Title: C3 Corvette Barn Find Represents Awesome Americana at Its Best

One aspect that I find most entertaining about being a Corvette Forum member is seeing all the noobs come in, and how quickly our members are able to spot which ones are for real, and which ones are the weak and timid pre-teens borrowing their parent’s Hewlett Packard. The latter provides some entertainment, where as the former is what keeps growing Corvette Forum into what it is today.

In this example of a new guy looking for advice, we are greeted not only with a barn find, but one with significant drag racing history (or so it seems), and also an accompanying Corvette that was used as — get this — a tow vehicle. Awesome Americana doesn’t really come more pure than this.

The story started off a little shaky, but loose ends are being tied together with surprising ease, with a story that’ll tug at your heart strings. I don’t want to spoil it for you here, but the story has some pretty significant history and is evolving with every post. Find out how this car, sheltered for over 40 years, turns out. This is just the kind of stuff that I’m tuned into Corvette Forum for in the first place, how about you?

Thanks. My tastes in Corvettes runs from 1958 to 1962,but I am planning on buying a 89 or 90 convertible from a friend of mine once he gets the title straight. IF he ever gets the title straight. A nothing special 250 hp 350,but it is a red convertible, and I can get it for 4500. I can maybe drive it around for a year and get most of my money back when I sell it.

For modern fast stuff,my taste runs to 911's. Worked at a foreign car garage for a few months until the owner pissed me off enough we got nose to nose, but while I was there I did a valve adjustment service on a 911,and made the mistake of taking it out on a test drive on a road with a lot of 25-35 mph curves, and fell into serious lust. I don't see any danger of me ever having enough money to buy a new or really nice one, though.

As for barn finds,my dreams run to finding a really nice and complete 38 Cord cabriolet, any kind of Deusenberg,a 33 Plymouth cabriolet,or a 36 Ford 3-window coupe. None of which costs me more than 50 dollars.

BTW,here is a tip for all of you gear heads. If you are EVER within 500 miles of Auburn,Indiana, you owe it to yourself to visit the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg museum. Hard as it is to believe, the 3 most most beautiful cars ever produced anywhere were produced in this tiny little factory in Indiana. People come from all over the world to visit this museum, and there were several Japanese tourist that came in while I was there. When I first walked in the door there was a 38 Cord cabriolet with the "most maroon" paintjob in the entire damn world parked on the left as you walked in,and a Model A Dusenberg parked in front of it that was painted a cream color with orange detailing.

Stunning isn't a strong enough word for that Cord. When you enter the museum you are entering the actual (restored) showroom where the new cars were put up for sale,so you are stepping into a time warp that goes back to the late 1930's. I enjoyed the hell out of sitting on a couch near the door and just looking at the expressions on people's faces as they looked up and spotted the Cord and the Duesey near the door. As I said,"stunned" is as close as I can come to describing the looks on their faces. I would live there if they would let me.

Plan on getting there early and spending the whole day if you want to see it all. Seriously.

I'm not a fan of Corvettes in particular. I'm not even a member of that forum. I just like old(ish) cars in general. I guess that's why I found the story about this old Corvette find interesting. But, there's also the human interest aspect to the story about how this old race car was owned and driven by the new owner's good friend and how he bought it and wants to keep it intact as a sort of memorial in honor of his now deceased friend. The very fact that the original owner stowed it away still on the trailer he used to transport it on along with the other vette he towed it with and both cars and the trailer were still together as a unit so to speak after 40 plus years is pretty amazing.

Thanks for the heads up about the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg museum. It sounds fascinating.
