asset forfeiture

This cheerfully drawn comic from the Daily Signal does an excellent job highlighting the insanity of civil asset forfeiture. It begins with a quintessentially American premise: a young person setting out on his own, all wordly possessions in hand, to start a new life as an adult. Far be it from me to spoil the rest:

Arresting your property

If such stories seem unbelievable (it is a cartoon after all), be sure and check out the recent all-too-real stories of Joseph Rivers and Charles Clarke, for whom this cartoon surely hits too close to home. Even they are only the tip of the iceberg.

New Mexico has taken the initiative to end this inherently abusive practice once and for all, and there are active reform efforts underway in California, Michigan, Montana, Oklahoma, Maryland, and others. But until every other state and the federal government join in, these incredible tales of legalized theft and policing for profit will continue.

FreedomWorks recently released a handy map accompanying their report on state forfeiture laws. How does your state stack up? (2 images)

It is shocking that anyone can be so stupid to drive around with a huge amount of cash in their vehicle.

You should NEVER drive around with a lot of case. Definitely don’t try to leave the country with a lot of cash. Leaving the country with more than $10,000 requires making a report with the federal government.

If you want to move a lot of wealth around, there are some great options. If you want to move $25,000, all you need to do is to buy five 1918 Ottoman Gold Coins and stick them in your briefcase. That surely is a lot less conspicuous that carrying around “bricks” of cash.

If you want to, for example, move around $500 thousand dollars….then purchase a single five cent buffalo nickel in excellent condition and stick it in your pocket. No one will ever notice.

Civil asset forfeiture is only a problem for idiots. If not through collectible coins, then cold storage and paper wallets, millions of dollars worth of digital currency can be held in a simple, random string of characters.

There are many simple tools and technology to protect your freedom and make sure that you never become another statistic….a statistic without money.

A problem only becomes a problem when someone chooses to make it a problem.

Just shut up already!

Carrying cash is NOT a crime!

Civil asset forfeiture is only a problem for idiots.

No asswipe - civil asset forfeiture is a problem for ALL Americans.

There are many simple tools and technology to protect your freedom...

That ranks right up there with "Freedom is Slavery" as one of the most anti-freedom sayings of all time.

You would have made a great Nazi.

It's useful idiots like you who are enabling a coming cashless society.

Bet you can't wait to take the Mark of the Beast.

Carrying cash is NOT a crime!

And NEITHER is civil forfeiture.

Civil forfeiture has a long history dating back hundred of years to roots in British maritime law to the British Navigation Acts.

The modern day law became more stringent with the passage of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984 which permitted local and federal law enforcement agencies to divvy up the seized assets and cash.

Just shut up already!

Nah, just wise up already….and avoid any chance of losing your money.

There….that sounds better.

I gave terrific advice, you can ask for no more than that.

You would have made a great Nazi.
