US Deep State in Deep Trouble

By Finian Cunningham

January 08, 2017 "Information Clearing House" - "Sputnik" - US ruling power is in deep trouble because there are growing signs that the mass of citizens are no longer beholden to the supposed authority residing in Washington.

Once the legitimacy of would-be authorities begins to collapse in the eyes of the people, then profound political change is in the offing, as history shows us through countless empires that came and went – often ignominiously.

The so-called American Deep State comprising the military-intelligence apparatus and its operatives in the political and media establishment has put its credibility on the line over allegations of Russian interference in the US elections.

Those allegations are threadbare, indeed baseless, despite concerted, overweening attempts by the Deep State to conjure up something of substance.

The latest high-level intelligence report from the CIA

, NSA, FBI and other US spy agencies on alleged Russian cyber hacking may have “wowed” President Barack Obama, various members of Congress and the corporate-controlled news media.

Not so for ordinary Americans. Among rank-and-file citizens the reaction has been underwhelming to say the least. And that should be a matter of anxiety for the ruling establishment. If the people can no longer be commanded, then the whole foundation for power begins to erode like a sandcastle.

As a New York Times report put it: “What’s the big deal? asks Trump’s supporters on Russian hacking report”.

Among ordinary voters far removed from the Washington Beltway Bubble the consensus is one of derision towards the once-revered US intelligence community.

“Sore losers”, “sour grapes”, “crybabies” and “absurd” were just some of the disbelieving responses from ordinary folks about claims that Russian agents directed by Russian President Vladimir Putin had tipped the US November election in favor of Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.

“I don’t believe the [US] intel report,” said one man in Louisiana. “Why is everybody so afraid of Russia? I’m not against Putin.”

Another man, a retired US air force officer, added: “From the parts of the [US intel] report I’ve seen it seems silly.”

President-elect Trump, once again, seems more in tune with the real, pressing concerns of common citizens. He emerged from his so-called “briefing” by US intelligence chiefs last Friday and pointedly refused to join the Washington blowhards accusing Russia of “an act of war”. Trump in fact followed up with a comment that it was only a “stupid” person would not want to have good relations with Russia.

This was not the response that the spooks wanted from Trump. The CIA and their surrogates in the Obama administration, Congress and the media were building up the US intel report like a witch-hunt against anyone who dares to dissent from the allegations of Russian cyber interference. Unlike warmongering Congress members such as John McCain and Lyndsey Graham, Trump has not jumped on the bandwagon to demonize Russia.

And the thing is that people beyond the thrall of the Deep State centered in Washington appear to agree with Trump. At a time of immense social challenges from poverty, unemployment, financial indebtedness, deteriorating infrastructure and public services, and so on, a US policy of hostility towards Russia seems like an alien distraction. A contemptible waste of priority and resources, not to say a reckless drumbeat to war between nuclear powers.

The US intelligence agencies, aided by the Obama

White House and mainstream media, tried to muster gravitas to play its “Russian card” against Trump. But Trump and the popular sentiment out there are not responding in the deferential manner expected by the spooks.

In fact, despite sensationalist headlines in the mainstream media about “Putin ordering an influence campaign to help Trump win the election”, the US intelligence agencies are now in real danger of being exposed as ridiculous liars.

The collapse of the US establishment has been underway for sometime, but lately the momentum has quickened with the election of Trump and the mainstream media’s penchant for “fake narratives”. Last week the Washington disgraced itself by running a story about Russia hacking into the US electric, a story which was quickly exposed as “fake news”.

On the latest US intel report, as well as Trump and ordinary Americans, many observers from around the world were taken aback by the amateurish dearth of evidence and generally low quality of analysis. Independent cyber security experts, including US-based ones, poured scorn on the claims against Russia.

The US spy agencies claim that they have “supporting evidence” that Russia hacked Hillary Clinton’s emails

, but they say, unconvincingly, that they can’t disclose the information in order to protect “sensitive sources and methods”. Such a conjuring trick just makes the US spooks and the subservient news media look even more ridiculous.

