Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson framed an embarrassing lapse on foreign affairs as simple human error on Thursday after he responded to a question about a flashpoint in the Syrian civil war by asking, "What is Aleppo?"

The gaffe came during an MSNBC interview about the continuing battle for Syria's biggest city, Aleppo, which has been divided for years into government and rebel sectors and has been in the news daily in recent weeks. "What would you do, if you were elected, about Aleppo," Johnson was asked.

"About Aleppo. And what is Aleppo?" he responded. " You're kidding?" the MSNBC interviewer said.

"No," Johnson said.

"Aleppo is in Syria. ... It's the epicenter of the refugee crisis," the interviewer said.

"OK, got it. Got it," Johnson said.

Poster’s Comment:
And, just think, the libertarians want to be taken seriously when they and their party leaders continue to display no shortage of unconventional ignorance and radical actions. I still have visions of hundreds of libertarians wandering around at their convention dresses as sci-fi characters such as Kylo Ren from “Star Wars” and Gandalf costumes. And if that were not enough, Libertarian Party chair candidate James Weeks stripped naked to a Thong on C-SPAN. I have said that libertarians are strange with their truly bizarre ideas and antics. I will continue to say that. Only now, I can add ignorance as Gary Johnson pitches his case in his candidacy. Libertarians are a friggin’ joke to be laughed at and ridiculed.

If I were going to vote for 3rd party, I would vote for Constitution Party, I sure would not vote for Johnson & Weld.

I have noticed that they are running a lot of radio ads for Johnson, both locally here, on XM, and on line. I have never ever heard them do that before.

I have to wonder who is funding that? And why?

' About Aleppo? And what is Aleppo? - Some new kind of dog food?' --- He should have responded. -- 'Presidents have no power to micromanage events in foreign cities or states, despite what clowns like you imagine.'

This is simply a context issue. I'd like to know what was being discussed immediately before the question about Aleppo, and why the reporter asked what he'd do about "Aleppo" instead of what he'd do about "Syria". I'm guessing some completely different topic was being discussed and the reporter switched gears to foreign policy without warning.

Johnson had his faults, and I wouldn't vote for him this round, but to frame this incident as disqualifying or ignorant is itself unfair.

I can not hold that against him. Either you are for dealing with America and all its problems domestically or you are for world issues. I would not vote for Gary Johnson because he is for open borders which makes him unacceptable. Do people leave their front door wide open all the time just because they want to look as if they are above it all? No and neither should the America!

He got punked by demoncrap operative or as we know them MSM.

After reading the transcript, any reasonable person would agree that Johnson was NOT confused or uninformed about Aleppo, and that his only problem was the inept switch in context by his idiot interviewer.

Naturally, gatlin would never admit this, bigot that he is...

He let it happen and therefore it was his fault. Also, it was unfortunate that he humiliated himself by displaying total ignorance of the happenings in Aleppo since it has been constantly in the center of so much carnage as of late. It was an unacceptable lack of knowledge display since he is running for commander-in-chief.

You can not know everything around the world and be effective on the domestic front which is more important. Not saying ignore foreign policy but domestically we are in shambles. I do alot of reading and I had no idea what Aleppo is. Hell I thought it was some drug lord from Mexico! LOL

Gary is third tier candidate because he really just wants to be in the limelight making easy money as a political hack.

He did neither. You are simply on your routine demonization trip of anything and everything libertarian. Nothing more. That is the only thing you are putting on display on this thread.

There is no excuse for Johnson’s ignorance.

The interview was not an “ambush interview” and he was not forced or tricked into on-the-spot participation. As a campaigning politician, Johnson must be prepared to respond to any question asked at anytime, regardless of the sequencing or preparatory lead-in.

Johnson “fucked up royally”….there is just no nice way to express his poor performance and disappointing reaction to the question.

Earlier this year it was reported in “the Journal of Neuroscience that marijuana does not kill brain cells. In fact, marijuana can actually have a positive impact on a person’s mental health.” I did not place much faith in that report at the time, I have even less faith in it now after watching the interview with Johnson.

There is no excuse for Johnson’s ignorance.

In this case, Gatlin, ignorance is in the eye of the beholder.

If we were talking about baseball, and I asked you to recommend a good pitcher, you'd infer I was talking about someone who had a low ERA and a high strike out count. If instead we were talking about kitchenware, you'd infer from the exact same question I was asking about a container for pouring juices and such. It's called "context", and your willful display of ignorance about it is all you have to show here today.

It seems denouncing libertarianism is something that gives you something on par with a druggie high. It certainly would explain your sadistic obsession with libertarianism.

Sarge is confused with the "Libertarian Party" and libertarianism which is a political/economic philosophy. Ayn Rand was correct about the creation of "party" that waters down the true meaning of individual freedoms coupled with responsible behaviour with bastardized political consensus, too. Her point could have been directed at the mental midgets, as in sarge; they have it all confused.

I'm sure Gatlin doesn't care about any distinction. Seems the word "libertarian", whether referring to a political party or philosophy is all the same to him. I guess the concept of freedom is one he doesn't understand.

As for whether the political party would water down the philosophy, it's not a perfect world. If the L party ever replaced either the R or D party, it would probably mean the principles on which it was founded would be long since compromised, just as the R & D party probably did long ago.

As an aside, I wonder if technology will sometime soon impact the political world as it is impacting many other aspects of life, changing things from the archaic system of government we have today.

These Liberaltarian freak shows believe in Constitutional amendments such as "The borders shall be open" and Gay Johnson is on record supporting a border that you drive across at 60 MPH.

Liberaltarian open borders brings in riff raff from all over the turd world, including crap holes like Aleppo. They do not even know the places from which they've opened the floodgates.

These Liberaltarian freak shows believe in Constitutional amendments such as "The borders shall be open"

The official LP plank on open borders is this:

We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Political freedom and escape from tyranny demand that individuals not be unreasonably constrained by government in the crossing of political boundaries. Economic freedom demands the unrestricted movement of human as well as financial capital across national borders. However, we support control over the entry into our country of foreign nationals who pose a credible threat to security, health or property.

So the LP is not as open border as you claim Johnson is. I don't agree with everything in the LP platform, but there are many virtues in the LP platform, and in the libertarian philosophy in general. One shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Gary was great as a two-term governor of a sparsely populated state. We voted for Gary when we lived there and was pleased with the pile of vetoes he handed the lousy Democrats.

However, he has as much business running for president as does the vacuous Hillary. These candidates can't use the excuse, 'well a simp like Obama made it as did Bush II'. They proved they were just two more lousy excuses for presidents.

Liberals are a lot like Slinkys, they're good for nothing but they bring a smile to your face as you shove them down the stairs.
