Drug that is 200 times more potent than heroin is sweeping Chicago

As rampant as the heroin epidemic has become, there is something new and even more dangerous.

By: Elizabeth Matthews

 Apr 13 2016

As rampant as the heroin epidemic has become, there is something new and even more dangerous.

A drug 80 to 200 times more potent than heroin is showing up all over Chicago. Overdoses from a synthetic form of fentanyl are being reported in most collar counties.

Users have been combining heroin and fentanyl for years. Fentanyl is much stronger than heroin and gives you a better high. But officials say there is a new form of fentanyl that may be catching users off guard.

“It’s monumental. I have never seen anything like it,” said Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil.

Heroin overdose deaths are skyrocketing. In Will County, there were 53 heroin-related overdose deaths last year. This year, that number could double. So far, 18 people have died, with two of them after overdosing on synthetic fentanyl.

“We believe that the victims are out perhaps top buy heroin and this is being substituted for heroin and they are actually overdosing on it rather quickly,” said O’Neil.

O’Neil says synthetic fentanyl looks the same as heroin or prescription fentanyl.

Fentanyl is one of the most powerful painkillers on the market and is usually given to cancer patients through a patch or an injection.

A DEA official says the powerful synthetic form is often created in amateur labs, and is coming from China.

“Same affect chemically, structurally, a little bit different, but the same affect,” O’Neil said.

Stepping Stones is a treatment center in Joliet and serves several hundred people a year. Many of them are now being treated for heroin addiction.

“About a quarter of those or a little more are opiate addictions, mostly heroin, and the prescription pain meds ten years ago we would have a handful,” said Paul Lauridsen of Stepping Stones Treatment.

Now, synthetic fentanyl seems to be sweeping the market.

“When people don’t' know what they are getting and they get a hold of something like that, it's tragic,” Lauridsen said.

O’Neil says the topic of heroin addiction is hard to discuss, but is a must with all members of your family.

“Another disturbing issue age 16 the youngest victim that was claimed in our county by heroin all the way up to a 73-year-old grandmother,” O’Neil said.

100 years ago, heroin was legal.

Coming Out of the Drug War Haze?

Most drug addicts would love nothing more than to straighten themselves out. But simply ordering them to do so is about as effective as ordering a diabetic to produce more insulin. They can't—or they would have long ago.

Drug courts can help. Because they involve substance-abuse counseling and other social services, they are expensive. But they have a good record: In Virginia, those who go through drug court have a recidivism rate of 14 percent, compared to 38 percent for similar offenders who go through regular courts.

Nationwide, three-fourths of drug-court graduates remain arrest-free for two or more years. The commonwealth has 37 drug courts now, up from zero a couple of decades ago.

In this regard Virginia and other states have begun to emulate Portugal, which decriminalized drug use (but not distribution) in 2001. Those cited for possession are sent to administrative, rather than criminal, courts. The dissuasion commissions, as they are called, encourage drug users to enter treatment programs by suspending fines if they do.

Drug use has not risen in Portugal; in fact, it has declined. So have drug-related deaths and HIV infection rates. And deaths from drug overdose rates? They're the second-lowest in Europe, behind Romania's. Portugal's rate of drug-overdose deaths is 3 per 1 million citizens. That is the total for all drugs of any kind.

If the U.S. had an equivalent rate, the number of Americans who died from drugs in a given year would be 954—instead of 47,000, including 10,000 for heroin alone.

In the war on drugs, maybe the time has come to try doing it right.

Then maybe most drug addicts shouldn't have stuck that first needle in their welfare arm.... or snorted that first line. Maybe they shouldn't have smoked that first rock.

F' all of them. I don't feel sorry for them. Your sorrow is an EXCUSE for one more asshole to stick that needle in their welfare arm for the first time. Why not... it's a "desease" you'll feel sorry for them over... then society needs to help them.

Addiction is a disease you blithering dildo.

It is you who is the blithering dildo to try and promote addiction as a disease.

Addiction is not a brain disease, It is a choice. You can quit with your “addiction is a disease” and you can’t stop it without medical treatment.

Why is it necessary to always mentioned addiction with a qualifier? No one goes around spouting off constantly by referring to cancer as “the disease of cancer.” There is no qualifier, it’s just “cancer” simply because it is so obvious that cancer is really a disease.

Cancer cannot be directly stopped by mere choices, ergo no qualifier is needed. Addiction to drugs and alcohol is obviously no disease and to call it as such you are redefining the term “disease.”