A major giveaway was the disproportionately huge focus that the US intelligence report devoted to trying to discredit Russian news media outlets, RT and Sputnik. The report claims that the news services are part of the Kremlin’s “influence campaign” and then cites its own ropey rationale as “evidence” that Russia hacked the US election. If that’s the best that America’s “national security guardians” can come up with then we can be sure their case against Russia is null and void.

There was a time in the American past when shadowy, unelected elites could control society through monopolistic, servile media and servile politicians kowtowing to their supposed authority. There was also a naive belief among people that the secret services were defending the nation’s best interests.

Not any more alas. People have got wise to the massive manipulation and criminality of such shadowy powers who orchestrate wars and regime changes all around the world for the narrow benefit of elite corporate power. Ordinary Americans pay with their lives and livelihoods for the machinations of the ruling cabal.

The Deep State intel chiefs may have been fawned over by Obama, Congress and the media in their outlandish claims of Russian subversion. But growing numbers of ordinary people in the US and around the world can see through the lies and blatant agenda of hostility towards Russia – an insane hostility that only serves the elite interests of the Deep State.

The once feared, and revered, US Deep State is now facing a deep dilemma and maybe even an existential crisis. For it knows deep down that its erstwhile credibility and authority are shot to pieces.

Down through history, the American rulers got away with their charade of inciting wars and conflicts through false flags and contrived catastrophes: the not-so-secret Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the fabricated Gulf of Tonkin incident that escalated the US genocidal war on Vietnam, the dubious 9/11 terror attacks and Iraq’s non-existent weapons of mass destruction, to mention just a few.

This same warmongering American ruling class want another arms race, Pentagon-pumping Cold War with Russia. But this time they have played a card that is all too evidently blank. The US spooks and their elitist establishment know that Trump, the American people, Russia and the rest of world all know that they have nothing to offer.

No credibility, no morals and no authority, the US Deep State is in deep trouble.

US intelligence agencies are now in real danger of being exposed as ridiculous liars.

They look like ridiculous liars, but they aren't.

They are very dedicated men and women who have drunk their own Kool-ade. Their error - their Kool-ade - lies in deciding that Russia is a permanent enemy of the United States.

Because they all grew up in the Cold War, and came up through their careers in the intelligence and national security agencies during the Cold War, the vast bulk of them have hard-wired their brains to see Russia as the enemy. Putin WAS a KGB agent. Now he is the President of his country - a vast and powerful country that occupies much of the same landmass as the old Soviet Union.

These American intelligence types, locked in the Cold War, cannot see Russia as Russia and Putin as President of Russia, a Russia that has re- christianized and rejoined the European world, and that, like any other great power, has its own self-interests that sometimes conflict with ours.

Instead, our intelligence operatives still see the Soviet Union, with a KGB man at its head, still hell-bent on world domination.

It is a fantasy. Putin may actually be an Orthodox Christian. Even if he isn't, his country has become Orthodox again in ideology - Russian nationalist and traditionalist Christian. That is not the ideology of overthrowing the capitalist order for Communist revolution.

Most of our intelligence agents simply do not see this, they don't fathom it. They would say that people like me are naive for thinking this way, whereas in truth they are trapped in the paradigm of the past, the only one they ever knew.

So, what they are saying about Russian hacking is mostly untrue. Did the Russian hack our politicians? Of course they did - and Hillary opened the door wide for them by criminally operating a secret, unlicensed server out of her guest bathroom that contained key national secrets. She let them in.

The Russians hacked us. So did the Israelis, the French, the British, the Chinese, the South Koreans and the Indians. All of the major technological states with intelligence agencies hacked us, because they all want to know what the US is going to do, and want to influence that, if possible.

That the Russians did it does not make them any more of an enemy than the Israelis, who do it for the same reason.

We also do it to all of them.

The choice to view Russia's behaving as a normal advanced nation state, spying to protect its national interests, just like we do, and all of our advanced allies two, as an ATTACK, as WARFARE - but to not see everybody else (Israelis, English, French, etc.) doing it also as enemies - is the result of that Cold War mindset.

Our intelligence officials are unable to accept the reality that we WON the Cold War. The Soviet Union is GONE. Russia is not the USSR, any more than the German Federal Republic is the Third Reich.

But they won't see it.

