I am not retired nor do I plan to be retired for years to come. I am gainfully employed and have private insurance covering my family through my employer. I am not eligible for Medicare.

Yet, I receive all kinds of emails, direct mailings and other advertising about Medicare all the tyme. What is Medicare? Is it another socialistic attempt to destroy my life-style?

I am not retired nor do I plan to be retired for years to come. I am gainfully employed and have private insurance covering my family through my employer. I am not eligible for Medicare.

You are automatically eligible for Medicare when you reach your full retirement age (maybe earlier) whether you are otherwise insured or not. Medicare A is free. You will have to pay for B,C and D but you do not have to take either of them and just take A (which is free) - so might as well enroll in at least A. As long as you are employed your employer provided insurance will be primary and any Medicare part will be secondary. If you can continue your employer provided insurance into your retirement all Medicare parts will be primary and your employer provided insurance will be secondary. If you do not enroll in B et. al at the time of employment you can only enroll during the annual designated period and will have to pay a higher premium for B et.al. which increase each year you delay enrollment.

I know this because I have yet to retire but enrolled in Part A when I was first eligible and deferred action on B et.al. My employer provided insurance is still primary and Medicare A secondary. In fact when I retire I will keep my employer provided insurance and enroll in at least Part B. Medicare does not pay 100% of its eligible expenses but my employer provided insurance will pay Medicare eligible expenses what Medicare does not, including presecription drugs. My calculations show that the additional premium for B will be more than justified to have it and still continue to pay the premium on my employer provided insurance at retirement.

On balance Medicare is generally a positive benefit, especially to those over 65, and especially to those that do not have or cannot continue with employer insurance into retirement, not an attempt to destroy your life. This is generally true even if you are self-employed and have private insurance.

I hope this helps.

Yes, so-so, very helpful; thanks for chiming in.

Good health is a blessing for those of us that have it. And we want to die in our sleep if we can.
