WASHINGTON — Donald Trump’s dream of the White House is built on the belief that America will turn to a can-do outsider, particularly a successful business tycoon, to fix the mess that is Washington.

It’s likely just a dream.

Voters enjoy candidates full of outrage and without ties to the byzantine, polarized, money-saturated ways of the nation’s capital. Audiences flock to hear and cheer them in New Hampshire, Iowa and elsewhere. And then they usually vote for a more statesmanlike, experienced choice.

Trump, 69, the brash New York City-based billionaire businessman and television show host, plans a “major announcement” Tuesday on his presidential intentions. He’s flirted with running before, but this time he appears to be taking the steps needed to formally enter the Republican race.

He’d start as a clear underdog and wouldn’t even be the favorite among outsider candidates. Former neurosurgeon Ben Carson’s supporters have spent the last year raising money and building an organization, and former business executive Carly Fiorina has drawn friendly audiences in key primary and caucus states.

Trump, like Carson and Fiorina, faces another challenge: No political experience.

The last president who had never run for public office was Dwight Eisenhower. While never before elected , he WAS supreme commander of the Allied forces in Europe during World War II.

Trump is a joke candidate. He is running for president as if it is a reality TV show. A lot of the candidates in the GOP seem to be in it just to raise their awareness for future work.

“Trump finished in the top 10 of a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday, which could have implications for GOP debates should he decide to run. Fox News, host of the first debate on Aug. 6, has announced it would cap participation based on finishing in the top 10 of polls leading up to the debate.

“The Quinnipiac poll also found that 21% of Republican voters said they would definitely not support Trump, the highest number for any of the announced and prospective GOP candidates.”

Trump is a Schwarzenegger RINO. He openly supports and has been the beneficiary of crony corporatism. He even favored the 'Kelo' decision about using eminient domain to support private development .

Kelo would've helped him in the 90's when he tried to force an elderly woman named Vera Coking from, her home so he could add limo parking for one of his casinos. When she turned down a $1 million offer ;he tried to strong arm her and forcibly evict her with the help of the New Jersey Casino Reinvestment Authority. She filed a suit and a judge ruled her home was not 'public space'. Had this decision been post-Kelo Trump may have won.

Maybe Trump did win.

Coking sold her property for $530,000 in an auction on July 31, 2014. The reserve price was $199,000, a tenth of the offer Trump had made for the property eight years earlier. The owners of Trump Plaza expressed no interest in the auction. The adjacent Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, the property for which Trump wanted Coking's property to begin with, closed on September 16, 2014 due to lack of business.

I'll bet whoever bought the property for $530,000 wish they had known Trump was going to close the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino.

I'll also venture a bet that Coking now wishes she had taken Trump's offer.

Trump is a joke candidate.

You recall his last foray into presidential politics. He gassed up the Trump copter, flew up to NH, got out and greeted about 50 reporters waiting to jump him with questions, got back in his Trumpcopter and flew back to NYC and wasn't heard from again.

Trump has been a registered Republican for less time than Obama has been prez. While he claims he voted for McStain in 2008, he was still a lifelong registered Dem voter (and donor) until some time in 2009.

In the 80s Trump was at the top of his game - he fixed that ice skating rink in record time after it spent years unrepaired - got a lot of good will out of that - then he kind of became a caricature.

I'd still give top honors to Bush Senior who went to Tokyo to try to get them to allow imports of Buicks (which had been newly rebuilt to allow for right-hand drivers). At a state dinner, he threw up his suchi into the lap of the Japanese prime minister. The Japanese faint over such unhygienic incidents.

The Buick deal went through without any further hitches.

3 bankruptcies and the casinos he built in Atlantic City went broke and closed (I think he had sold off his interest in them by 2014).

So much of Trump's fame and fortune relies on making headlines and being a big name, nothing more. And his show, running for 14 years now, is just a big self-promotion, to build his name brand since the salary is so small it can't mean anything to Trump. It's the free PR and brand-building Trump is after with that show and perhaps with his regular threats to run for prez ever since the late Eighties.

Isn't this the fourth or fifth time that The Donald has threatened to run for prez? I suppose he's fully qualified now, having finally become a registered Republican (instead of a lifelong Dem voter and donor) six years ago.

Trump's polling is just awful, the worst of all GOP candidates.

Over 20% of Republicans said they would never vote for him. His unfavorability rating is over 60%. The list of sour stats on Trump is endless.

I don't see where you get enough indy or Dem votes for Trump to overcome this huge deficit in the GOP.

Keep in mind, even Trump's TV show plays well only in Blue states. Like Christie, he is from a deep Blue state and is primarily popular for his brashness and that is largely centered in Blue east coast states.

We can also recycle some old Trump 2012 graphics. Here's one of a half-dozen Trump White House makeovers.

