Jeb Bush confronted by college student: 'Your brother created ISIS'

May 14th 2015 10:34AM

A college student confronted likely Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush over his brother's on Wednesday night in a heated moment at a town hall event in Nevada.

"Your brother created ISIS," Ivy Ziedrich, a 19-year-old college student and self-proclaimed Democrat said to the former governor of Florida at the town hall event attended by roughly 250 people in Reno, according to The Washington Post.

Ziedrich made the uncomfortably accusatory line while questioning Bush about his thoughts on the rise of ISIS, which Bush has previously blamed at least in part on President Barack Obama.

"We respectfully disagree, we have a disagreement," Bush said

Real Clear Politics transcribed the heated moment:

JEB BUSH: All right. Is that a question?

IVY ZIEDRICH: You don't need to be pedantic to me, sir.

BUSH: Pedantic? Wow.

IVY ZIEDRICH: Just answer my question. Why are you saying that ISIS was created by us not having a presence in the Middle East, when it's [caused by] pointless wars where we send young American men to die for the idea of American exceptionalism? Why are you spouting nationalist rhetoric to get us involved in more wars?

JEB BUSH: We respectfully disagree. We have a disagreement. When we left Iraq, security had been arranged, Al Qaeda had been taken out. There was a fragile system that could have been brought up to eliminate the sectarian violence...

And we had an agreement that the president could have signed that would have kept 10,000 troops, less than we have in Korea, could have created the stability that would have allowed for Iraq to progress. The result was the opposite occurred. Immediately, that void was filled. Look, you can rewrite history all you want. But the simple fact is that we are in a much more unstable place because American pulled back.

With those final words, Bush turned away, ending their argument.

"Bush has a problem...probably many."

Three come to mind -- immigration, common core, and his last name. He can change the first two, but not the last. And that will sink him with the average (ignorant) voter.

If this "college" girl gets it wrong, Mr. John Q. Public won't have a clue.

I dunno, he's already succeeded in a sneaky name change.

His real name is John Edward Bush. I doubt one voter in a thousand knows it.

That's a good thing, because it's not true. The middle name is not Edward.

His name is John Ellis Bush.

Much like Al Qaeda, the Islamic State (ISIS) is made-in-the-USA, an instrument of terror designed to divide and conquer the oil-rich Middle East and to counter Iran’s growing influence in the region.

The fact that the United States has a long and torrid history of backing terrorist groups will surprise only those who watch the news and ignore history.

Well, this brouhaha is because Megan Kelly asked him if he would invade Iraq as president, given what we know now. From the way he answered the question, it was obvious that he was saying that, in 2003, he would have invaded, given the intel assessments of CIA and our other spook agencies along with the spooks of our major NATO allies. He has since said he wouldn't invade, given what we know now.

I think he was so fired up and practiced on answering the question of whether he would have invaded in 2003 like his brother did that he just answered that question, forgetting or not hearing the phrase "given what we know now".

If you watch the interview, it's easy to grasp. Plenty of reasons to reject Bush without making too much of one botched interview.

Yeah, TOS is still nuts over the WMD-wuz-real bit. You'll notice that the TOS posters that hang out here under a different handle all seem to have that same idea. It's a tell.

In this instance the college student was essentually correct. Violent jihad has been the successful islamic intent for 1400 years. Bush didn't create it. But in toppling Saddam Husein, dumbass Bush toppled one of two main people in the Mid East who were holding the fort against Islamic jihad. After Dumbass Bush declared MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, armed Jihadists were free to migrate into Iraq under a new name and the rest is history. In defense of his brother and the putrid Bush name, Jeb flew into a huff as a desperate deflecting response. But the college student had Jeb pinned to the wall in this instance.

What about your buddy Joe Biden? Is he off the hook for believing Saddam had WMD?

After hearing the testimony from Hamza and Butler, Sen. Joseph Biden, (D-Del.), head of the Foreign Relations panel, commented that "one thing is clear: These weapons must be dislodged from Saddam, or Saddam must be dislodged from power."

And American mis-rule of Iraq has caused more death and destruction than Saddam's rule.

And Milosevic was called a monster only because the USA calls anyone it fights 'a next Hitler". But he was not - it was NATO that was Nazi-ish.

I know because the Americans did not kill them. I was there and knew of all the strikes. The specific area I referred to had no coalition bombing targets. No USFORs there until two weeks after Baghdad fell.

And American mis-rule of Iraq has caused more death and destruction than Saddam's rule.

You should really learn to govern your passions...they will be your undoing.

