Associate Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead of apparent natural causes Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa.

According to a report, Scalia arrived at the ranch on Friday and attended a private party with about 40 people. When he did not appear for breakfast, a person associated with the ranch went to his room and found a body.

Chief U.S. District Judge Orlando Garcia, of the Western Judicial District of Texas, was notified about the death from the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. District Judge Fred Biery said he was among those notified about Scalia's death.

"I was told it was this morning," Biery said of Scalia's death. "It happened on a ranch out near Marfa. As far as the details, I think it's pretty vague right now as to how," he said. "My reaction is it's very unfortunate. It's unfortunate with any death, and politically in the presidential cycle we're in, my educated guess is nothing will happen before the next president is elected."

The U.S. Marshal Service, the Presidio County sheriff and the FBI were involved in the investigation. Officials with the law enforcement agencies declined to comment.

A federal official who asked not to be named said there was no evidence of foul play and it appeared that Scalia died of natural causes.

A gray Cadillac hearse pulled into the ranch last Saturday afternoon. The hearse came from Alpine Memorial Funeral Home.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement Saturday afternoon, calling Scalia a man of God, a patriot and an "unwavering defender of the written Constitution."

"He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution," Abbott said. "We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the Supreme Court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers."

Scalia was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan.

Staff writers Vianna Davila, Tyler White and Richard A. Marini, John MacCormack and Guillermo Contreras contributed to this report.

Damn, just damn. May he RIP !

And with this, the Presidential battle now becomes specifically over control of the Supreme Court. Democrats will walk on their lips through busted glass to vote for Hillary now, even if they hate her.

If a Republican wins, the court essentially stays the same. But if a Democrat wins, the liberals will control the court for the first time since 1969.

Yes it is extremely important that the Senate Republicans stand firm in insisting that the position is not filled this year .

They will.

And even if Obama fills the spot with a gap appointment during a Senate recess, the judicial calendar moves slowly.

If Obama replaces him we're screwed.

Hopefully a whole swath of liberal supreme court justices retire or die during the Trump Presidency. Hopefully President Trump lives up to his duty and appoints a constitutionalist. Or Cruz if that is the case. Or even Rubio or Carson. Not Bush or Kasich.

At least Rubio may pick some good judges. A possibility.

Hopefully President Trump lives up to his duty and appoints a constitutionalist.

Maryanne Barry is a Senior United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She was originally appointed to the federal bench by Ronald Reagan. Trump has previously mentioned her (his sister) as a possible Supreme Court nominee.

During the Republican primary debate last night, Trump proposed Diane Sykes and Bill Pryor for the Supreme Court. I haven't looked into them, but other conservative forums seem pleased.

Now, will Hillary and Bernie say who they will appoint? Will they even be asked?

We don't need another fake Catholic on the bench.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:6-8)

DEEP DIVISIONS among people jockying to position a new SC justice.

Ohio Governor John Kasich, a moderate among the Republicans vying for the White House, said the Senate should wait because a battle this year would only deepen divisions in the country.

Yup, agree with me or you're being divisive.

I've heard variations of this theme for decades. Do what I say or you're being divisive. The people saying it should have their tongues cut out. The entire God damned country has been propelled into destruction and disenfrishment by meek compliance to the people employing the theme.

Let's have more divisiveness as a measure of self defense.

If I recall correctly, I believe the argument for lifetime appointments was to keep the judges from being bribed, or politically influenced, etc.

I think it was a mistake.

Not sure how difficult it would be now to abolish that, but would imagine it would be very difficult. But I would like to see the effort made.

The man was 79 and still working in a stressful environment, he had reached his alloted term, what part of that is difficult to accept.

As you get older things happen to you and there is a cumulative effect so you feel great one day and crap the next. He might of been one of those who had no use for doctors, besides lots of older people die in winter. His death is inconvenient but unlikely to be anything but natural

For my part, I liked Scalia. You knew where he stood. You could predict his jurisprudence because he was usually consistent, and I usually agreed with him.

Likewise Justice Thomas, I respect Thomas' jurisprudence.

The Supreme Court I respect the least is John Roberts, because he has no discernibly consistent principles.

I don't AGREE with Ruth Bader Ginsburg on much, but her form of justice is predictable, and based on a discernible set of principles from which she does not depart.

Roberts is unprincipled, capricious and really quite disgraceful.

Won't happen. Obama may get a recess appointment.

Now Hillary will be the Dem nominee.

The Democrats will get serious because they can control the Supremes. Bernie Sanders starts to lose now.

And the fix will be: no indictment for Hillary, and a Supreme Court seat for Obama.

To avoid that, the Republicans have to win. The only one they can win with is Trump.

So, Democrats will now coalesce around Clinton. Republicans will either coalesce around Trump (because Independents will vote for Trump but they won't vote for the others), or Hillary will be President, and Obama will be on a Democrat-controlled Supreme Court.