During the Cold War, it was possible to move the mass of the American people by pointing to the REAL Soviet threats to us. Today, it is NOT possible to move the American people simply by screaming that the RUSSIANS spied on us (GASP!), or that the RUSSIANS wanted Trump to WIN! Of course they did! Trump has always said that good relations with Russia make good sense, and he's right, and the American people know it.

The intelligence agencies, caught in the Cold War, think they are smarter than everybody else, but they're sort of like the cavalry officers who charged the tanks in World War II: lost in past glory, with no comprehension of how the world has changed. They THINK they know more than everybody else, but their lens of understanding is so cracked that they misinterpret everything.

Worse, every political office in Washington has been thoroughly corrupted by the Obama Administration. He is the most fanatically political man who has occupied the White House in modern times. The people whom he has put in charge are utter partisans, and they respond to the interests of Obama and the other political leaders whose partisans they are.

So, for example, that they knew about the hacking for two years but did not sound the alarm, was because had they sounded the alarm before the election, it would have focused attention on the fact that Hillary Clinton's server was the open door through which all of the intelligence agencies in the world penetrated the inner circle of the US government. And obviously Obama and the Democrats did not want people focusing on that. So, ignore it all, let her win, and be done with it.

But she LOST. So NOW, in a desperate attempt to discredit Trump BECAUSE he is going to do with Russia what Nixon did with China - and that means a complete rewire of the defense establishment, the intelligence outlook, and the military production profits - and also because the Democrat President and his Democrat appointees want revenge - they are trying to pull the "Russian Fifth Column!" card that would have been very powerful in the Cold War, which, to them, is still going on.

But it's not. The Cold War ended 26 years ago. The people have moved on. Russia is just Russia - another country. We never fought an actual war with Russia. The Germans - they are the ones who gassed the Jews (and the Jews make sure nobody ever forgets that). The Communists were bad guys, and they lost, we won, and now Russia has rejoined European civilization.

And we still sell them a lot of wheat.

So, the Russians hacked the election? Oh bullshit. No they didn't. We voted for Trump because Hillary was a corrupt, evil woman and we didn't want her, and Obama was an incompetent buffoon who ran the country into the ground, and the media still pretends he didn't and that the economy is great, even when we all know that's crap.

Nobody has any credibility except Trump, and the people by and large agree with Trump: peace with Russia is an OBVIOUS cost saver, they hate the Muslim terrorists more than we do (and THEY are willing to kill them, get their hands dirty, "do" things that we just can't bring ourselves to do, but that really need doing). China is the aggressive Communist threat. They're the ones building islands and building a huge Navy and playing games with the currency and not opening their markets.

We all see this. And we know that Obama is still in charge, and the guys running the CIA are HIS appointees, which means they are liars and whatever they say is properly disregarded.

That's what is happening.

Trump will seriously rejigger the CIA. And unlike in the days of JFK, when trying to take on the military-industrial-intelligence complex could even cost a President and his brother their lives, today, a quarter century after the Cold War ended, the complex has decayed, the real military threat has receded to the point that nobody takes it seriously, and the CIA has become so politicized and lost in the past - and such a failure at dealing with the ACTUAL threat of Islamism - that it's a joke.

The Russians hacked in and got information. So did the rest of the world. Hillary's server was an open door.

We elected Trump because Hillary is an evil bitch. We're not even a little bit afraid of the Russians.

A lot of career CIA men are going to have to make a choice now. They still really, in their hearts, see Russia as the USSR. They are either going to have to unlearn their habits of mind or retire, because they are as foolish now as the men of France who built the Maginot Line against a type of warfare that had ceased to exist 30 years before.

The Cold War is OVER, everywhere except in the CIA. Now they will come into the modern world, either by opening their eyes, or by having their staff mostly replaced.

And unlike in the Kennedy days, the dark agencies no longer have the unanimity of purpose to be able to actually carry out a decapitation of Trump. They will be caught, and it will be the end of the agency, with death penalties, should any fools try that. Trump already has the firm allegiance of the Secret Service.

Nobody cares about Russian hacking, because it's normal activity, and we all rejected Hillary because she's an evil bitch, not because we're thralls of Putin. The CIA is living in fantasyland, and if they don't completely reverse course fast and fall in line with their new political master, and obey and serve Trump just as they are now obeying and serving Obama, they will be gutted in the budget and in personnel. And should be.

