Jeb Bush endorses Ted Cruz

'Ted is a consistent, principled conservative who has demonstrated the ability to appeal to voters and win primary contests,' the former Florida governor says.

In a surprise announcement, Jeb Bush will endorse Ted Cruz on Wednesday as an antidote to the “divisiveness and vulgarity” of Donald Trump, providing a badly needed boost to the Texas senator – but it’s one that comes dangerously late in a game that Trump is dominating.

Cruz, in New York City on Wednesday, planned to celebrate with a victory lap of three network morning shows. The endorsement comes 32 days after a beaten Bush dropped out of the GOP presidential race, and eight days since Sen. Marco Rubio abandoned his own quest after being rebuffed by Bush, his fellow Floridian and one-time mentor.

Bush says in a statement to be released by the Cruz campaign: “Ted is a consistent, principled conservative who has demonstrated the ability to appeal to voters and win primary contests.”

“For the sake of our party and country, we must move to overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity Donald Trump has brought into the political arena, or we will certainly lose our chance to defeat the Democratic nominee and reverse President Obama’s failed policies,” the statement continues.

The news will surely irk Rubio, who could have benefited greatly from Bush’s embrace. But a Republican source said: “Jeb came to believe Marco was not up to the job of being President. It was never really under serious discussion.” POLITICO reported on Monday that Rubio had rejected the idea of joining a “unity ticket” with Cruz.

Bush and Cruz sealed the endorsement agreement with a phone call on Monday. “They have kept in touch over the last few weeks and Senator Cruz has been diligent about keeping Governor Bush up to date on his campaign,” a source close to Bush said.

Ted Cruz's major endorsements

The source said Bush “will actively support Senator Cruz’s bid,” but has not yet agreed to a joint appearance with Cruz, or to headline a fundraiser for him.

Cruz is finally getting a rush of the establishment love that so long eluded him: Mitt Romney said he voted for Cruz in Tuesday’s Utah primary, which the Texan won easily, and recorded get-out-the-vote calls for him in Mormon-heavy Utah and Arizona.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) held a fundraiser for him in Washington on Monday, in connection with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference. And former rival Carly Fiorina endorsed Cruz while making a surprise appearance with him at a Miami rally six days before the Florida primary.

Bush’s endorsement is a massive boost for Cruz with the establishment wing of the GOP, which he's struggling to win over as party regulars make frantic moves to stop Trump, who is dominating in the delegate race. And it comes at a time when he's facing strong competition from Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who has remained in the race and is courting the same mainstream Republican donors that Cruz badly needs right now.

The source close to Bush said: “Senator Cruz also met with Governor Bush in Miami before the last Republican debate there (as did Kasich and Rubio). Senator Cruz has demonstrated the ability to bring voters together and to win primaries (which is the key at this point). They have a mutual respect for one another. He is the absolute best shot Republicans have to defeat Donald Trump and then Hillary Clinton.”

The Bush source continued: “This is NOT an anti-John Kasich endorsement. Governor Bush has enormous respect for John Kasich and he enjoyed spending time with Governor Kasich over the past year – thinks he is a good guy and a good governor. At this point, the best path to victory is supporting the candidate who has been able to win states and win over voters.”

Bush says in the statement: “Today, I am endorsing Ted Cruz for President ... Washington is broken, and the only way Republicans can hope to win back the White House and put our nation on a better path is to support a nominee who can articulate how conservative policies will help people rise up and reach their full potential.”

“To win, Republicans need to make this election about proposing solutions to the many challenges we face, and I believe that we should vote for Ted as he will do just that,” the statement continues.

Cruz concludes the statement: “I'm truly honored to earn Governor Jeb Bush's support ... Governor Bush was an extraordinary governor of Florida, and his record of job creation and education innovation left a lasting legacy for millions of Floridians.”

“His endorsement today is further evidence that Republicans are continuing to unite behind our campaign to nominate a proven conservative to defeat Hillary Clinton in November, take back the White House, and ensure a freer and more prosperous America for future generations,” Cruz said.

Poster Comment:

Jeb knows that this will kill Ted's chances. It's his way of endorsing Trump, and helping to kill off the opposition at the same time.

Cruz is the obnoxious nerd in the fraternity that everybody wishes they hadn't voted to let in.

Trump threatens the EXISTENCE of the fraternity - he'll shut it down.

Faced with a choice between the nerd or dissolution, they're going for the nerd. And in the process, guaranteeing that when Trump wins, he'll dissolve them.

Well, now we know how Baby Brudder Neil got hired. His nose under the tent was bought with Bush Crime Family delegates and connections.

I see it as a way of keeping the Bush Crime Family name relevant in mainstream Republican politics.

With JEB out of office and obviously unelectable, they needed a way to keep their name/brand/trademark relevant. IMO,this was the price they paid to get Neil in the Cruz campaign. A last gasping effort to keep their name viable until they manage to finally buy a congressional seat in Texas for Jorge Prescott Bush, one of the "brown grandbabies".

They already got his arrest record expunged, got him through law school, bought him a blonde trophy wife, and have bought him a seat in at least three Republican Law Firms to prep him for the state office they bought for him recently. He's probably going to have to show up there to answer the phone until the next congressional election or they can find a congressman willing to retire for the right cash offer that has a safe "brown" district. No way in hell can they take a chance on him losing his first election.

Complete and total BS. Trump is not going to win,and if the Bush Crime Family though that he was, they would have thrown their name behind him. They didn't because they are already associated with enough losers.

Complete and total BS. Trump is not going to win,and if the Bush Crime Family though that he was, they would have thrown their name behind him.

If the Bush crime family were competent, Jeb would already have the nomination clinched. Instead, he lost by the margin of error. They're a spent force, reverting to the mean. Two disastrous presidents.

Trump will win.

You've been wrong all election cycle. You'll be wrong on the final day. You'll be pissed off (but then, you're safety-wired to the "pissed off" position).

And then you'll end up happy that Trump won, because he is going to do a lot of things you're going to like.

In a year, you'll be extolling his virtues.

Not exactly. In Arizona, Kasich finished fourth in a three man race. He is irrelevant. He is not an option.

The party establishment has chosen to give a public show of support to Cruz as the only (very faintly) possible alternative to Trump gaining an outright majority win on the first ballot. Cruz has no realistic chance of gaining a majority. Cruz would need to win 82% of the remaining delegates and that is not happening. The establishment is backing Cruz in a last gasp desperate effort to deny a majority to Trump, resulting in a contested convention where they can insert the candidate of their choice, not Trump, not Cruz.

Trump appears unstoppable at this point and likely to get around 1300 delegates.

As for a Jeb endorsement, the future of the Bush dynasty is George P. Bush, the Texas land commissioner. George P.'s political future would look brighter if the Bush family is not the mortal enemy of Texas senator Ted Cruz.
