A hallmark of American life - griping about work - has landed a Florida man in a Middle Eastern jail.

Ryan Pate, a helicopter mechanic from Belleair Bluffs, Florida, took to Facebook after a dispute over sick leave with the company he was working for in the United Arab Emirates.

He was home in Florida at the time, but when he returned to Abu Dhabi last month, he was told to report to the police station, where he was arrested for breaking an Emirates law on slandering his employer.

He spent about 10 days in jail, he said, and is now free on bail awaiting a March 17 trial. His supporters say he faces up to five years in prison and a steep fine if convicted.

'I just couldn't register it in my head because as an American growing up in the United States, the First Amendment right is just ingrained in my brain,' he said in a phone interview Wednesday. 'I never even entertained the fact that I would wind up in prison out here for something I put on Facebook in the United States.'

Pate, 30, said the incident stemmed from a trip to Florida in December. During his return he spent the holidays with family and proposed to his girlfriend, Jillian Cardoza, but also was trying to get treatment for a back injury.

There was disagreement with his bosses about extending his leave to see a doctor, he said, and after a particularly unsatisfactory phone call with them, he took to a Facebook.

He says he can't remember precisely what he wrote, but knows he called his bosses 'backstabbers' and warned other contractors not to work for them. He didn't give the rant much thought until he was back in the Persian Gulf, where he planned to handle paperwork to end his employment as well as empty his apartment and sell his car.

Soon after, he says he received a call from police telling him to come to the station, where officers showed him screen shots of his comments.

'I'm being arrested. I'm so sorry. I love you,' Cardoza said he texted her from the station.

Pate's congressman, Rep. David Jolly, intervened on his constituent's behalf, lobbying the State Department and Emirates officials for help.

In a letter to the Emirati attorney general, Jolly emphasized respect for the sovereignty of the country, but argued because the posts occurred while Pate was on American soil, those laws shouldn't apply.

'It is deeply troubling that Mr. Pate now faces judicial proceedings over an action that was done legally in his home country,' the Republican said.

The Emirati Embassy in Washington said it did not have much information about the case and couldn't comment. An after-hours email to the company, Global Aerospace Logistics, did not get an immediate reply.

Pate said he's trying not to think too much about the sentence he could face. He says he's remorseful for letting his emotions get the best of him.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Pate.

And I had no idea that UAE jurisdiction extended to US citizens' actions in the US.

Live and learn, I guess.

Why didn't he quit before he departed for leave?

It does if they say it does.

The local .gov is just playing handmaiden for the interests of the company in making it clear they will take action against employees who badmouth the company or make it harder for them to hire.

I wouldn't be surprised if the charges get dropped as this case is likely to be counterproductive for the complaining company. They give credence to his accusations by pursuing this and it is guaranteed to spread the story more widely with prospective employees more hesitant to sign up.

I'll bet he's been asking himself that question ever since he was arrested.

My guess is he had no idea an American in America criticizing anything about the UAE could be charged with anything.

It was sure news to me.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Pate.

I notice only 123 people have donated over 15 days, raising (supposedly) $16,000.

And this story has received some prominent coverage on Fox News several times.

It seems people are lacking in sympathy for this guy.

Recall the black guy who raked in $300K from the same treatment on FNC because he had to walk miles to work. He ended up shopping for a new car and a house apparently. So I saw FNC started a new fundraiser today for some guy that walks 5 hours to work each day, both ways. He'll probably become a millionaire or something.

They covered it on the morning show at least once (I am not a faithful watcher by any means, at best it runs in the background). And I flipped past FNC today and Shep Smith did a segment.

That's because you don't live in a FREE COUNTRY... I don't feel bad for you. Either follow your countries laws OR LEAVE IT... but if you plan on fleeing to my great country... DO IT LEGALLY.

Deckard, next time you fear monger "police state" misinfo... print this article. lol

I for one.

Not every country is equal... not every country is as great as this one. It's not my job (or our countries job) to fight for the rights of other countries citizens... something our politicians need to learn.

I think we should urge them toward human rights and democracy as part of peace-and-prosperity doctrine and classical liberalism.

But if you choose to go live in Islamic hellholes, don't be so surprised when they apply their laws to you. Any more than you should complain that you got caned on the bare buttocks to within an inch of your life for any drug use (and other offenses) in Singapore (and Malaysia and Brunei, among other hellholes).

UAE is quite well-known for these prosecutions. Kissing under the mistletoe, holding hands, flipping someone off, public drunkenness, posting comments on YouTube, these are all well-known to draw sentences in prison and fines. Let alone drunken sex on a public beach where they really throw the book at tourists.

The better question is how could this guy not know that UAE is exactly the kind of country that would pull something like this?

Some people wander the world and think they can just pull out their "I'm an American get-out-of-jail-free card". Well, foreign governments are not so impressed. And the current administration is not a group you should count on to pull your chestnuts out of the fire. As we learned at Benghazi, to name just one failure.
