The man suspected in the fatal shooting of JPSO Deputy David Michel Jr. has been captured during a manhunt in a Harvey neighborhood near the scene of the shooting, authorities said Wednesday afternoon (June 22).

The man is suspected of shooting Michel several times during a pedestrian stop at Manhattan Boulevard and Ascot Road, in the Pebble Walk neighborhood in Harvey, authorities said. They did not name the man who was arrested.

"The pedestrian did the shooting, according to witnesses," JPSO spokesman Col. John Fortunato said.

Rose Harper was inside the ER when she saw one of the deputy's family members being comforted by four other people.

Fortunato and JPSO Chief Deputy Craig Taffaro said that during the pedestrian stop, a scuffle between Michel and the suspect began, at which time the suspect pulled a gun from his waistband and shot the officer several times -- including once the officer was on the ground.

The suspect was caught in the Pebble Walk neighborhood by deputies. He was taken to University Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries he received during the altercation with Michel that immediately preceded the shooting, authorities said.

Officials also said they don't believe there are additional suspects in the shooting.

Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich said Michel was shot three times in the back, and an autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon.

"He was a great guy, he was well-liked," Taffaro said.

Taffaro spoke to Michel's father, who was driving in from Mississippi. Taffaro said Michel's father said his son died doing what he loved.

"As difficult as this is, he's doing what he loved to do," Michel's father told Taffaro, the chief deputy said.

After the shooting, Michel was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he arrived about 12:45 p.m. He died there less than an hour later.

Fatal shooting of JPSO officer came during pedestrian stop, authorities say

"The pedestrian did the shooting, according to witnesses," Fortunato said.

Around the scene, dozens of officers set up a perimeter as they hunted for the shooter. The northbound lanes of Manhattan Boulevard were shut down at Lapalco Boulevard. The southbound lanes remain open.

Gretna Police Department and agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives were assisting JPSO at the crime scene.

Way to go cop haters, another officer killed in the line of duty.

We have witnessed cop killings nearly double following the launch of hate campaigns that fueled the flames of the anti-cop movement.

The number of cops killed on duty increased from 27 to 51 between 2013 and 2014 which was a little over a year after coordinated hate movements to demonize cops began.

So far this year 559 people have been killed by police so that they could avoid doing their job, which is to take a few bullets if necessary while protecting the citizens.

The first one on the list:

Farmington police and fire department personnel responded to 133 Neal Street late Friday afternoon where Randy Blecher, 50, had been seen setting fire to the house and an out-building. Local police reported that on their arrival at the residence, Blecher was seen on the front porch holding a handgun and shotgun. As officers from other area law enforcement agencies arrived, attempts were made to negotiate with Blecher, asking him to drop the guns. Blecher moved from the porch and began to walk in the street where he pointed a gun in the direction of three Washington County sheriff’s deputies. The deputies fired their weapons striking Blecher. Blecher was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Within the limits set by the U.S. Supreme Court in Tennessee v. Garner, authority to use deadly force in the line of duty is granted by state law to state and local law enforcement agencies. Individual agencies set policies and procedures regarding when and how to use deadly force. The ruling in Tennessee v. Garner determined that deadly force is not justifiable simply to prevent a fleeing suspect's escape if the suspect does not pose a significant threat of death or serious harm to others. When deadly force is used within the prescribed manner, the killing is deemed a justifiable homicide.