Addiction is not a brain disease, It is a choice. You can quit with your “addiction is a disease” and you can’t stop it without medical treatment.

What Is Drug Addiction?

Drug addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the drug addict and those around them. Drug addiction is a brain disease because the abuse of drugs leads to changes in the structure and function of the brain.

Although it is true that for most people the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary, over time the changes in the brain caused by repeated drug abuse can affect a person's self-control and ability to make sound decisions, and at the same time create an intense impulse to take drugs.

Drug use is a “libertarian” things with these Paultard assholes ...

They cannot begin to grasp just how much drug abuse undermines individual freedom and erodes the very core of their precious libertarian ideals because of the association between drug use when related to social and economic failure.

They advocate that addictive substances are okay so long as they do no harm to anyone but themselves. But their harmless world does no exist in the real world of drug abuse. There are numerous examples that drug users harm not only themselves, but also many others.

Because they are so adamant in their belief, it’s okay for them to live with domestic violence, pernicious parenting and criminal acts while under the influence of their precious drugs. In their zest, they never take time to realize that drug users’ freedom to consume costs the community their safety, and in many cases their liberty.

It's posting a link to some web site, without the poster having anything personally supporting or illuminating his position. A variation on this deranged type of posting are posts that contain nothing but personal attacks and name calling, lacking any substance and failing to actually promote critical thinking or to promote or defend a sensible and sane position. Mentally ill retards use this technique because they became exhausted trying to write something sane and sensible, or they were so proud of having finally written something that wasn't totally retarded they find themselves compelled to keep reposting it.

Why, you might ask, is this a sure sign of mentally ill retards? Because these people don't have the mental horsepower to articulate a cogent statement. They have to rely on web sites to do their speaking. Because they're mentally ill retards. 97% of mental health experts agree.

See the difference ...

You want a medical opinion, you want to believe a doctor ... then believe Dr. Marc Lewis who was himself a longtime addict as well as professor of developmental psychology when in his book, The Biology of Desire, he says that “addiction is not a disease, it’s simply a nasty habit.”

If addiction is a disease, then why do most addictions end spontaneously without treatment. For example, 75% of heroin-addicted Vietnam vets kick the drug when they returned home without treatment.

This addiction is a disease theory is fostered with powerful money forces behind it. It opens up profit opportunities from sea to shining sea. But more important than that, it is a comforting crutch. You see, you are not mortally flawed if you catch the flu … are you? Then the bleeding heart liberals want to use the analogy that you are not mortally flawed if you are an addict.

With this said, I do not expect you Paultards who go into a full prax-mode and treat your libertarianism like a religion to listen anyways.

Then the bleeding heart liberals...

Well, since you're a self-described fed.gov stooge, what is the official goobermnet position?

What Is Drug Addiction?

Here's what the NIH says:

Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her.

Although the initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for most people, the brain changes that occur over time challenge an addicted person’s self-control and hamper his or her ability to resist intense impulses to take drugs.

Reports reveal ... Prince died from overdose --- of opioid fentanyl

Junho 11, 2016

Prince died from an overdose of a synthetic opioid called fentanyl the local medical examiner has found

On Thursday, Mauzy said his clients never delivered, dispensed or administered any medication to Prince. He weighed 112 pounds at the time of his death.

"The decedent self-administered fentanyl", the medical examiner's report said, listing cause of death as "fentanyl toxicity" and noting it was accidental.

Paramedics performed CPR but were unable to revive him, authorities said.

The untimely death of funk superstar Prince may have been prevented by addressing his opioid addiction much earlier, suggests the man who called 911 after finding the musician's lifeless body. Howard Kornfeld, an addiction treatment doctor has also stated he was in touch with Prince's representative the day before Prince died. According to CBS Minnesota, Andrew was in Minneapolis to consult with Prince on behalf of his father to draw up a plan on how he could treat his addiction. Illicit use is also a growing problem, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says: It is increasingly winding up in the wrong hands through pharmacy theft, fake prescriptions and illegal distribution by doctors and patients.

A prominent doctor says the death of Prince, pictured speaking at the NAACP Image Awards in Los Angeles in March 2011, will help raise awareness of the dangers of fentanyl and other powerful synthetic opioids. For manner of death, a box was marked for "accident".

The illegal distribution of fentanyl resulting in death carries a mandatory minimum 20 years behind bars in federal court. If it's the latter, someone could face criminal charges carrying years, even decades in prison. "If it wasn't prescribed?"

