believe the 21st to be the day Jesus was born, and the 25 is what the Romans call Winter Solstice.
So whether it be the 12th or the 21st or the 25th, I say Happy Birthday Jesus!
I like the Winter Solstice because by that time I am really ready for more daylight and I want things to warm up too you and I are lucky to live where we live, spring starts so early for us Love, Palo