That is the line! A GOP candidate using that kind of langauge should be a disqualifier for the same Oval Office Reagan was in.

I have to ask, will the Chinese respond back to "President Trump" who are you calling a mother fucker? I would not like to see what a billion insulted Chinamen do in response to an insult like that.

He recently called all the other candidates "assholes". He had already formed an exploratory committee, showing that his discussion of running this time had grown beyond talk. In the run-up to the announcement, Trump has spoken in his trademark blunt, direct tone about President Barack Obama, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidates, particularly Mario Rubio and Jeb Bush, saying each had made an a------ out of themselves.

He should have run third-party or indy. He would have had much more reach.

Jumping into a very crowded GOP field makes him look like he's just angling to play kingmaker later, maybe dropping out even before the Iowa caucus. Lots of pundits think that's his plan. An ego like The Donald's won't tolerate a 1%-2% showing in IA or NH too well.

He might just be in this to play attack dog on Jeb and Hitlery. Trump is a devious fellow.

He played that role in 2012 IIRC. Didn't he 'entertain' Romney at his Trump Towers and a few others and then give a presser about every detail discussed?

Trump did not own it. He bailed out of it years ago. Trump received 5% stock in exchange for the use of his name and likeness.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_Entertainment_Resorts

2009 bankruptcy and restructuring

The casino group filed for bankruptcy for the third time in February 2009 owing $1.2 billion. Two sets of debt holders eventually proposed reorganization plans for the group in U.S. bankruptcy court.

Trump initially made an agreement with banker/high-stakes poker player Andrew Beal, owner of Beal Bank, which held $500 million in the group's debt, to take over the resorts. However, citing concerns about the bank's experience with gaming, he dropped them in favor of the hedge fund Avenue Capital Management, a plan favored by other bond-holders. Beal then partnered with investor, Carl Icahn, who had worked on restructuring another Atlantic City casino, the Tropicana. In court, Trump argued that he would fight the Icahn/Beal team if they sought to use his name and likeness on the group's properties. Instead he signed an agreement with Avenue Capital in which he would receive 5% stock in the reorganized company and another 5% in exchange for the use of his name and likeness in perpetuity.

It's not great, but it isn't the worst. The worst is when people have to ask "Who?"

I doubt he will hang around past the date when he would have to file his fiancials. I doubt he could get the GOP nomination if he does hang around.

None of the prospects has emerged as particularly inspiring. I don't see how the GOP plans to successfully market another Bush for the White House. "He's not Hillary" is not a campaign slogan, especially if Hillary is not the opponent.

I'm still doubtful that Hillary can stumble all the way to the nomination. Bill is a great politician. Hillary is awful.

On the Dem side, Bernie Sanders is polling 11.6 which is higher than any of the Republicans. If Hillary implodes, Sanders with Elizabeth Warren could be a formidable ticket in debates.

It will be interesting to see how it shapes up.

Or would be in his expertise was in saving companies instead of bankrupting them after stealing all their money and leaving the investors who actually put their own money into the operation to pay off the bills.

3 bankruptcies and the casinos he built in Atlantic City went broke and closed (I think he had sold off his interest in them by 2014).

More than that. The luxury gated condo community on a beach in Mexico also went into bankruptcy after a bunch of people paid substantial downpayments. Very few condos were even built, and the people who paid to have them built can never live in them because Mexico is retaining title. They don't let foreigners own land.

Polls show Trump is the most hated candidate in the last 35 years. His negatives are durable and longstanding. That is something you can't fix overnight. And he tends to make bombastic speeches, like today: "I will be the greatest jobs president God ever created" or "I'm very rich", etc.

Did he bail out,or was that some sort of plea agreement to get him out of there while they still had some money

Donald Trump and the Trump Organization, LLC were not in danger.

The Trump Organization, LLC is the principal holding company for the Trumps. It is not the company at issue regarding the hotel/casino chapter 11.

Regarding the hotel/casino 2010 Chapter 11 restructuring of debt, Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. (“TER”) is a publicly held company whose predecessor entity was Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, Inc. (“THCR”). TER took over from THCR in 2005 after a chapter 11 restructuring. Donald Trump resigned from the TER Board of Directors in February 2009 and abandoned his limited partnership interest. The Trump Marina was sold to Landry's Restaurants. Carl Ichan held the mortgage on the Trump casinos. In 2014, Trump asked that his name be removed as he neither owns nor controls TER.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Trump_Organization

The Trump Organization is a limited liability company conglomerate based in Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York. Donald John Trump Sr. worked for his father's firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son, while attending the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and in 1968 officially joined the company. He was given control of the company in 1971 and renamed it The Trump Organization. The organization is a global leader in real estate development, sales and marketing, and property management. The company owns, operates, invests, and develops residential real estate, hotels, resorts, residential towers, and golf courses in different countries, as well as owning several pieces of high-end real estate in New York City. The organization also has a stake in Trump Entertainment Resorts, which owns and operates the Trump Taj Mahal, the Trump Plaza, and the Trump Marina casinos in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Together with NBC, the Trump Organization additionally owns the Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, and Miss Universe franchises.

