I've never had it done before.
My dentist said that I have a cavity in my back
left lower molar - (Approximately the size of
Lake Superior). So she sent me to this endodontics
place. The appointment is today.

After the root canal, the dentist will 'install' a crown
on the molar.

Yesterday I bought Glucerna vanilla shakes for
nutrition in case I can't chew anything.
This is going to be 'fun', right? Ugg.

You'll be totally numb from about four Novocaine shots. NOT the procedure it was years ago, Chuck.

Hopefully your dentist is competent. Make sure he gives you an antibiotic. You'll be ok :-)

If they give you nice painkillers it is fun

Be a man and tell the dentist you don't want Novocaine.

Before you have a root canoal think about this.

Do you really want to leave something dead in your body? What they do is kill the tooth, and leave it. Just have it pulled.

Think I'm kidding? Ask the dentist if the tooth is alive or dead after the root canal.

Was 2 novocaine shots, not 4. How many units?
I didn't ask. And those shots were by far the
most painful part of the process - so far.
They gave me a script for percoset - so maybe it
will start to hurt when the novocaine wears off.

But the gob of goop they put in the hole in the tooth
as a temporary filling was pretty big - so the
original hole must have been pretty big, because
they really didn't do much grinding and
ultrasounding - just a little bit.

Gonna go back to the dentist and have a crown put on
the tooth.

Many people tend to whine and complain about root canal,
but so far it has been no big deal at all.
But I'll back to y'all when the novocaine wears off.

No more novocaine - no longer numb.
And just a mild toothache.
This is okay!

And Bob, regarding the 'dead thing' -
quite frankly I think the nerve/tooth was already dead.
On the X-ray the nerve was already exposed -
the Doc showed it to me. So shouldn't I have been in
agonizing pain? I was, and am, not.

Hmmmm. Then you won't be needing that Percocet after all. Let me give you an address to send it to.

Hey -- so two shots instead of four? Nice. Half the expected...fun...er, I mean pain. Grip the handles of the chair, a couple of pinches. Meh. Over and done with.

The percs. Yeah, they'll help. Your jaw will probably be achy. Use only if needed. Save for future hurts.

Many people tend to whine and complain about root canal, but so far it has been no big deal at all.

Yeah. "Root Canal" used to be an ordeal a looong time ago. The rep still scares the crap out of people. If your dentist is as competent as I suggested, he properly sterilized the hole in the tissue. Ought to address your prob. But yeah, he still has to replace the temp crown with the permanent. THAT will take some expertise. Some people believe Root Canals and crowns present a possible toxicity SNAFU and suggest a bridge instead.

Glad you endured, Chuck. Hang in for PT 2.

Ha! I already filled the prescription.
It says 'No Refills'.
But hey - maybe I might break a leg or something...

(Percocet is half Tylenol anyway - so who really cares?)

Yeah, I've been reading all of the different materials
that these things can be made of. So which is most healthy?
And what will my insurance cover? Eh? Ugg...
(For the crown, I mean.)

These days, getting the deadening shot is virtually painless. The needles are much thinner than they used to be. The only problem might be if there is inflammation and infection in the surrounding tissue when the procedure is started. The anesthetic doesn't work so well in those cases. It's mostly just boring.

The procedure (root canal) was yesterday morning.
I had a minor toothache early this morning.
But now it's gone.
Thank goodness for current dental technology, eh?

I had one over 15 years ago; the biggest pain was to my wallet - $735 out of pocket...ouch! I timed the job and it was about 45 minutes in the chair IIRC.

That made me decide to get dental insurance as I was self-employed at the time.

My minor toothache is now gone. (From the root canal.)
Hopefully the crown will be as much of a breeze!

'Get it (the crown) done as soon as possible!' They said.)

'We've got to get the report from the root canal
procedure before we can schedule your crown procedure.
Will take 3 or 4 days, maybe a week.'
The dentist then said.

So I'm waiting.
