The plan is to send 4 people on a one-way trip to mars in 2025 using the technology of today. There were 200,000 volunteers initially, and this has now been narrowed down to 100 finalists who are competing for the 4 spots.
Supposedly they will be firing off transport rockets a few years ahead of that time to land habitats for the settlers to set up once they land.
This be some weird shit. Evidently they do not want couples because the stated plan is to forbid the settlers from having sex (yeah, good luck with that one!)until it's time for the first scheduled baby to be born in 2056. Now,I am no math expert, but since the youngest people I see on this show seem to be maybe 22-24 and some are obviously in their late 30's,the math just doesn't want to get up and dance for me,not matter what kind of tune I try to play for it.
The ones on this show range from a lesbian couple to a married couple,to single people, but the mates of the people in marriages or relationships are NOT going,so those couples are in pre-breakup,I guess. On top of that the people seem to have nothing in common. At least one is a Muslim,at least one is a Hindu, one is from South Africa and seems to be in her late 30's and have a couple of mixed race kids that I guess she is going to leave behind for what appears to be the commune she lives in to raise.
Did the people behind this brain fart never hear of the expression "things in common"? Never mind the physical illnesses, suppose one of them goes nuts and decides to murder the other 3? What do they do if they stop him or her,put them to death? I don't see these touchy-feely airheads having the stones to do that,so I guess they would just make them live alone in their own canal.
Maybe I am a pessimist, but I see no way in hell for a Martian colony composed of only 4 people to survive until 2056,never mind refuse to have sex with each other for 3 decades. What if someone develops diabetes? Gets a kidney stone? What are the others supposed to do,commit mercy killings? There are all sorts of things that can go wrong and leave one person sitting on a planet all by himself or herself with absolutely nothing to do but stare out into space while waiting to die.
The concept is pretty interesting, and could even have a chance of surviving if they were to try to land 100-200 people along with frozen embryos so they would have a variety of abilities as well as a "reserve" of humans to continue on if a few die for one reason or another. What kind of freaking idiot would try to start life on a new planet with a gene pool about as deep as a dew drop?
The Dutch company behind this says they are going to do it with a budget of 6 billion bucks, and that they will even make a profit from it by selling advertising time to corporations when they air the events.I'm guessing they are going to make a cubic ton of profit, and the good news for them is they ain't going to have to share it with the cast.
I'm sure there are those of you a lot wiser than I am about what it would take to put this sort of thing together and make ir workable and successful, and if you do,please speak up and tell me where I went wrong because I sure as hell don't see any chance at all of this working.