The CIA serves at the pleasure of the President. It is not as vital as it thinks it is, and it is not above the rest of the process. It will obey, or it will be turned into a second-rate agency that doesn't enjoy the power and prestige it has had.

Good post. I have only one question - do they really believe in this picture or do they act out of their narrow interests and are afraid to contradict those around and above them?

I'd say that a lot of us that are to the center and right of the spectrum breathed a collective sigh of relief when Hillary was thwarted, and now most of us are really hoping that Trump will proceed forth with the parts of his campaign agenda that we really liked.

I myself liked almost all of his agenda - Trump is definitely "my guy", a positive boon in my eyes, not a "lesser of evils" - so I am very hopeful.

I see the defeated bitter-enders on the Left, and paradoxically on the militarist right (in the CIA, who cannot accept that Russia is not the USSR), are going mental at the prospect of Trump's presidency, but there is nobody like that here on this site, so we don't hear them.

Once Trump is sworn in and starts to act, the howls will begin, as different factions of the Right have their oxen gored. I could probably tell you beforehand exactly where Trump is going to make various folks here on the site unhappy.

In general, Trump is a lot more like me in his thinking than he is a hard-right guy. Example: there is no way Trump is going to settle for less than health care coverage of the uncovered. Obamacare may be repealed, to fulfill a political promise, but whatever replaces it will have universal access, will require pre-existing conditions to be covered, and will have a federal subsidy to help pay for it. This is all obvious, and I myself strongly support all of that.

Hard-right folks have an ideological problem with government doing much of anything other than law enforcement, and they will be on the barricades screaming about "The Constitution".

So, that's coming. But we're not there yet.

Our constitutional rights cannot be infringed, and if this requires 'screaming' at the barricades, so be it.

But I think that the Democrats also have buddies in Big Pharma, and cater to them, and are just as corrupt in that ways as Republicans.

They really believe it? Please explain it to me, how is it possible.

The enmity of Americans to the Communist Soviets cannot be fully fathomed. It was not simply a pose. Nor was it a case of a stupid people being propagandized, like the Germans were propagandized by the Nazis.

There were facets of Communism that were anathema to the American spirit. The atheism, enforced atheism, was violently opposed to the theistic spirit of the most believing people in the Western world. The economic constraints of Communism - collectivization of property, the very IDEA of taking people's property by force for some grand overarching ideological scheme was the very incarnation of evil to the American mind, which vaunts personal wealth accumulation and independence. The utter lack of free speech, or press, or religion. Everything about the Communist belief system and practice reoounded in the American psyche like child rape - with that degree of visceral horror, disgust and hatred. Communism evoked hatred in Americans, on an individual level, because every aspect of it was something diametrically opposed to what Americans believe, their civic religion.

And then of course there was a mass death, the genocidal murder of millions by Stalin and his Reds. Americans viewed Stalin as worse than Hitler - he killed more people (they believe - who can say), and remember, Hitler was killing Jews - that's bad in the abstract, but Stalin and the Soviet Communists were slaughtering CHRISTIANS and INDEPENDENT PEOPLE OF PROPERTY - the Kulaks. The Communists were slaughtering people LIKE AMERICANS - Americans could identify with Stalin's victims by religion and by economic status.

Essentially, the Soviet Communist was the worst demon from hell that ever existed on the face of the earth, and most of the people who volunteered for the armed forces or intelligence services during the Cold War agreed with General Patton: that the United States should have used its nuclear monopoly in the late 1940s to exterminate the Soviet Communists from the face of the earth, thereby saving Eastern Europe and China and North Korea and Vietnam and Cuba from Communism, and even saving the Russian people (who didn't die in the nuclear holocaust).

The American Cold War mindset, of the sort of folks who went military and intelligence, viewed the Soviet Communists as pure evil, such that preemptive nuclear annihilation would NOT have been a genocide, because mass murdering genocidal Communists had, by the fact of what they had done, already forfeited the right to live and all deserved death as murderers.