Fentanyl is a painkiller that is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, according to medical experts.

What's more, there are numerous ways to misuse and overdose on fentanyl, by applying multiple skin patches or eating one, Agrawal said.

"That would be something that you would know".

If the fentanyl was prescribed by a doctor, who got it for Prince? The medications were not specified in a search warrant for the Minnesota hospital that employed Schulenberg at the time.

On April 7, Prince postponed two performances at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta from his Piano & A Microphone Tour; the venue released a statement saying he had influenza. Billboard says no artist has had that many albums in the Top 10. With a slight smile, he jokes about having been "under the weather". His voice seems a bit weak at times while speaking, but sounds fine when singing during his 80-minute show.

First responders gave him a shot of Narcan, an antidote used in suspected opioid overdoses.

Prince was last seen on the eve of his death around 8pm at his compound in Paisley Park in Minneapolis. "Wait a few days before you waste any prayers", he tells fans.

The day before Prince died, his team called an eminent opioid addiction specialist in California seeking urgent help for the singer, an attorney working for the specialist and his son said. Unable to immediately fly to Minnesota, Kornfeld sent his son Andrew in an effort to convince the musician to seek long-term care at his Recovery Without Walls center in Mill City, California.

Prince Rogers Nelson, full name of Prince, died on April 21 after he was found unconscious in an elevator at Paisley Park. The tests were conducted by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office, and they made the results public through a press release that they posted on their Twitter account.

Here's what the NIH says ...

Screw NIH and I will tell you why ...

I keep coming back to the addicts for factual testimony. In addition to the one I mentioned, there is James Frey who wrote about his experience as a addict. He said: "People need to get rid of the idea that addiction is caused by anything other than themselves." Frey took every drug from alcohol to crack and he scoffs at the claim that addicts’s brains compel them to stay on drugs. He says he wasn’t powerless.

There are many studies that show addicts recovering without professional help. I return to the Vietnam War example I gave earlier. There were literally thousands of soldiers who became addicted to heroin. Hundreds of these soldiers were tracked for three years after they returned home and 88 percent of those addicted to narcotics in Nam cut the addiction on their own.

The use of the word “disease” is important because it means “$$$$” in the pockets of those perpetuating the myth. If it is said that it’s a choice and not a disease, then insurance companies will not pay for that and a zillion clinics will go out of business. The desire for profits can usually be traced to the root of evils. We are talking about a $34 billion industry. It permeates through the entire spectrum. Even urine testing for drugs costs $2 billion per year and there is no established proof of efficacy.

You quote the NIH as an authoritative source. Let’s look at the NIH. You hear that vacuuming sound? That is the sound of the federal government sucking money out of your pocket to fund the nearly $32.3 billion annually that goes into medical research for things like researching addiction as a “disease.” Listen up and learn. More than 80% of the NIH's funding goes to 50,000 competitive “grants” where more than 300,000 researchers at more than 2,500 universities in every state and “around the world” to study addiction as a “disease” among other things. The NIH supports projects by hiring nearly 6,000 scientists in its own laboratories atn Bethesda, Maryland.

Can there be any wonder why the NIH continues to promote and show cause that addiction is a “disease?” If they were to call it a "choice," just think how much of $32.3 billion annually would go towards paying off the nation debt instead of lining the pockets of “researchers” to call addiction a “disease” and started calling addiction a “choice.”

So, you Paultard hypocrite … don’t you dare ever talk to me about a smaller government out of one side of your warped libertarian mouth and then sing the praises of NIH out of the other side for classifying addiction as a “disease.”

Screw NIH and I told you why ...

What is not getting old is you Paultards so afraid of being wrong. That's probably why barely 10% of you voted for the last libertarian POTUS candidate. Your fall back position is that if your ideas can never be or have been tested, then they can never be wrong. Of course, your final fall back position is always that you can instantly wash their hands of any wrong by declaring it is not "true" libertarian. You Paultards are the assholes that only point out flaws, never provide solutions and never actually try to fix anything. You just want to show how bad something is. You always point to “government is bad” … but never to “something is good.” And now you are trying to say the NIH is good because they say something you agree with. Geeze …

There is certainly much more to addiction than neurochemistry - which further undermines the idea that we must have a War on Drugs burning tens of billions of taxpayer dollars every year, and channeling more billions into criminal hands, so that Americans won't get addicted.

