With the U.S. F-35 Grounded, Putin’s New Jet Beats Us Hands-Down

By Rob Garver, The Fiscal Times

March 24, 2015

With the U.S. F-35 Joint Strike Fighter still in limbo over reliability problems, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s administration on Monday said it would begin regular production of its newest fighter jet, the T-50, next year.

According to state-run media, the Russian military will begin mass-producing the advanced fighter jet in several versions, and will also begin making models that will be available for export.

“We have plans to deliver the first series of fifth-generation fighter jets next year,” said Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov, after visiting a plant owned by Sukhoi, the Russian defense contractor responsible for the new plane, which is also known as the PAK-FA.

The “fifth generation” of fighter jets to which Borisov refers is a category of the very newest military aircraft in the world. To date, the only true fifth generation fighter in operation is the U.S. F-22, a wildly expensive and not terribly reliable plane that Congress agreed to stop funding in 2009. The last F-22 was built in 2011, giving the U.S. Air Force an inventory of 187.

One of the reasons Congress and the Pentagon agreed to eliminate the F-22 was that the F-35 was in the pipeline. The joint strike fighter was supposed to be cheaper to produce and operationally superior to the F-22. To date, it has been neither.

The F-35 has consumed some $400 billion in resources, about $170 billion more than was originally projected, and the prototypes that have been produced have failed to meet the necessary performance standards. A scathing report from the Department of Defense’s Director of Operational Test and Evaluation cited a laundry list of flaws and shortcomings, from vulnerability to engine fires to computer malfunctions.

Experts estimate that the F-35 remains years away from deployment in a combat situation, despite assurances to the contrary from the Pentagon.

At the moment, that isn’t a major security issue. The F-22, for all its problems, is currently without real competition in the battle for the skies. However, if the Russian T-50 is true to its specification, that could change in the not-too-distant future.

They've only built 3. India got a chance to preview it a few years back and came away unimpressed.

The key problem here is that China is producing their own 5th-gen fighter. Russia and China would be far better off to work together on development cost and differentiate their models by avionics and weaponry.

I'd rather have 187 pricey, slightly slower, lower-ranged F-22s than 3 of these superior T-50s.

You have to ask who the customers of the export versions will be. India and a few others will be interested but it seems unlikely the wealthy Mideastern states will buy or Japan or China or EU/NATO (except to buy a couple just to steal design ideas). How many can Russia sell to the remaining countries, many of whom are neutral or too poor to pay for top jets?

Overpriced and beset with problems, the F-35 still looks like a better bet as an air platform in coming decades. And the backing of the U.S. military means the F-35 will have top support and upgrades and all that comes with that committed commercial relationship with the Pentagon.

I view the F-35 as a boondogle no one wants to admit to. It is basically a jobs program - a mae work program - but unliek fast speed rail and bridges to nowhere - it is the kind of socialist spending Republicans love (and Democrats love it as well - by the always love govt spending).

Unlike Russia, we can easily afford to ground the new F-35 because we already have the 187 advanced fighters already on active status.

Russia has always had problems with very advanced computerized flight systems and integrating the myriad of advanced technology that a modern fighter requires. America's defense contractors are pricey but do much better at accomplishing their objectives. This applies as much or more to doing upgrades to a design throughout its operational life.

Ask yourself this when comparing the two air forces: would Russia rather have what America has or would America rather have what Russia has?

Both now and into the 2020s, Russia will be at a very distinct disadvantage in any confrontation with the West or with just America. This is why they are concentrating so much on rebuilding their Pacific fleet and on new advanced cruise missiles to enhance their nuclear threat as our deterrence fades and EU-NATO commits slow-motion suicide of their NATO forces.

I see it as more of something used to bind our alliances closer, with work being spread around to our allies. I'd rather we pull free of all these foreign liabilities, and let us build weapons for our own needs. The F-35 was handicapped by the VTOL requirements of the Marines. For what they actually do, a turboprop version of the tried and true Douglas Skyraider would have been superior, at far less cost.

Or bilk them more with a useless weapon - a bridge to nowhere with wings.

" It is basically a jobs program... "

It is also a great kick back / bribe vehicle.
