Ithaca, N.Y. — A deputy in the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office has been charged with assault and robbery.

Jeremy Vann was arrested by state police on Monday after an incident in Enfield that involved a 22- year-old female, according to police.

WHCU, citing Sheriff Ken Lansing, reported that Vann was suspended Monday night with pay pending an investigation.

Here are the felony charges against Vann, according to a state police news release:

— Robbery in the Third Degree

— Tampering with Physical Evidence

— Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree

And his misdemeanor charges:

— Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree

— Criminal Obstruction of Breathing or Blood Circulation

— Unlawful Imprisonment in the Second Degree

— Assault in the Third Degree

Vann was arraigned in the Town of Enfield Court and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail/$50,000 bond. Vann was ordered to reappear in the Town of Enfield Court at 12:00pm on Friday, April 3, 2015.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.

Here is a story you don't need to spin, slant or cast in a yellow article. When I see LE bad deeds, I'll post them.

Sounds like a complicated case but I assume they've got this guy seven ways from Sunday.

It'll be interesting to see if it gets plead down to misdemanors or if he gets jail time and fired. Also, the civil lawsuit case against the police agency that will follow (though we can assume that it will be confidential).

Allowing these cases to be settled and the result be considered sealed is a major problem across the country. The amount of any settlement should be public information.

If they do offer a plea deal of just misdemeanors, it's not unusual for first time offenders in Central NY, whether you are an officer or not.

In this case, I'll tell you how it most likely will end up. They will try and get a plea to ONE FELONY and dismiss the others... with no jail time, just probation. A Felony conviction will keep him from qualifying as a certified police officer, anywhere in the state of NY.

Last officer that I knew that took a felony plea, took a job with an ambulance service.

If they don't report the outcome, I'll find out. I don't know the officer personally, but know officers that have worked with him.

My expectation too.

That probably won't stop him from hiring on in other states. You already know my usual remarks about how bad cops move from PD to PD, dirtying them up as they go and leaving taxpayers to pay off settlements. I think this is much more common than anyone realizes.

Kinda like catholic priests. I agree, once arrested FOR ANY level offense, they should be banned from LE employment.

Maybe suspended pending the outcome of a trial. Even bad cops (and priests) should get their day in court and a presumption of innocence. The public has a right to be protected until the matter is resolved in a court.