He got caught like a rat in his own trap. But it just goes to show that Paultard libertarians are posters who like winning arguments more than being correct. They are simple minded and therefore find it to be the easiest political philosophy to argue. How do I know this? Just look at any thread posted on LF and see a problem in the world with the economy, drugs, environment or anything. Then look at the Paultards’ posts. A Paultard will have an answer to the problem just by reading the headline, and it's always the same answer.

We find ourselves living in interesting times where among other consequences and for no good reason we have a few asshole Paultards. Their distaste for facts isn’t merely a ritual with these cranks; it's actually their libertarian doctrine. These crackpots are low key harmless and nothing but humorous footnotes to laugh about and poke fun at. They are of little importance since their ideology gets no more than 1% of the vote.

I have a full size Donald Trump cardboard cutout standup in EACH room.

Also, we have breakfast together each morning and I place the full size (6'3") lifelike "Donald" in the passenger seat of my RR when I drive around Scottsdale. He gets a great number of double takes and waves.

You are now officially crowned as chairman of the LF Trump "wet panty" brigade.

And guess what? If Trump is elected you will see it become even more pervasive.

Of course, State-worshiping goons like you are supporting him for just that reason.

I know that Trump has caused any number of people to "pee in their panties" many times and it is an honor to be associated with his causing "wet panties on people who need enlightening."

You should not attempt to present two pictures of unrelated incidents and carefully select pictures which you use to induce people to rush to judge these two incidents as just another case of the use of excessive force without presenting an accompanying detailed unbiased narrative to fully explain the before, during and after in the two situations.

In this post, you are intentionally trying to get people to rush to judgements without having all of the facts. In doing so, you are encouraging snap judgments to be made that are often based upon the use of stereotypes or prejudices by presenting only the pictures. We all must realize that It is very difficult not to have some mental “pre-conditions” in life … but we must also realize that it is even more difficult to not use them to make a quick judgement of a situation.

You are presenting a situational condition that can trigger the opportunity to pre-judge or rush to judgement. You do this while omitting any of the facts to support those judgments. The confrontational situations you picture here almost always cause some to get on one side without stopping to try and understand all of the facts involved … without taking the time to see things clearly.

These SWAT members and this officer may be doing something wrong. But we need to have enough information to decide that for ourselves and not have you leading us down the path by the nose to come to conclusion you want to force us to reach. We should not make a judgement about these officers and the situations until we have the time to collect and analyze the facts that should be driving that decision. Instead of “thinking fast” we should just try to get information. If we just stop and ask ourselves “what don’t I know?” about this situation, we will realize that is more important than what see in one split second isolated action shot from a long series of events.

Yes, I was freely sitting on my porch having a beer with a Glock attached to my hip... looking at my freely paid for vehicles and considering freely golfing. This was after I went to bed, freely at the time I desired and woke up when the fuck I wanted to. It's funny, because everyone I remember that day on my block was freely doing almost the same thing. If I remember correctly, Paultard, the only thing I would have been FORCED to do that day was die (we are gonna die someday, we have no choice in that) and pay taxes. Gladly, it wasn't my day to die. I had too much stuff to do freely.

As far as Boston goes, I find it ironic that you haven't complained about the hundreds of people injured or killed during that marathon run, that weren't free to watch a race without getting their mother fucking feet blown off... but you sure as hell are concerned about those mean mean cops that took care of a couple of America haters (like you Paultards do)... that shouldn't have been allowed here in the first place.

You had the freedom to do what ever you wanted that day, Puketard... and you chose to sit on your fat ass, enjoying your FREEDOM to bitch about a country that allows you the freedom to be an asshole 24/7.

The more the PAULTARDS hates him... THE MORE THE OTHER 94% OF AMERICA LOVES HIM.

"What's your source for this information? I've searched and can't find where ANYONE wants to outlaw Taxol."

On this forum. One of them stated this within the past week or so.

Hmmmm ... I think there may have been some sort of misunderstanding; a Google search on Taxol site:libertysflame.com finds only this thread, and banning is not a libertarian act.

U don't know me, you have your doubts about chemotherapy, to say the least ... have you recently called for, or noticed anyone else on LF calling for, a ban on chemo drugs?

A government strong enough to impose your standards is strong enough to ban them.

Yeah - door to door warrantless searches.

I bet the gun confiscations after Katrina didn't bother you either.

Yeah - door to door warrantless searches.

What was the reason for these “warrantless searches?”

Warrantless searches can be performed without a court ordered search warrant when reasonable. And it will be strictly up to the court to later determine if the warrantless search was reasonable.

Get with the program, sport … get educated.
