Scarborough: 9th Circuit Ruling Is ‘Laughable,’ ‘Will Be Overturned’

by Jeff Poor

10 Feb 2017

Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough criticized the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on President Donald Trump’s executive order halting immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

Scarborough said that although he thought the executive order was bad policy, the appeals court’s ruling was “laughable” and he said it will be overturned.

It is like adding a fourth item to "rock - scissors - paper".

One to rule them all.

That fourth item would win every time.

The game would lose its power.

That is what's happening with the courts.

There lies the power.

President Trump needs to educate America.

Hey, Boris, blow it out your ass with the attacks on the Pope.

The Pope is not the problem. Neither are Catholics.

I'm not sure that I cotton to the current pope's globalist comments and apparent tendencies, but there is an immediate problem on this forum and that's the careless and incendiary name calling.

That sort of talk carried to realization always results in unimaginable suffering of exterminees and exterminators alike.

Because our Lord is Jesus Christ, and he and his Father both commanded us to care for the poor, the weak, the sick, the elderly, the widow and the orphan. Therefore, that's what we have to do.

The most effective way to do that on the grand scale of modern nations is by having professional administrators do it, through taxes, so we support that.

Doesn't mean that we have to "nationalize all means of production" or any nonsense like that. Basically, we need the New Deal, universal Medicare, and universal public schooling. That covers just about everything. Catholics voted for all of that (though ended up having a parallel Catholic school system during the period that the Protestants used school prayer to try to force Catholics to say things obnoxious to the Catholic faith).

Catholic conservatism does not go so far as ripping up the social welfare state. We believe in the social welfare state.

Republicans put Catholics in an awkward spot, by waging a war against the social welfare state. So you end up with large numbers of Catholic Democrats as a result. That's why so many Catholics vote Democrat: it's about social welfare.

I'm not sure that I cotton to the current pope's globalist comments and apparent tendencies, but there is an immediate problem on this forum and that's the careless and incendiary name calling.

There are quite a few unreconstructed old-line Protestants here who think that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon, and that Catholics are mackerel-snapping kissers of the Devil's anus.

And they're not shy about saying it.

Obviously there are not many Catholics here, except me. But I'm French (in part), and Americans have made a habit out of hating the French for a long time.

Because the French and the Catholics are, in fact, supremely confident and proud in their own skin, having a bunch of inbred swamp dwellers calling us names is a bit of a badge of honor, really, a sign of jealously from below.

So, when I see the Catholic-baiting that happens, I always rise to it and then double down, to see what sort of apelike screeds I can get in response. And they always respond, like puppets on a string for me to play with. So I do.

Hate me, I don't leave. I'm French. I send over William, put an arrow through your king's eye, build my fort and stay. And then taunt you from the walls. Because it's fun.

Of course once that nonsense is done I am willing to work with the yahoos and the swamp dwellers and knuckle draggers to make the country better for all of us. I don't HATE them, I just roll my eyes at them and laugh - like one of Tolkein's elves looking at the dwarves. The dwarves hate, the Elves laugh, because Elves are better and they know it. Oh tra-la-la-lally down here in the valley ha ha!

Politically, Catholics and other sensible folk know that social welfare is necessary and racism is foolish, and so advocate for moderate policies on the right that preserve the social safety net (a robust one, not a threadbare one) and social and legal equality. We know that national security, law and order and public morality is necessary (no, we should not legalize drugs, and no, we do not have to have abortion on demand - it's murder - and no, gay "marriage" isn't really marriage (but no, we should not be prosecuting gays for sodomy either)).

I'm here to advocate for the sensible middle ground on the right - the Catholic right - strong defense, strong personal liberty - but not to the point of infanticide or imposing recognition of gay marriage on those who don't - strong social welfare.

Most of the folks here hate social welfare and make war with me. And so I sit in my castle and remind them that, yes, immigration HAS changed the country - all of that Catholic immigration since the Irish Potato Famine created the FDR coalition, which got us the New Deal, and that's a GOOD thing! And given the WASPs propensity to contracept their future away, the Hispanic tides rolling in will ensure that Catholic social welfare concerns are never dug out of the government by conservatives.