That is the starting point. I don't believe that Europeans, or the Soviet Communists themselves (who thought of themselves as Russians) realized the depths of true HATRED that Americans had for Communism and Soviet Communism. All of the deaths of the Chinese Revolution, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba - all of the deaths from all of the causes the Soviets supported - were all laid at the feet of Communists - Soviet Communists. Soviet Communists, to American Cold War national security types were less understandable, more evil, more demonic, than German Nazis, in every way. Nazis were, after all, nationalists, not Communist internationalists. Germans had grievances - Soviet Communists were just brutal killers, pathological monsters, hell demons.

It was not an act - Cold Warriors of that era HATED the Soviets. And they were afraid that the Soviets were going to launch a surprise nuclear attack that would burn up all of our babies.

So, that was the starting point. I don't think that the Soviets, for their part, ever stopped mostly thinking of themselves as Russians, and mostly thinking of themselves as DEFENDING their homeland, but American Cold Warriors saw Soviets as fanatical ideological collectivist jihadists hellbent on world domination.

And of course the KGB were experts at torture - lurid medieval torture chambers lurked under Lubyanka prison. There be monsters.

So, the Cold War ended with the Soviet economy and government wilting on the vine. Boris Yeltsin was a drunk, not a threat. But Putin. He was KGB - a Gestapo torturer in the eyes of America's intelligence people and defenders. The Soviets may have spoken the game iof ideology, but how many of them really believed in world revolution? It's debatable. The Americans, however, really did fanatically hate the Communists - atheistic genocidal demons who want to enslave the world.

That is how they came up. And now the generation of Cold Warriors who came up with that are the leaders of the institutions. Russia is just another (big, important) nation now, but THEY see a surly, secretive military power of suppressed Communists led by the KGB. Anything in Russian self interests is still the yearnings of that old Communist urge to world domination.

In the end, the only way to get past that is time. The lump has to move through the snake. It's far along now. With Trump it will move faster. People are educable. But for a long, long time, the CIA has been, still, led by the former Soviet watchers, now Russia watchers, and Russia is still viewed by them as the threat the USSR was. China, meanwhile, is underplayed. Putin is viewed as much more dangerous than the Chinese leader - which is nuts considering the relative power of those two countries.

China has the industrial capacity and population to WIN a conventional war in Eurasia - they'd have to be stopped by nukes. The Russians could not conventionally invade Europe if they tried. Their army would be defeated by the Germans, French, British and other Western powers. Russia is a great military power because it has nuclear weapons, but those are fundamentally defensive deterrent weapons. You can't use them to conquer - you can use them to keep people like the Chinese from trying to conquer you.

The rethink comes slowly. There was a period when Russia was very weak, and the US exploited that weakness, treating Russia much like Weimar Germany. This was a mistake. It engendered resentment among the Russians, Putin not the least.

Putin has said that he will never trust the Americans again, but that is not really true. If he can deal for an extended period with a trustworthy American who genuinely respects Russia, and who genuinely NEEDS Russia as a strategic partner, Putin and the Russians will, I think, be able to change their view. Trump is the guy who can do that.

I think, too, that lots of guys in intelligence are younger, and even the old ones are smart. When there is no margin anymore in being a fanatic, most will come to their senses. The bitter-enders will retire.

There is a precedent for all of this. The English and French were the bitterest of enemies for 1000 years, but at the end of the 19th Century coming into the 20th, they came to grips with a new world order in which, really, they needed each other's strength against new, more dangerous threats.

The first generation really had trouble accepting each other, but by the end of the First World War, the French and British had come to understand each other and depend on each other, even if they didn't exactly love each other (and still don't). When Churchill said "Thank God for the French Army" and spoke throughout the war of the British Empire and the French Republic fighting oppression (even though France had been invaded by then, he really meant it - Britain could never be secure until France was free - it was unthinkable.

I think that it takes leadership - an entente cordiale between Trump and Putin, leading to bilateral military cooperation with Russia against Islamist threats, and a coordinated policy on China.

The more cooperation and less hostility, the more American service and intelligence people will get used to treating Russia like a Germany or Japan and South Korea - or perhaps India - an important country, not the subterfuge extension of the USSR.

But for now, there are still a lot of Cold Warriors trapped in the past. Some will never get past it. Most will adjust for career reasons. And the newer generation will never know anything but.

That's the truth, as near as I can see it.