The company serves as the principal holding company for Trump's business ventures and investments. With investments within the United States, Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world, The Trump Organization is primarily involved in real estate, construction, hospitality, and entertainment but has maintained a presence in a wide variety of industries including book and magazine publishing, media, model management, retail, financial services, board game development and video game publishing, food and beverages, business education, online travel, airlines, and beauty pageants.

In addition to real estate, other business operations within the company include restaurants, a modeling agency and beauty pageants; public skating rink management; and a television production company that produces television programs which include the reality television hit, The Apprentice. Furthermore, the company engages in retailing providing high quality fashion apparel, home furnishings, jewelry and accessories, books, chocolate bars, furniture, lighting products, bath textiles and accessories, bedding and home fragrance products, small leather goods, crystal stemware, barware and gifts, and bottled spring water.

The organization is owned and managed by the Trump family with Donald Trump as its CEO and three of his eldest children —Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump— serving as Executive Vice Presidents (EVP) within the organization.

In February 2013, the company agreed to sell the Trump Plaza for $20 million to the Meruelo Group, a California-based company whose holdings include the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno. The proceeds would be used to pay down the company's debt to a level of $270 million. CEO Robert Griffin said TER would consider also selling the Trump Taj Mahal for the right price. However, in 2013, Carl Ichan, who held the mortgage on the Trump Casinos, would reject the sale of the Trump Plaza.

In early August 2014 Donald Trump filed a lawsuit requesting his name be removed from the Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino and the Taj Mahal facilities since he no longer runs or controls Trump Entertainment Resorts.

2014 bankruptcy

Trump Entertainment Resorts filed again for bankruptcy in September 2014, a fourth time.

He inheirited something like 12 million bucks from his grandfather's will when he turned 21,as well as all the contacts in the NY area real estate business and the real estate his grandfather owned.

It's a bit difficult to estimate the worth he came into as he was given control (as distinct from sole ownership) of the family business. Trump's father was rich. One might say Trump started on third base and hit a home run.

Business career

Trump began his career at his father's real estate company, Elizabeth Trump and Son, which focused on middle-class rental housing in Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. One of Trump's first projects, while he was still in college, was the revitalization of the foreclosed Swifton Village apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio, which his father had purchased for $5.7 million in 1962. Trump became intimately involved in the project and with a $500,000 investment, turned the 1200-unit complex with a 66 percent vacancy rate to 100 percent occupancy within two years. In 1972 the Trump Organization sold Swifton Village for $6.75 million.

In 1971, Trump moved to Manhattan and became involved in larger building projects and utilized attractive architectural design to win public recognition. He made plans to acquire and develop the old Penn Central for $60 million with no money down. Later, with the help of a 40-year tax abatement from the New York City government, he turned the bankrupt Commodore Hotel into the Grand Hyatt and created The Trump Organization.

Don't even know why he is wasting his own money to run. He even lost his reality TV fan boys/gals when he bungled that whole Obolo birth certificate presser. He got as far as the 'best' birther and that is not saying much:)

He's Perot with better rhetoric and schtick. He will be a problem for the other candidates on the debate stage because he has mastered the simple, blunt, straight-talking demagoguery .

I don't think he has the patience to run a long campaign going state to state ,setting up an on the ground organization . This is all ego and I don't think he wants it badly enough to put in the effort . Further ,I suspect he cares less about adherence to constitutional principles than the emperor . It suprises me how some conservatives have taken to him. He conducts his business like a typical rent-seeker .

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

Also with an outrageous comb over:)

"Obama did not wear a tie in office."

Unlike Reagan, a man who respected the Presidency and wore a coat and tie while in the Oval Office, Obama has no such respect.

The language of some private citizen who wasn't even a candidate is irrelevant.

So if the rank and file hold this view (a perfectly correct view to hold) why happy about a person like Trump sitting the the Oval Office?

Nobody hates a self made rich person more than a socialist and occupy liberal.

"why happy about a person like Trump sitting the the Oval Office?"

Because he'd be better than Hillary. Me happy about that.

(Assuming he wins the Republican primary.)

He will be a problem for the other candidates on the debate stage because he has mastered the simple, blunt, straight-talking demagoguery .

Plus he really doesn't care what he says because he knows he's not going to get elected, and probably doesn't even want to be elected because he would have to disclose too much of his financial doings and would be able to make any deals while in the WH.

IMHO he is just having fun while feeding his ego and improving the value of his trade name.

Why is democracy held in such high esteem when it’s the enemy of the minority and makes all rights relative to the dictates of the majority? (Ron Paul,2012)