Your assertions read like bad bumper stickers.

Not to mention your deflection of the original topic...You asserted you took sides with Milosevic and Saddam. I stated you sided with genocidal maniacs. Both are clearly documented.

You could have said that you opposed the removing of both Saddam and Milosevic as this caused regional instability and further chaos. If you stated that I would have left you alone because there is ample data to support that view.

But no, you sided with genocidal maniacs as being RIGHTFUL in their rule. That is just bunk and hopefully you know that.

Frankly it is bunk to argue things in retrospect. Never liked doing the 'what if's' in history. I'll leave that to the alternate history fiction writers.

I see we have to deal with another of the 'big lies ' (like the US created al- qaeda ) . The fact is that the Awakening and the surge defeated AQ Iraq .General Kean spoke of intercepts where the demoralized leaders wrote letters to AQ in Pakistan in late 2008 that said, “Don’t send any more brothers. This war is over. We have lost.”....“And they said it multiple times in different phrases over 3 or 4 message intercepts that we had, Keene continued. “They had admitted that defeat. They were done.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qUj6FdNMtU#t=87 (key section at 1:30 )

As you know AQ Iraq was the precursor to the Islamic State. Why did they make a rebound ? Part of it was the political leadership in the Baghdad government . But the biggest reason is because the emperor could not or would not secure a SOFA agreement that would've left enough coalition forces to help secure the country . So if anything ;it is the emperor who set the stage for the Islamic State .

No, but the CIA and al_Qaeda seem to be on the same side in a lot of wars (Bosnia, Kosovo, Libya, Syria, etc). And the USA did create al-Qaeda - the principles of al-Qaeda broke away and went rogue.

And the USA did create al-Qaeda - the principles of al-Qaeda broke away and went rogue.

Numerous CIA officials have gone on record to deny U.S. financing or arming of bin Laden.

“It never happened,” said Milton Bearden, the CIA station chief in Pakistan from 1986 to 1989, where he was responsible for the agency’s covert program in support of the Afghan resistance.

“The whole thing about us recruiting and training and paying and arming Arabs is one of those hardy perennials people love to make,” Bearden told us in a phone interview. “It’s a story too delicious to actually check. … It’s an urban myth.”

Bearden said he has often challenged those who make claims like Paul’s to produce “one single Arab that you believe was recruited, trained or otherwise supported by the U.S. government.”

“No one’s coughed up a single guy in 20 years,” Bearden said.

Early in the Afghan war against the Soviets, before he took over the post, Bearden said some officials in the CIA floated the notion of recruiting Arab legions who had come to Afghanistan. But the CIA quickly concluded it was a “really bad idea,” he said.

In an article written for Foreign Affairs after the 9/11 attacks, but before the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan, Bearden wrote:

Bearden: The idea that the Afghans somehow needed fighters from outside their culture was deeply flawed and ignored basic historical and cultural facts. The Arabs who did travel to Afghanistan from Peshawar were generally considered nuisances by mujahideen commanders, some of whom viewed them as only slightly less bothersome than the Soviets.

The so-called Afghan Arabs included some well-intentioned people, Bearden told us, but also a lot of “whack jobs,” including “an awful lot of derelicts emptied out of Saudi Arabian prisons. … It became sort of a Club Med Jihad.”

“For the most part, they were a joke, these guys,” Bearden said.

The CIA decided supporting the Arab fighters “would get out of hand,” he said. “There was no serious discussion of arming these Arab legions.”

There were “very few” Arabs who actually saw any combat in Afghanistan, Bearden said, although bin Laden got into a couple “dustups.” But that doesn’t mean their influence was not felt. Arab fundraisers were bringing in nearly $25 million a month at one point in the war, largely used for humanitarian and construction projects, Bearden said. And one of the most prominent fundraisers was bin Laden, although Bearden said that at the time bin Laden was largely unknown to U.S. intelligence.

The U.S. covertly funded the Afghan fighters through Pakistan. So how does Bearden know the Pakistanis didn’t simply give some of the money to the Arabs, including bin Laden?

“They didn’t,” Bearden said. “We had ways to check where the money was going.”

Besides, he said, the Arabs were “awash with money from the Gulf.” In other words, they didn’t need it. Bearden said the CIA made efforts to keep its support for Afghan forces “very discreet from everything else.”

“There was a policy not to do that [support the Arab fighters],” Bearden said. “The question is, ‘Did the CIA secretly support the radical Islamic Arabs in Afghanistan?’ The answer is absolutely not.”