I'm here to remind conservatives that they can never, ever win their war against the social safety net, that it is a permanent gain, secured by the successful Catholic colonization of this country, and that my ilk never back down, and are growing in numbers.

We can still have a great and powerful and secure country, but it will be on the terms of strong social welfare to ensure the basic dignity of the poor, and not on the crazy dystopic terms of the hard Protestant right. They already lost partial control of their country when they let the Catholics in. We're here in force. We're here to stay. We're growing in numbers. And Jesus COMMANDS us to have public social welfare, so we will, forever.

That battle is lost to the hard right. They can win the other important battles on which they and we agree, and if they had brains they would understand where they have been beaten (and they were beaten because they were always defying God by hating social welfare - so God won), but see that by combining with people like me - the Catholic center and right - that we can clean up much of the rest of the mess and have a better future.

I don't leave because, really, that's the only hope for the future. The hard right WASPs have to accept the center right Catholics, accept social welfare as inevitable, and focus on restoring sanity over all the rest of the things on which we agree.

More and more get that over time, but you still have the outliers, like B Yeltsin here, who hates us Catholics like an angry dwarf hates the Elves...and I'm the Elf who laughs at him and taunts him for his tomfoolery in thinking that way.

Careless and incendiary namecalling is the name of the game on the anonymous Internet. So I'm giving you fair warning of when I do it.

When I see racism, I insult it directly. When I see Catholic hating nonsense, I tease the propagator mercilessly.

Because those two viewpoints are stupid and self-defeating. Like George Washington, you can't WIN without "the French" - which is to say Catholics like me - so I'm really doing you a favor when I upbraid and insult the racists, and ridicule the Catholic haters.

You already have a country full of Catholics. We believe in social welfare. So it's here to stay. You should not have a problem with that, because it protects you too - obviously you have some sort of learning disability from the way you write. You are protected from homelessness and starvation because of the social safety net you hate but we've provided.

We're not manipulated robots. We're people following Jesus.

You need to stop hating Catholics, because we want most of the same things you want.

You're right. The only thing that WILL save you is if you DO WHAT JESUS SAID.

He said to take care of the poor. By establishing social welfare, we are taking care of the poor better, and more comprehensively than that was ever done before in the haphazard past.

Therefore you should not be attacking us for this, if you want to follow Jesus anyway, because we're doing what he said to do.

"It is like adding a fourth item to ... "rock - scissors - paper" --- One to rule them all."

When I was growing up we did have a fourth item -- rock, paper, scissors, dynamite. Dynamite was one finger.

Paper smothered the dynamite. Scissors cut the fuse. And dynamite blew up the rock.

Careless and incendiary namecalling is the name of the game on the anonymous Internet.

Your insults are within bounds as far as I have observed.

What alarms me are the no so vague incitements to homicide and genocide that I see here on a regular basis.

I have no sectarian axe to grind, and you are welcome to your views on social justice. Your rants interesting and instructive to read.

What concerns many of us is that while we recognize that there is good in doing good, there is often no end of doing good. For example, when you ask those that see good in inviting the dispossessed and oppressed to our shores what the upper limit is to allowing in refugees into the country, they really have no concrete answer. These activists would allow them in without limit. Doing good has created immense bloat in federal and state budgets. NPR has just completed a brand spanking new building for its operations with a price tag of $450 million, most of it paid for by taxpayers. Tens of billions go out every year for food stamps that pay for fast food, beer, and condoms. A billion is spent on one federal courthouse. Medicare fraud is in the tens of billions of dollars every year. Billions are pumped into green enterprises that go belly up. We fund a huge education bureaucracy that has presided over decreasing educational performance year by year since the day it was instituted. You get the idea. We've tipped the scales at over $20 trillion in debt. Unfunded liabilities are stratospheric.

I commend your desire to do good. The problem is that no one has devised a system that imposes restraints on doing good. Most of us are afraid that doing good will end badly. Some us believe that the system was designed to work that way.

I would start by saying that charity begins at home, and that the purpose of charitable relief is to get people up on their feet so they CAN take care of themselves, not make them permanently dependent. To that end, a bit of stick is also warranted after a certain amount of time.
