Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said today he is suspending his 2016 campaign for president.

"It's been an incredible honor to run a principled campaign for the White House," Paul said in a statement. "Today, I will end where I began, ready and willing to fight for the cause of liberty.

Paul finished fifth in Monday's Iowa caucuses with 4.5 percent of the vote, behind rivals Ted Cruz, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Ben Carson.

Paul campaigned on defending liberty and shrinking the federal government’s influence in the United States and abroad. Paul was seen as a possible mainstream libertarian alternative to his father, the former Texas congressman and presidential candidate Ron Paul.

Since announcing his candidacy on April 7, 2015, in Louisville, Kentucky, Paul was unsuccessful in breaking single digits in national polls.

The man who was dubbed “The Most Interesting Man in Politics” by Time magazine in 2014 wasn’t able to capture the electorate’s attention, even in states like New Hampshire where his libertarian positions have broader appeal.

Paul, 53, was one of the earliest and strongest voices against GOP front-runner Trump on or off the debate stage, calling the billionaire real estate mogul from New York everything from a “fake conservative” to a “delusional narcissist.” He even compared Trump to “Gollum,” the antagonist in “The Lord of the Rings.”

Paul’s campaign focused on gaining grassroots momentum among younger, first-time voters and college students.

Back home in Kentucky, Paul will be gearing up for a re-election campaign where he will be facing off against the Democratic mayor of Lexington, Jim Gray.

Wonder who will be next ?

The highpoint was when McCain called Rand Paul and Ted Cruz "Wacko Birds". It was a huge career boost for both of them.

I thought he might stay in for NH but obviously he realized he was going to be disappointed there too.

2016 just is not a good year for the Paul brand, even the toned-down version that Rand has rolled out. He also seems, despite huge efforts, not to be able to gain a lot of support from his minority outreach efforts.

His opponents won't be surprised. I noticed how deferential both Cruz and Rubio were to Rand in the Iowa debate, trying to butter up his supporters, like they both knew he was folding tents for the 2016 nomination if he didn't do shockingly well in Iowa.

Maybe Rand should get a store bought haircut.

That's exactly why he went nowhere - if he had kept his dad's pro-liberty, anti-interventionism platform he would have made more of an impact.

Paul 2.0 was too busy trying to fit in with good old boy's club.

As a result, he abandoned the base that was rabidly supportive of Ron and went down in flames.

He largely did.

He did have to compete with Sanders for some of the college crowd's votes.

He also had Cruz, a real constitutionalist, and a senator who went for Non-Interventionism Lite. Cruz was better prepared and funded throughout.

I can see that you want to take credit for defeating Paul because you think he's a heretic but I think it's mostly just your vanity speaking.

Santorum has suspended his campaign too.

That's 3 candidates knocked out by Iowa.

Bush was reduced to begging an audience to clap for him today. He's about done.     : )

NYT:

Speaking to a crowd at the Hanover Inn near the Vermont border during his final stop of the day, Mr. Bush finished a fiery riff about protecting the country as commander in chief – “I won’t be out here blowharding, talking a big game without backing it up,” he said – and was met with total silence.

“Please clap,” he said, sounded defeated.

Santorum himself tweeted just before 4pm that he will go on Fox News tonight to make "two major announcements".

Looking forward to joining @greta tonight on @FoxNews to make two major announcements! Tune in at 7pm ET https://t.co/b5wZZe57On

— Rick Santorum (@RickSantorum) February 3, 2016

The first is expected to be the official word that he is dropping out of the race. And the second is likely to be an endorsement, perhaps of Donald Trump. After finishing the so-called "kids table" debate last Thursday, Santorum and Huckabee both attended a Trump rally in Iowa. Trump held the rally that night in lieu of attending the main stage Republican debate, which he decided to skip due to his ongoing fight with Fox News and moderator Megyn Kelly.

Anchor baby Santorum is about to endorse Donald Hillary Trump.

Hillary must have promised Santorum amnesty when she becomes prez.

Still an arrogant asshole, aren't you? Where have I ever "claimed victory" for Paul's defeat.

The lesser Paul was NOTHING like his dad.

Tough shit if you can't admit that.

And you're still pouting, even after Rand dropped out. "If Rand would have pandered to us, we would have made him a winner blah-blah-blah...".

Sucks to be you. It has to. And I do mean that.
