Drug that is 200 times more potent than heroin is sweeping Chicago

As rampant as the heroin epidemic has become, there is something new and even more dangerous.

As rampant as the heroin epidemic has become, there is something new and even more dangerous.

A drug 80 to 200 times more potent than heroin is showing up all over Chicago. Overdoses from a synthetic form of fentanyl are being reported in most collar counties.

Users have been combining heroin and fentanyl for years. Fentanyl is much stronger than heroin and gives you a better high. But officials say there is a new form of fentanyl that may be catching users off guard.

“It’s monumental. I have never seen anything like it,” said Will County Coroner Patrick O’Neil.

Heroin overdose deaths are skyrocketing. In Will County, there were 53 heroin-related overdose deaths last year. This year, that number could double. So far, 18 people have died, with two of them after overdosing on synthetic fentanyl.

“We believe that the victims are out perhaps top buy heroin and this is being substituted for heroin and they are actually overdosing on it rather quickly,” said O’Neil.

O’Neil says synthetic fentanyl looks the same as heroin or prescription fentanyl.

Fentanyl is one of the most powerful painkillers on the market and is usually given to cancer patients through a patch or an injection.

A DEA official says the powerful synthetic form is often created in amateur labs, and is coming from China.

“Same affect chemically, structurally, a little bit different, but the same affect,” O’Neil said.

Stepping Stones is a treatment center in Joliet and serves several hundred people a year. Many of them are now being treated for heroin addiction.

“About a quarter of those or a little more are opiate addictions, mostly heroin, and the prescription pain meds ten years ago we would have a handful,” said Paul Lauridsen of Stepping Stones Treatment.

Now, synthetic fentanyl seems to be sweeping the market.

“When people don’t' know what they are getting and they get a hold of something like that, it's tragic,” Lauridsen said.

O’Neil says the topic of heroin addiction is hard to discuss, but is a must with all members of your family.

“Another disturbing issue age 16 the youngest victim that was claimed in our county by heroin all the way up to a 73-year-old grandmother,” O’Neil said.

That makes me 20 times more excited as long as this drug causes 10 times the fatal overdoses.

You're an asshole.

Would you be so smug and arrogant if someone in your family became addicted to heroin?

Never mind - you wouldn't give a damn about them either.

Addiction is a disease you blithering dildo.

Would you be so smug and ar

That's the difference between LIBERAL weak you and conservative stronger me. I don't allow ANYTHING to justify away PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY... even if it's a relative. Drug addicts don't just accidentally develop a meth, heroine or cocaine addiction and fall on the needle. Only you libtarded SOFT thinking shitheads have equated drug addiction to a disease. 100 years ago society would never have thought that some douchebag that WILLINGLY pounds his head against a wall... dies from the desease called brain damage.

If one of my family is so stupid to shoot a toxin in their veins... and then overdose, well F them. They knew the dangers.

100 years ago, heroin was legal.

Coming Out of the Drug War Haze?

Most drug addicts would love nothing more than to straighten themselves out. But simply ordering them to do so is about as effective as ordering a diabetic to produce more insulin. They can't—or they would have long ago.

Drug courts can help. Because they involve substance-abuse counseling and other social services, they are expensive. But they have a good record: In Virginia, those who go through drug court have a recidivism rate of 14 percent, compared to 38 percent for similar offenders who go through regular courts.

Nationwide, three-fourths of drug-court graduates remain arrest-free for two or more years. The commonwealth has 37 drug courts now, up from zero a couple of decades ago.

In this regard Virginia and other states have begun to emulate Portugal, which decriminalized drug use (but not distribution) in 2001. Those cited for possession are sent to administrative, rather than criminal, courts. The dissuasion commissions, as they are called, encourage drug users to enter treatment programs by suspending fines if they do.

Drug use has not risen in Portugal; in fact, it has declined. So have drug-related deaths and HIV infection rates. And deaths from drug overdose rates? They're the second-lowest in Europe, behind Romania's. Portugal's rate of drug-overdose deaths is 3 per 1 million citizens. That is the total for all drugs of any kind.

If the U.S. had an equivalent rate, the number of Americans who died from drugs in a given year would be 954—instead of 47,000, including 10,000 for heroin alone.

In the war on drugs, maybe the time has come to try doing it right.

Then maybe most drug addicts shouldn't have stuck that first needle in their welfare arm.... or snorted that first line. Maybe they shouldn't have smoked that first rock.

F' all of them. I don't feel sorry for them. Your sorrow is an EXCUSE for one more asshole to stick that needle in their welfare arm for the first time. Why not... it's a "desease" you'll feel sorry for them over... then society needs to help them.

As usual - you miss the entire point simpleton.

Your glorious drug war is an epic failure.

You know what they say : "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

In other words - you and the other Anslinger groupies are, by definition - insane.
